Community Tasting Notes (average 92.9 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 34 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 11/23/2021 & rated 95 points: Notes from memory but another perfect example. Youthful, lush, bright, clean, spicy. Detailed and nuanced but endowed and powerful. Perfumed. Elegant and delicate at the edges notwithstanding the intense red and black cherry fruit. A spectacular wine, but couldn't concentrate on notes... (1712 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 4/26/2021 & rated 95 points: This was added as the last wine of the night, even after a blind ’91 Meo Camuzet and after ’91 Leroy Richebourg and Musigny, so it was very sadly a little overlooked and under-appreciated, notwithstanding it being a sensational masterpiece unto itself. Brilliant spice over lush red and black cherry fruit. This is less intense and spicy than the Riche but a little more flamboyant and showy, though not to the same perfumed degree as the Musigny. Darker, more concentrated, and less of that ethereal spice and soft red cherry that the Jayer had earlier in the night, stylistically towards the other end of the spectrum. [1538/3508] (1803 views)
Tasted by bill00 on 12/22/2020 & rated 94 points: Nice aromatics of dark fruit and spice with an easy-going palate. Drinking really well in what feels like an optimal spot of maturity. (1692 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 11/21/2020 & rated 80 points: Musty and indifferent. (377/3508) (1978 views)
Tasted by WIBA on 11/21/2020 & rated 86 points: Fresh nose but very thin on the palate and not much depth/complexity to is. It's either over the hill or just not my style of Leroy. (1661 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/7/2020 & rated 92 points: La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. Very charming red cherry and berry with baking spice. Close to fully mature with lots of complex notes. Still so enticing, but I enjoyed this more when last tasted a decade ago. (2098 views)
Tasted by KenK on 3/7/2020 & rated 93 points: An excellent bottle at likely peak. Showing lovely red strawberry fruit, baking spice galore and near perfect balance. Classic Leroy that comes across almost at GC level. Lots going on and one to contemplate vs the quick taste from this bottle I brought to La Paulee. (1357 views)
Tasted by PGIF on 5/15/2019 & rated 96 points: From my personal cellar, bought on release and forgotten until a shelf collapsed and I found the case in the rubble. An astonishing wine, bright ruby, no bricking at age 27. Fresh nose on cork-pull (no decant), notes of black cherry and cola. No vegetal aromas or brett. Long mid-palate blast of fruit, 10 second finish. Just a natural phenomenon. No sign of fatigue after 2 hours, and then the bottle was empty. I’m guessing another 10 years in this place. (1184 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 2/3/2019 & rated 95 points: Sommelier Appreciation Dinner 2019 (The Brown Residence): Medium expressive complex nose displaying ripe red fruit with a hint of black, caramel, a hint of cedar, Vosne spice, cinnamon, anise and earth. Fully integrated palate, finely layered deeply toned slight dry ripe red fruit, silk, bright acidity and mineral, and a medium to long finish with a hint of anise and Vosne spice at the end. It was first served too cold and with air, it becomes significantly more expressive. (2100 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 2/3/2019: 2nd Annual Sommelier Appreciation Dinner (Undisclosed Location): Tough to get a read on this one unfortunately. Felt very dry and austere. Meant to come back to it after some airing out but never got there. (3847 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 4/13/2018 & rated 95 points: A lost Friday afternoon gathering – Mostly Burgundy (Blacksalt, Washington DC): This particular bottle shows a noticeable stem note, perhaps some unripe fruit? Expressive nose displaying rich black fruit, a hint of caramel, Asian spices, Vosne spice, a hint of sous bois and stem. Excellent concentration, nicely layered intense sweet black fruit, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long decadent black fruit driven finish with a hint of sous bois and Vosne spice at the end. This is an incredibly youthful example that is drinking beautifully but can improve for another decade or two. Excellent showing. (2365 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 3/8/2018 & rated 91 points: this was my bottle and didn't live up to expectations. the 91 Brulees next to it was certainly better and fresher. The bottle seemed to be in good shape, 2cm, no seepage, solid garnet color with bricking at the edge and a touch cloudy. Enjoyable but little spice, a bit lean and some developed aromatics/flavors. (1772 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 2/9/2018 & rated 94 points: Beautifully fresh and expressive nose, bright red cherry fruit. Quite surprised by how youthful and vibrant this is. On the palate this is rich and has darker berry berry flavours with some rustic earth influence. Very juicy, but also detailed and layered. Bottle no. 01737 goes down with intensity and elegance. Impressed. (1893 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 10/17/2017 & rated 92 points: Sweet marionberry and dark red fruit. And just the faintest hint of spice. Despite the quality of the fruit this lacked the complexity to be of great interest. 92-93 (1699 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 12/4/2016 & rated 95 points: A small Burgundy gathering - 08 Coche CC, 90 La Tache, 78 DRC GE, 90 Rousseau & 91 Leroy Beaux Monts (The Grill Room at Rosewood DC): Pop and pour. Seasoned stems with a half ounce to an ounce. The nose is very Leroy, concentrated decadent red and black fruit, caramel, cedar, a strong note of Vosne spice and a hint of sous bois. Excellent concentration, nicely layered fruit, decadent black fruit and exotic spice driven palate impression, nice balance and a long Vosne spice and cedar driven finish. This is a really youthful showing, somewhat similar to the 90 version but a bit more structured and not as exotic. It clear shows the Leroy’s hedonistic magic! (3027 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 4/3/2015: Not sure what was up with the nose on this wine. Funky nose, but still spice and red fruit on the palate. (3414 views)
Tasted by Edclr on 1/28/2015 & rated 96 points: Getting better with time. Cant believe this isn't a Grand Cru, at least in her hands. It killed an 85 Clos De Tart. What a finish, took almost no time to open, and was still great 2 hours later. (3149 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 11/14/2013 & rated 94 points: Floral, stems, chocolate. Some tannins poking through. Nice! (4055 views)
Tasted by Matt Neel on 7/29/2013: Dinner at l'Artusi 7/29/2013 (l'Artusi, NYC): Deep blood, opaque, and just barely a touch of bricking. The nose is huge! Like the underside of a saddle. Very masculine and virile, with leather, mint, black plums, milk chocolate, and a cool menthol note. The palate was, at first, very rustic, tannic, and not unlike the old Chiantis that preceded this wine. Later, with more air, it rounded out, revealing velvet and fine fruit; black raspberry and lovely sweetness. Still youthful, with fine length. Delicious, but I wouldn't call it a great wine, necessarily. No hurry -- this will keep for many, many more moons. (4381 views)
Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 7/29/2013 & rated 95 points: Deep, dark and silent with violets and other flowers - very floral. Dark and sweet with hoisin, spice, blue-red fruits, meat. Not an explosive nose, but intensely perfumed and enveloping. Elegant and powerful on the palate, almost salty. Pure and translucent with a huge spice (five spice and such), sweet, and violet component. Has some sort of essence - fruity and meaty or something - a sappy cherry-blood alloy that it utterly transfixing. Still quite young - showing significant structure and tannins. This wasn't as rock-star as my first bottles (probably 18.5/20) but better than my last which showed some green aspects (15-16/20). An excellent showing. I couldn't shake this wine - I kept tasting this in my head the next day. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5/20. (4564 views)
Tasted by Edclr on 3/31/2013 & rated 94 points: Couldn't have picked a better time to drink it. Beautiful wine, still holding up very well too. WOTN (2816 views)
Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 11/29/2011 & rated 91 points: Red Burgundy Tasting: Overachiving 1er Crus VS. Underachiving Grand Crus (La Silhouette): Tasted blind. Spicy nose with good strawberry fruit. Great nose: forward and complex. A touch of green. Delicious on the palate which shows spice, strawberry at first, then herbal on finish. The middle is creamy and delicious. This was my bottle, and it did not show as well as it usually does. This was the last of 6 purchased years ago at auction from Acker. The previous 5 bottles showed consistently in the 17-18 (out of 20) pt range. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15.5/20. (4548 views)
Tasted by psmith on 10/22/2011: Acker Auction Chicago (Sixteen Restaurant): Gorgeous dark strawberry fruits and spice. Balances power and grace, with structue framing the elements nicely. Great clarity. Excellent. (3974 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/22/2011 & rated 93 points: Acker Merrall Inaugural Chicago Auction (Trump International Hotel): Perfumed aromatics, with red and black fruit also on the nose with really sensational, classic Asian spice. Palate had that same combination of fruit flavors, but also a real emerging sense of secondary development that became more prominent with more air, so my only complaint is that this wine is starting to show its age. (3992 views)
Tasted by KenK on 10/22/2011 & rated 94 points: Classic Leroy and drinking wonderfully. Perfumed floral notes dominated by red fruits and some underbrus notes.
Soft rich red fruits of strawberry and cherry with pretty spice and violets. Smooth and succulent style with nice crisp edge. Nicely layered finish really lingers. In a great place tonight. (3745 views)

Domaine Leroy

Producer website

Domaine Leroy is a negociant/wine producer based in the Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy. It makes a range of wines from Pinot Noir that comes from some of the most iconic vineyards in the world, including Le Chambertin, Musigny, Clos de Vougeot and Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and is second only to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in terms of price and quality. Those wines made from estate grown fruit are sold under the Domaine Leroy label.

The domaine was founded by Francois Leroy, a wine merchant based in Auxey-Duresses, in 1868. It was expanded under his son Joseph and grandson Henri throughout the early 1900s, and in 1942, Henri Leroy was involved with the purchase of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti alongside Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. Leroy and Villaine saw massive potential in the plots and vines DRC already held and, rather than see the domaine split up among various proprietors, decided to buy it together.

In 1974, Henri's daughter Lalou Leroy took over this co-management of DRC alongside Aubert de Villaine; she had also inherited Maison Leroy from her father after his death in 1980. Leroy left Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1991 following a dispute with Villaine, and began to focus on her own domaine.

Domaine Leroy was expanded in 1988 with the purchase of estates in Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin, and with 21 hectares (52 acres) of vineyards, became a domaine. These holdings include plots in several grand cru sites in the Côte de Nuit, as well as in Corton, plots in eight premier cru vineyards, and vineyards that fall under both village and regional appellations. While most of Domaine Leroy's wines are red, there are a few white wines made from Chardonnay and Aligoté as well.

Lalou Bize-Leroy also owns and directs Domaine d'Auvenay.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Les Beaux Monts

Beaux Monts covers a little over 11 hectares and is further subdivided into Beaux Monts, Les Hautes Beaux Monts, Les Beaux Monts Hauts, and Les Beaux Monts Bas. It borders the grand cru vineyard of Echézeaux, though at a higher altitude. Quality is variable with some wines described as "weedy" and they are typically less dense than wines from lower altitudes. Better examples may have a high-toned perfume. Top producers for Beaux Monts include Domaine Bertagna, Bruno Clavelier, Leroy, Hudelot-Noëllats, Louis Jadot, and Henri Jayer.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Vosne Romanée is one of the smallest wine villages in Burgundy The wines possess diverse characteristics, but they can generally considered to have complexity and longevity beyond nearly all other wines in the world. The village has six grand crus: Romanée-Conti, La Romanée, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and La Grande Rue. While there is monopoly control of four of the six grand crus, the village has at least forty growers sharing its vineyards. The top premier cru includes Les Malconsorts, Cros Parantoux, Les Chaumes, and Clos des Réas.
