Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 60 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by crewald on 9/25/2023: Had with roasted chicken and smashed potatoes. Served pretty cold. Uneven. First impression of blueberries and blackberries and black cherries. But then a wave of roughness, then back to the black fruits. Ended with more tannic roughness. (195 views)
Tasted by crewald on 9/30/2021: Had again with Wagyu burgers. Just fine. Not spectacular, but ok. Some heat on the end of the bottle. Cork looked seriously dodgy but bottle was good. Bright ruby, little bricking. (361 views)
Tasted by crewald on 2/20/2021: Double decanted and drank last night with Wagyu burgers. Tons of blueberry, round mouthfeel, no signs of being over the hill. (462 views)
Tasted by SWatson on 11/26/2018 & rated 90 points: Still drinking pretty well. Plenty of fruit and structure. My guess is it has a few more years comfortably. (1204 views)
Tasted by Harddriv on 4/18/2017 & rated 90 points: Took about an hour for the initial bottle funk to dissipate, but opened up nicely after that. Probably time to drink 'em if you got 'em. (1881 views)
Tasted by Grant_gib on 1/30/2016 & rated 88 points: Still quite a bit of acid, good notes, dark blueberry snd smooth on the finish.
One more in the cellar...revisit in 5 years. (2481 views)
Tasted by cookie7 on 1/5/2016: Lots of plum and licorice on the palate. Flabby and showing heat. I believe this wine's best days are behind it. (2362 views)
Tasted by Mossrose on 8/22/2015 flawed bottle: Marred by a disagreeable vinegar acidity which sometimes ebbed but kept returning over 5 days of being tasted. Often included a sharp and volatile smell. Despite being stored perfectly, the cork was weak and crumbly. (54 views)
Tasted by HappyWineGuy on 4/8/2014: I liked this wine very much when I first had it at a tasting so I bought a few bottles. Haven't liked either bottle. Too bad because it was $50 a bottle. (3060 views)
Tasted by sayward on 11/28/2013 & rated 87 points: This wine had an over ripe CA Syrah nose which was encouraging. I decided to not decant this wine. I would say that I believe this was the correct decision. My major issue with this wine was that the finish was very green and vegetal. Even a little thin. Now I see why other tasters say that this wine is at end of life. I have seen this with other Red Car wines and it has not always been true. Unfortunately it was true with this bottle. Drink up. (2689 views)
Tasted by mouton45 on 4/21/2013 & rated 92 points: Drinking great. This is a much better wine than I expected (2528 views)
Tasted by ScottPreston on 3/16/2013 & rated 90 points: I felt this wine was 1 year past its prime. Still has good fruit and structure, but definitely losing its freshness. Drink now (2503 views)
Tasted by bigcat on 8/16/2012 & rated 84 points: Iffy, at best. (2992 views)
Tasted by cookie7 on 6/8/2012: A weird wine - always has been. olive tapenade, tart with a metallic finish (2227 views)
Tasted by MurphyCellar on 12/8/2011 & rated 88 points: Still a bit tannic, but overall a good syrah with nice earthy notes. (2273 views)
Tasted by MondovinoCA on 11/29/2011 & rated 91 points: Tar, earth and rustic fruit. Nice wine, hold for another 3-4 years. (743 views)
Tasted by DTWOB on 10/3/2011 & rated 87 points: That is the highest I will go with a wine as "tart" as this one. (1997 views)
Tasted by bigcat on 8/14/2011 & rated 87 points: Very mediocre. A little stringy. Not much body but it is better then the last one I had. Hopefully will continue to improve. (2031 views)
Tasted by jaxpaj on 1/7/2011 & rated 91 points: My final bottle and by far the best. The 91 may be low but this takes into effect the inconsistency of the wine from bottle to bottle. Nose of barbecue!?! I actually went and washed my hands after I smelt the wine, wondering if somehow I got some barbecue sauce on my hand. Hits you right up front with graphite and earth and then the dark fruit and charred meat show up. Absolutely needs to be paired with heavy food, would go nicely with baby back ribs! Wish the other 2 bottles I had were even close to this one. (2262 views)
Tasted by herberto on 6/18/2010 & rated 82 points: Ripe, bitter. Everything that is wrong with Cali Syrah. (2435 views)
Tasted by joshwoodward on 5/30/2010 & rated 92 points: Wine Club: Party Like it's 1949 (Bowling Green, OH): Mmm. Warning: this thing was sour, with high-toned vinegar-y acidity. And I didn't mind it a bit. Mouthwatering, with a massive depth of meaty flavor. Polarizing, but delicious. (2851 views)
Tasted by jaxpaj on 5/5/2010 & rated 86 points: I just don't get it. Opened the second bottle and at least it was drinkable. If this was a $15 bottle I could understand the ratings, relative value, maybe. This is a very stringent and harsh wine. Dark purple, quite a bit of heat, and nothing lush at all. For the price I would have to say this is the worst I have had. Will not buy again. (2714 views)
Tasted by jaxpaj on 5/3/2010 flawed bottle: Hope the other bottles are ok. Nose of a locker room and a distinct flavor of paint thinner. (2712 views)
Tasted by green-steve on 12/4/2009 & rated 92 points: Wowser!! Beautiful juice - dark garnet, leggy wine; blue fruit and meat on the nose; jammy palate of blueberries, spice, and a little pepper; nice acidity, fine tannins, long killer finish. A beautiful bottle. (2901 views)
Tasted by pgruber on 12/1/2009 & rated 93 points: Love this stuff, but died after a day. (2929 views)

Red Car

Producer website

Red Car is a boutique winery focused on producing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Roussanne, Rose of Pinot Noir, and Syrah from a network of cold-climate vineyards located in the West Sonoma Coast. The wines are made in small lots utilizing minimalist intervention techniques like native yeast fermentation, gravity flow, and natural acid. Each winegrowing decision emphasizing crafting aromatic wines of complexity, finesse and balance. The low yields, hands-on farming and extraordinary cold climate of Red Car’s vineyards enable the wines to offer intensity of flavor without the weight of excessive alcohol.

Red Car was founded by winemaker Carroll Kemp and partners Mark Estrin and Richard Crowell in 2000 with 50 cases of wine from a single ton of grapes. The winery name is a tribute to the electric trolley cars that ran throughout Los Angeles from the late 19th century through the early 1960’s. These evocative “red cars” provided transportation in a romanticized time and place.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
