Community Tasting Notes (average 88.3 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 76 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by guzmana on 1/11/2017 & rated 89 points: There is a nose and taste of berries and spice. It is a light Zinfandel with good acidity that goes well with food. Perhaps a bit underwhelming for a Zin but with decent balance. (2135 views)
Tasted by csillabu on 4/30/2016 & rated 90 points: A fantastic Zin for the price. Drinking very well now. Food friendly and easily complements many dishes. Smooth from beginning to end with medium bright tannins at the finish. (2661 views)
Tasted by jayrod on 9/5/2015 & rated 90 points: Lovely wine, super smooth integrated tannins with wonderful black berry and slight pepper accents. Wouldn't wait too much longer to drink, it is wonderful now.

Went great with mushroom ravioli and tomato sauce. (2983 views)
Tasted by Tpairing on 2/1/2015 & rated 89 points: Fruit comes through with plum, berries a bit of spice in pepper. Fruitier and lighter to standard Zins but delicious and top notch with Caribbean spicy grilled short ribs. (3276 views)
Tasted by tombiro on 10/3/2014 & rated 84 points: Decent fruit. Not my favorite Zinfandel. (3583 views)
Tasted by jbehrendt on 9/14/2014 & rated 88 points: A nice wine with grilled cheese sandwiches with ham. Not an elegant wine; but very drinkable at a great price. A bit fruity, but not too much. (2280 views)
Tasted by snarfglk on 8/26/2014 & rated 89 points: Low alcohol by today's standards (13.5%), but any enjoyable zin. Soft and supple, so it is different from many in-ur-face high alcohol fruit bombs. (1950 views)
Tasted by kenhud on 6/7/2014 & rated 80 points: Not a typical California zin. Not bad, not good, just there. Not why I buy a zin (1871 views)
Tasted by jayrod on 4/19/2014 flawed bottle: This bottle showed very poorly, had to be an off. (1641 views)
Tasted by snarfglk on 3/29/2014 & rated 89 points: Lots of fruit and some oak, but not over the top. Just good. (1404 views)
Tasted by graemeg on 3/24/2014: {cork, 13.5} Plenty of liquorice and jammy blueberries, but overlaid with a distinct rubbery (pirelli?, bridgestone?) quality which never really went away. Not too sweet on the palate, it's medium/full-bodied, a little hollow beyond the mid-palate, and finishes rather short. Less impressive than last September's bottle; but then it's sealed with a cork, so consistency is pretty unlikely... (1505 views)
Tasted by RonnoWino on 3/16/2014 & rated 89 points: This is a very good zin!excellent for casual drinking or with a light meal. Would recommend. (1488 views)
Tasted by BarAddison on 3/9/2014 & rated 90 points: Jammy. Dry. Love this zin! (1261 views)
Tasted by Kesslerc14 on 2/7/2014 & rated 89 points: Strong ripe berries. Classic DCV terroir with dusty raspberry throughout. (1256 views)
Tasted by pmccullough17 on 1/30/2014 & rated 89 points: PMcCullough: nice everyday drinker. Hints of tobacco and ripe berry. (1477 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 11/5/2013 & rated 88 points: Medium-dark red-violet color. Spicy oak leads in the nose, pushed by moderate blackberry and raspberry fruit. On arrival, medium tannin and medium-low acidity. Develops forward fruit in the mouth, not overripe, not goop-y, just fully ripe. Oak spice and a slight bitterness on the finish (seeds and pips over-processed ?) compete for attention. Drank well for an uncomplicated meal of homemade pizza with sausage and olives and a tray of mixed pickled peppers. It's a zin aimed right down the stylistic middle between easy drinking and big. Bottle #3 of four. (1897 views)
Tasted by Allenmo on 10/28/2013 & rated 92 points: The wine looks Purple colored. The legs are Slow. It smells like Black Pepper, Cherry, Blackberry, and Raspberry. It tastes like Black Pepper, Cinnamon, and Nutmeg. The body is Medium/Full. The wine has Smooth texture. The wine finishes Long. (1717 views)
Tasted by oenophilemoose on 10/10/2013 & rated 86 points: Decanted for two hours, found a light bodied, pleasant wine featuring raspberry and cherry flavors accompanied by a modest finish. Mouth feel presented no edges, nor were any significant tannins or oak present. A good QPR and should be pleasing to most at casual gatherings where wine is not the focus. (1881 views)
Tasted by csillabu on 9/27/2013 & rated 92 points: Great QNP. Ready to drink, smooth, balanced from start to finish. Will purchase again. (1526 views)
Tasted by graemeg on 9/15/2013: {cork, 13.5%} All youthful liquorice and sarsparilla on the nose. Jammy. The palate is medium-bodied, largely tannin-free, with minimal oak, some acid, and loads of ripe, jubey blackcurrent and sweet liquorice fruit. It's warm without seeming too alcoholic, and coats the front half of the tongue with flavour; the back palate isn't much troubled. It's a little too polished to be called rustic, but that's its underlying personality. Given the fairly serious structural deficiencies, it's not a wine I'd age for long, but it's decent, flavourful drinking now. (1682 views)
Tasted by cmcclane on 8/27/2013 & rated 89 points: Took a couple hours to soften up but once it did it was really nice. Dark fruit w some spice. Drank with grilled sausage. I wish I bought a few more for now and the cellar. (1720 views)
Tasted by Oakjeff on 8/6/2013 & rated 82 points: Reticent nose. Extremely dry with very dusty and drying tannins. Lack of depth and fruit. May pair well with very well done red meat. (1489 views)
Tasted by mhauser on 7/31/2013: Very much a Dry Creek zin the first night, taking on a Pinot-like delicacy the second. A terrific wine for the money. (1500 views)
Tasted by Polindz on 7/23/2013 & rated 90 points: KSL liked it. Medium-bodied, smooth finish. Good with food or stand-alone. (1423 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 7/14/2013 & rated 90 points: This is all about raspberry. Dark raspberry in color; double line of short legs-a first! Big ripe raspberry nose, pure beam of fruit. Raspberry fruit with some nice spice/herb notes. Nice, complex finish. 4-12-16-8: 90/100. (1428 views)

Dry Creek Vineyard

Producer website

Our 200 acres of estate owned vineyards are the foundation for our winery. Fundamentally, the family understands that great wines begin in the vineyard. This philosophy is an ideal marriage for winemaker Bill Knuttel, as he spends most of his time in the vineyard. Each harvest Bill can be found walking vineyards, row by row, to ensure that the grapes are ripening perfectly. Bill’s meticulous approach to vineyard management allows him to use the highest quality grapes for our wines. After all, a wine can only be as good as the fruit in the vineyard. If the fruit is bad there’s a pretty good chance the wine won’t be very good either. Utilizing careful viticultural practices and maintaining long term relationships with growers all contribute to producing our world-class wines.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
