Tasted by dbkitc on 9/2/2023 & rated 96 points: The note from January holds. This is a special bottle that is just a great example of this type of wine. If you enjoy this style, run don’t walk. But if not, that’s ok - these are already tough to find and afford. What a great wine to match with cheese. (96) (803 views)
Tasted by europat55 on 7/20/2023 & rated 94 points: Very unique! (641 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 2/17/2023 & rated 96 points: Wow. This is just special. Golden color. Nose just bursts with raw corn, hay, roasted nuts and yeast. Dry, juicy, oxidized fruit. The palate is so long. Lasts for a minute plus. So complex. So long. What a way to finish an evening. There is a sweet perception to the feel of this wine that is just wild - it’s totally dry. Crazy fun. (96) (999 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 4/29/2022: First bottle of vin jaune; unsure at this point if this bottle may be off; the nose was very savory with sauteed mushroom and a meaty almost feral note; there was some underlying nuttiness and maybe citrus, but hard to get past the other smells; the palate was flat and somewhat disjointed. Left open and will revisit. (1242 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 11/26/2021 & rated 94 points: Rich nose of citrus, hazelnuts, butter, minerals, and herbs. Good acidity on the palate with more citrus and lemon, as well as herbs. Nice finish. This felt quite tight to be honest and in need of time. Very promising Vin Jaune, though, but not as enjoyable now as the 2009 Labet we had the previous night. 94++ (1588 views)
Tasted by barrkel on 3/28/2021 flawed bottle: My most recent bottle seemed to have some bacterial contamination, with a hint of mousiness almost tending towards beer in the aftertaste. The bottle lacked some clarity in acidity too. I enjoyed previous bottles so perhaps it's a one-off. (1456 views)
Tasted by Rico100 on 3/22/2021 & rated 95 points: Very interesting and different wine. I loved it but Stirling not so much. Dry and nuanced but wonderful. (1377 views)
Tasted by Rico100 on 12/19/2019 & rated 95 points: Wonderfully interestnig white - completely different but scrumptious. Brought to Big Dan's lunch - twas a hit - get more! (1891 views)
Tasted by JohnTheBastard on 8/16/2019 & rated 97 points: I need more of this in my cellar. Showed great at the end of our Jura tasting, with lots of hazelnut, grapefruit, and salinity on top of the flor and oxidized Chardonnay. Explosive when paired with old Gouda. A completely foreign experience for most of the tasters, but embraced with enthusiasm. (1802 views)
Tasted by barrkel on 5/20/2018 & rated 95 points: Great example of vin jaune. Sherry-like flavours, savoury throughout, but with marked freshness, bright acidity, salty mineral finish. Very good with cheese. Very strong flavours the warmer it gets, and long finish. Powerful. (2047 views)
Tasted by Deux Chevaux on 4/21/2018: Brilliant golden. Bright, with bracing acidity framing everything we want and expect from a vin jaune: dried nuts, hint of curry, caramel, and savory grasses. And as we would hope, an astonishingly long finish. Super stuff, nursed out in relatively small pours over four nights. (1702 views)

Vin Jaune

Vin jaune (French for "yellow wine") is a special and characteristic type of white wine made in the Jura wine region in eastern France. It is similar to dry fino Sherry and gets its character from being matured in a barrel under a film of yeast, known as the voile, on the wine's surface.

Jura

A petite and relatively obscure wine region in eastern France, between Burgundy and the Swiss border. Its geographical isolation has helped it to remain a rare bastion of traditional winemaking techniques, and today it produces some of the most distinctive wines in the world. Reds from the Jura are often light-bodied, earthy, berried, and reminiscent of the village wines of Burgundy (though here they are made of local grapes like Poulsard and Trousseau). While Chardonnay features widely, the true specialty of the region is the Vin Jaune (“yellow wine”) made from the white Savagnin grape. Cloudy, difficult Vin Jaune is made only in the best vintages, and must be aged for at least six years before being released. As it ages under a layer of yeast, known locally as “voile,” the wine slowly oxidizes, leading to complex aromas and flavors that range from walnut skin to sultana to spices and truffles. Famously long lived it is always sold in dumpy 62 cl bottle - the wine lost in production having been taken by les anges.
