Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 541 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Vas19 on 4/20/2024 & rated 91 points: Definitely showing aged notes, tomato and leather. Resolved tannins, pretty elegant on the palate. Solid aged chateauneuf, I think time to drink. (441 views)
Tasted by VAGenius on 4/13/2024 & rated 95 points: 60 minute decant. Boozy nose shows dark cherry, brandy, kirsch, and rum cask. Comes off drier on the palate with raspberry preserves, cherry pit, and earthy red fruits along with dried bay leaf and tarragon. Resolved tannins lead into leather, cherry, smoked ham, and dusty acidity and attic notes that grab your throat on the way down. Perhaps the best aged CdP we've had as we usually like them within 10 years. (610 views)
Tasted by europat55 on 3/30/2024 & rated 88 points: This seemed tired and not a good representation of what mature Pegau should taste like... (944 views)
Tasted by Amberissey on 2/27/2024 & rated 94 points: 26 February 2024 - Sun dried tomatoes, stewed Provence herbs, slow cooked red meat, and roasted beetroot on the nose. The nose is so rich. It has a sweetness on the palette, but not really fruit sweetness, more sweetness that you get from slow cooked lamb and again sun dried tomatoes. Again great richness. Plummy, damson fruit. Great length. (1663 views)
Tasted by paintinginacave on 2/26/2024 & rated 88 points: Stood up two weeks in advance. Four hour slow oxidation. A deep ruby core fading to a pale ruby outer edge. Slightly closed aromas of damp herbs, bitter cacao nibs, black cherry, and freshly turned earth that failed to intensify despite sufficient time. The palate was all about braised beef and roasted vine tomatoes. Despite respectable levels of concentration and impressive balance this still underwhelmed. A very good wine nevertheless. (1452 views)
Tasted by JCGuthrie on 2/25/2024: I double decanted this at home for sediment and then gave it an hour or so of air in the bottle. Same bottle as rocknroller, and similar reaction in terms of this bottle not being quite on form. Good depth, with game and red pepper notes complementing the usual funky Pegau fruit, but also some scorched earth and iron notes that were less welcome. (1425 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 2/25/2024: Monthly Tasting Group: All the Rhones (A - Side Public House, St. Paul, MN): Small pour. This didn't hit me the way it usually does for some reason. VA, harsh, dried cherry, dried garrigue, saddle leather, spice, harsher finish. May have gotten better, but I didn't have enough to see. 90ish? (1555 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 2/24/2024 & rated 92 points: Wine group NR & SR dinner at A-Side Public House in St Paul MN. James's btl I found this enjoyable & my kinda of CDP. In it drinking window and yet many years of more exploration lies ahead. Couple guys thought it might be showing some VA. I didn't notice that. 92/93 (1448 views)
Tasted by David Meddings on 2/11/2024 & rated 93 points: Decanted 2 hours. Suspended sediment, garnet with some tawny character. Lifted bouquet showing black cherry and plum notes. Palate is round and expansive. Tannins well integrated now. Sweet dark fruit compote profile that is balanced with acidity and a sandalwood spice character adding complexity on the long final.

Very smooth, polished CdP. Excellent really - not at all bombastic. Drinking very well now although I don't see much further upside in cellaring these longer. (1375 views)
Tasted by Eric on 2/10/2024: ESTG does Pegau-Palooza (Seattle, WA, USA): Mmm, deep, dusky, soy, so pure, meaty, dark, black fruit, leather. Having consumed 22 bottles of this wine, I have been a little disappointed as compared to my early expectations. That said, this bottle was utterly glorious. In fact, with a healthy 4oz pour on day 2 this has only started to unfold and get much more interesting. The structure is more prevalent, the spice more intense, the fruit more red, more spicy and more vibrant. Impressive. (1910 views)
Tasted by Cholera on 12/28/2023 & rated 94 points: Similar to my last rating. Last bottle didn't disappoint. Decanted for an hour before dinner. Paired with Mussel bouillabaisse and duck. Graphite and dusty with hints of olive and herb with more mineral finish. Round full bodied but not intense and fruit forward. (1861 views)
Tasted by rhalbert on 12/27/2023 & rated 91 points: At peak imo. Beautiful aged Grenache (1752 views)
Tasted by beatles on 10/26/2023 flawed bottle: Not corked, tasting very nicely, but strangely lifeless. Lacking the tell tale Pegau notes of beefblood and rion, I think there is something wrong here. From PB's stash in France.
#Bagnols-en-Fôret (2791 views)
Tasted by Whitman on 10/6/2023 & rated 93 points: Exceptional nose with tons of herbs, tobacco and darker fruit. Rich and powerful with an outstanding balance of sweet fruit and tannins, also with kirsch, leading to a pretty long finish. Laurence Feraud compares this to 2017, but i feel 2017 has more "flesh" than 2005, but it is also younger. This has certainly a better nose. 92-93 p. (2348 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 8/15/2023 & rated 93 points: Typical nose of CDP, drank blind and guessed it correctly. Pronounced nose with black fruits, black currant, spices, leather. Medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin. (2533 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 6/10/2023 & rated 94 points: 2.5 hour decant. Teaspoon of very fine sediment. The color showed the first stages of bricking. After the first hour, the nose did not change thereafter. Some funk that never fully dissipated. Loads of extracted grenache fruit but the black fruits from the syrah and mourvèdre were showing well as well. Smooth with a palate coating mouthfeel. Touches of spice, Oak and minerals. This bottle had at least another 5 years in it and it might get better still. (2971 views)
Tasted by Cow Town on 6/7/2023 & rated 93 points: Showed age, but without an avalanche of brett. Good fruit, nice acid, and some noticeable tannins. Not the best bottle of Pegau, but still pretty good. (2789 views)
Tasted by chitowncdpguy on 4/28/2023: Wow. Fabulous. Lots of secondaries, but still a very noticeable beam of red berry fruit. Rich, but not sweet or sappy. Long. Smooth. Love it. (2826 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 4/20/2023: Ruby/garnet color. Fantastic nose of bark, tobacco, raspberry, and herb. Medium weight but glycerine and mouth coating. As on the nose, a terrific combination of sweet fruit and darker savory elements with acid and tannins to balance. Chewy and completely clean. Prototypical Chateauneuf that will linger at this very high level for a long time. (3198 views)
Tasted by shafer1994 on 3/16/2023 & rated 94 points: A „hidden champion“. Deep color, complex nose. A very reluctant wine is slowly opening up. (By the way: I see a parallel development with the Beaucastel ). Youthful but still conservative, powerful. In essence the wine has everything a excellent C9P needs: garrigue, dark berries, chocolate, espresso, thyme, vanilla. Oily texture, some silky tannins left. Long finish. Many years left. (2792 views)
Tasted by Erik R. on 3/14/2023: Professional reviewer's drinking windows wildly optimistic. This is raisons and prune jucie. (2731 views)
Tasted by Matt T on 3/5/2023 & rated 90 points: This was stored since release and had a perfect cork. Popped and poured and this seemed very mature. A lot of bacon, bbq, and a bit of stewed fruit. This was opulent and frankly a bit raisiny. Good complexity and appreciated by the company, but I think I have moved on to a different style. (2542 views)
Tasted by ppearson9 on 2/28/2023 flawed bottle: first one no good. (2528 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 2/14/2023 & rated 93 points: Subsequent notes on this wine from 8 years ago. Deep reddish-violet garnet in color with some clearing at the edges. Full, forward, fragrant & attractive nose of ripe fruits aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & boysenberries with classic garrigue & floral notes, earthy/dusty, anise, coffee, herbal notes of sage & thyme, leather, minerals & a hint of cedar in the background. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blackberries & mulberries with spices, herbs, coffee & minerals. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present but at 18 years of age is close to or at its peak of development. It should hold here for several more years although no further development would be anticipated. Fill was mid to lower neck; cock was clean & intact. (2603 views)
Tasted by Vignette Lab on 1/30/2023 & rated 90 points: First of a case which has been perfectly cellared. Difficult to reconcile this bottle against other notes on this site so this note added for balance. Very rich black cherry in colour, slightly translucent at the edge but very dense colour overall. Quite a lot of sediment noted with this bottle so caution taken in decanting and pour.

Essentially undrinkable after a 3 hour decant. Completely overpowered by stewed fruits and unduly rich Christmas pudding flavors. Checked progressively through the evening but after 6 hours it was still aggressive and (I’m sorry to say) quiet unpleasant. It was disappointing for a long term Pegau fan.

Left overnight and 24 hours later the wine is nicely tamed. Still very rich flavoured with field mushroom, cigar box and leather with dark chocolate and semi dried prunes. Tannins are fine and no hint of bret here.

A good wine day 2 but still presenting on the overdone side (even for a weathered CNP and Pegau fan). I will need to visit another bottle from this case shortly to see if this particular bottle represents variation as it stands out negatively against other notes here. (2583 views)

Sommelier Journal, June 2009
(Domaine de Pegau Châteauneauf-du-Pape, Rhône) Aromas of dark fruits—plum, black cherry, fig—and hints of earthiness. This bold wine bridges the gap between the older, classic styles of the region and the more modern, “cleaned-up” versions. It’s intensely flavored and full-bodied, with layers of complexity and the structure to age beautifully for many years to come. Hot Picks

Domaine du Pégau is a beloved icon of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape, crafting wines that dually epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône while being unmistakably Pégau. Long owned by the Féraud family, the estate is run by the charming Laurence, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father Paul. Despite receiving six 100-point scores in less than 10 years, Domaine du Pégau is a down to earth specimen of Southern France hospitality.

Pégau produces three high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: the traditional Cuvée Reservée, the special Cuvée Laurence, and the incredible Cuvée da Capo (made from the best grapes in only the best years). These wines are aged in large old oak foudres for at least 18 months in the case of the Reservée, and much longer for Laurence and Capo.

Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate summarizes the house style as follows: “This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.” Furthermore, he continues “I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979.” Heady praise indeed from the world’s leading wine critic.

Domaine du Pégau’s wine have developed a cult-like following among savvy consumers, who adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

“There is a secret in the knowledge transmitted over generations.” — Laurence Féraud

Domaine du Pegau is run by Laurence Feraud and her father Paul.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
