Community Tasting Notes (average 93.9 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 392 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by UTPK on 3/29/2024: Last bottle out of 4. 1998 is a softer vintage and this one is now fully mature. The nose is typical KRUG and bursts of toasted brioche and rye bread. Better acidity than I remembered from the last bottle it is a joy to drink at the moment. (405 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/1/2024 & rated 94 points: Some Wine Tasted at the Acker La Paulée Auction (Maybourne Hotel - Beverly Hills CA): Tasted at auction. Magnum. Lots of fresh and mature apple with excellent volume and length. Even better than another magnum from a few nights ago. (799 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/28/2024 & rated 93 points: Acker "Paulee" Burgundy Dinner (Capital Seafood - Beverly Hills CA): Paulee style dinner. Magnum. Very rich, slightly more bready than I recall from previous bottles, but with the underlying structure to keep everything in harmony. Very complex with very good depth. (716 views)
Tasted by essenceofreal on 12/31/2023 flawed bottle: Slightly off.

My last bottle, sigh. Didn't have that typical lip smacking acidity. Bit tired and dull finish. Initial Krug characteristic eeked out slightly and then petered out. meh. wah!!!! (986 views)
Tasted by jhngo on 12/30/2023 & rated 96 points: really good for an 98. Fresh baked brioche toasty. (848 views)
Tasted by frenchiecagowine on 12/25/2023 & rated 94 points: From memory. Full on brioche, almond, apples, with oxydative notes. Powerful and very present. Lacks a bit of acidity. (440 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/21/2023: Holiday Champagne Gala (Wilmette Harbor Club): Walkaround gala tasting. Wonderful richness, but this is starting to show its age. (386 views)
Tasted by Mag357 on 11/25/2023: JK Birthday. Very fine bubbles, on the sweet and rich side with copious amount of dosage, then very good depth and intensity of flavors, mixing lemon oil, nuts and notes of butter, yeats with some chalkyness, quite complex, a fine champagne at maturity, in the rich style. (1016 views)
Tasted by Alex Barbera on 11/19/2023 & rated 93 points: Schon sehr reif (846 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 11/18/2023 & rated 93 points: Magnum. Great weight and lovely hue of lifted acidity. 93-94 (920 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 11/18/2023 & rated 93 points: Krug tasting (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): Glass: Riedel Superleggero Champagne
Clear, medium golden color. Fine nose, a bit muted, smoky, some mushrooms.
On the palate fine sweetness, very elegant and fine, high ripe acidity, beautiful harmony. Lacks a bit tension and pressure to be really great, but that is a first world problem. 93 (770 views)
Tasted by RobinTeo on 11/3/2023 & rated 95 points: Pardon the brevity, I don't drink enough champagne!

Single blind but bottles pulled at random.

Thought this was drinking really well - oolong tea, almonds, caramel dominate for me with great depth and precision. (170 views)
Tasted by palfr2 on 11/3/2023: Liz's B-Day Dinner at Singapore Swimming Club - Krug Vintage Vertical (Singapore Swimming Club): Krug Vintage vertical spanning Collection 1988/1996/1998/2000/2002/2003/2004/2006. Blind tasting. This was thought to be on a par with the 1996 so tied for 2nd wine on the night. palate depth ran second only to the Collection 1988. May be the surprise of the night. As one highly experienced fellow participants the wines showing better ended up being exactly the older ones pre 2000. Probably the one I would seek out considering quality/price (895 views)
Tasted by tcarter on 10/29/2023 & rated 96 points: Ojai Food + Wine Festival; 10/26/2023-10/29/2023 (Ojai Valley Inn): Starting to feel a little age for the first time in Krug vintages (ie, none of the 2000s+ seem to have much of any age right now (late 2023) but the '98 is starting to show it with honeycomb and caramel peaking through. Start great wine. Still had plenty of bubbles and felt much more likely than the '96. (798 views)
Tasted by sativa on 9/27/2023 & rated 95 points: this arnt my notes, but they fit the bill so close i am resuing them. Drinking great and will only get better i believe

"On the palate, the Krug style seems obvious to me: creamy mouthfeel, fine integrated woodiness, diffuse oxidative notes, everything blends into a rich and coherent whole. The juice is solar, the wine is demonstrative and clearly at its peak. The aromas of praline and mushrooms are powerful, on a bed of black fruits. It is complex and broad, with a very fine bubble. Intense finish, almost tannic over a long length." (842 views)
Tasted by Benoit Hardy on 6/30/2023 & rated 94 points: Toasted and powerful nose. Notes of Mirabelle plums and hazelnuts.

First glass drunk blind. 1st time I recognize both the producer and the year! It must be said that this champagne particularly reflects this strange year 1998, scorching in August and humid in September that few houses dared to vintage.

Excellent champagne, you have to like the “virile” and solar aspects however. (1434 views)
Tasted by Eric on 4/15/2023: ESTG does Champagne (West Seattle, WA, USA): Mmmm, so yeasty, delicious, prototypical Krug. (2346 views)
(2332 views)
Tasted by jono9999 on 1/1/2023 & rated 82 points: Disappointing. Sweet and cidery. (2246 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 11/23/2022 & rated 94 points: Krug Lunch (7x GC, 7x Vintage, 3x CdM, 1x CdA): Seven vintages of Krug from 1988 to 2008. Consensus winner was the 1996 (98pts) with an unmatched layerdness and elegance. The 2002 (97pts) has equal features but doesn‘t have that extra 6 years of maturity. The 2004 (96pts) outperformed expectations, round and harmonious, beautiful first window of maturity. The 1998 was better from magnum (94pts) than 75cl (92pts) but is a leaner vintage. The 1995 (94pts) is fully mature and beautifully expressive. The two disappointments were a very lean 2008 (92pts) and a very elegant 1988 Collection (88pts) which, unfortunately, had too much sherry notes.

TN: Magnum vs normal bottle of the 1998. The magnum showed expressive from the start to finish, fresh, round with lots of tertiary coffee, caramel, brioche and nutty aromas along with a citrus spine and good freshness. The 75cl showed more evolved, with less tension and energy with aked apple, but also fresh citrus, wet rocks, but not with the complexity or weight of the magnum. Still very solid. (3460 views)

Tasted by hajoha on 11/21/2022 & rated 96 points: Krug 1998.
95-96p (2009 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 11/18/2022 & rated 92 points: Krug Tasting (Memories Bad Ragaz): Krug tasting hosted by a merchant and collector. Main takeaways: 1/ Clos du Mesnil and the 1996 back vintage were show-stoppers, 2/ 164 was in a different league of the Grande Cuvée line-up, 3/ a general feature and maybe signature for Krug for me was the fine integration of autolytic notes into a balance of fruit and mineral notes. The textures tend to be soft with just a splash of cream and structures built around acidity. 4/ Clos du Mesnil towers over the vintage and GCs in terms of precision, complexity and elegance.

Tasting note:
From normal bottle, late release. Cépages 35% PN, 45% Ch, 19% PM. 10 years on lees, degorged Q4 2009. Slightly milky with fine ox notes, a bit Sherry-like here and there but also with nutty complexity and hints of caramel which became more dominant with aeration. Nicely aged, a bit weak mid-palate (consistent with the Magnum) and a less exiting, mostly citric finish. Notably more advanced than the magnum. (1957 views)

Tasting note:
From Magnum, late release. Cépages 35% PN, 45% Ch, 19% PM. 13 years on lees, degorged Q1 2012. Fascinating, intoxicating aromatic intensity with a cold butter, pear, apple and candid stone fruit, a bit of marzipan and grassy herbal freshness. However, the mid-palate was lacking structure unfortunately and mostly built around the acidity which was a downer after the highly promising nose. In comparison to the regular bottle, this was notably younger and fresher. (1772 views)
Tasted by S1 on 11/3/2022: Charleston Offlineorama VII; 11/2/2022-11/6/2022 (Various locations): Rich, with a layer of acidity. Lots of minerality. Needs some time I think. (1470 views)

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
