Tasted by paul195 on 7/16/2023 & rated 95 points: 5 of 12 decanted @ 5:00 and brought to Claud for 7:30 dinner were it was paired with the 2009 VR Beaux Monts.

Darker color and more restrained nose than the 2009. Darker fruited than the bottle last summer, some spice and earth notes, well integrated tannins, balanced, long finish. This was an excellent bottle but didn’t hit the heights of the bottle last last summer. The best glass was the last glass… I think a longer decant would have helped somewhat (755 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 3/10/2023 flawed bottle: heat damaged (1319 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 3/5/2023 & rated 92 points: Consistent with several other experiences with this wine, it just doesn't perform as you would expect. Very pretty on the nose and faint Leroy spice with nice balance, but just didn't do it for me. (1044 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/3/2023 flawed bottle: Heat damaged? (1926 views)
Tasted by BradE on 8/7/2022: Absolutely fantastic. A great bottle that met very high expectations. Loved by all. (1784 views)
Tasted by paul195 on 8/6/2022 & rated 98 points: 4 of 12 en flight with the 1988 and 2001 DRC Grands Echezeaux (replaced the scheduled 1993 which was MIA). Decanted for 2 hours. This was the definition of a Wow wine at a wonderful dinner filled with 14 other great bottles. This bottle had it all, beautiful youthful color, layers of fresh, bright cherry fruit, Vosne spice and floral notes rise from the glass, the definition of a compelling bouquet. The palate was filled with layers of Vosne fruit and spice, without a hint of the vintages heat. Fine silky tannins, perfect balance, acidity and a long finish make this wine a star (1136 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 3/10/2022 & rated 97 points: Perfectly mature and balanced with ripe, rich fruit of the vintage countered by freshness and dazzling notes of Leroy spice. Long, long finish. (1578 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/10/2022 & rated 96 points: Some Wine Tasted at the Zachys La Paulée Auction; 3/10/2022-3/11/2022 (Le Bernardin Prive - New York NY): Perfect expression of Vosne from a ripe vintage with lush red cherry, berry, liqueur, and perfumed spicebox and silky structure. Good weight and a long-ish lingering finish. (1947 views)
Tasted by clayfu on 3/3/2022: one of the first great burgundy I've had the pleasure of tasting many moons ago. From the same cellar as the Richebourg - even fresher and more acid driven than the Richebourg. It doesn't quite have the same level of mouth coating fruit that the Richebourg had but it still has incredible fresh complex purity of red fruit on the palate. Less of the tannin presence as it seems more seamless on the finish. Quite nice! (1972 views)
Tasted by mye on 2/14/2022: PnP. From the same cellar and shows the same youthful energy and density of fruit. Pretty, earthy, complex, what's not to like? (1274 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 12/10/2021: Holiday Burgundy Lunch: Lot of discussion around the table about VA. In my experience a lot of Leroy Beaux Monts from the 90's have some VA. I've not been bothered by it generally, but VA sensitive people will want to avoid this. This particular bottle had more VA than I would have preferred, it overwhelmed the other aromas. But the flavor was still there, the rose petals in all their glory. (1375 views)
Tasted by WIBA on 11/21/2020 & rated 89 points: lots of dark fruits and very structured. quite a full body wine. Prefer over the 91 but not quite comparable to the younger 2000s. (1778 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 11/21/2020 & rated 94 points: Compelling floral, sousbois aromatics. Modest sweetness on the palate, which fades somewhat. Relatively good 1990 Leroy. (5089/9298) (1931 views)
Tasted by paul195 on 8/19/2020 & rated 97 points: (Bottle 7942/9298) #2 of 12 and paired with the 1990 Leroy NSG les Boudots

A treat to have these two side by side. The VR was strikingly young, tight and packed with red fruit, Vosne spice. Fine tannins, impressive mid palate, lovely texture, balance and finish. The Boudots was more mature, with darker fruits and a touch of earthiness.

Hard to believe these are 30 year old premier crus (1837 views)
Tasted by SommStags on 8/11/2018 & rated 94 points: I gave the wine air as it needed it. Wine came around 1.5-2 hours into decanting. Wine had all the classic VR and Leroy characteristics and was quite lovely. More feminine in nature. Don’t see the wine declining for quite a while so don’t feel the need to rush to pop. It is in a pretty good place but may benefit from another 5 years. Don’t think it is worth current auction prices but hey that’s Leroy and Burgundy these days. (3166 views)
Tasted by dream on 7/25/2018 & rated 94 points: Intense nose of ripe dark cherry and dark raspberry. Dark cherry-fruited on the palate and very ripe with strong balancing acidity. Great intensity here and the finish is borderline extraordinary with a great and aggresive cherry/mineral crunch and loads of complexity with notes of Vosne violet spice and red licorice. Certainly in its drinking window but I imagine more complex Vosne spices will emerge with more time. Purchased on release for $60. 94+ (3175 views)
Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 12/21/2017 & rated 92 points: Dark pure colour.
Earthy, plummy, raspberry fruit with cherry stone zest.
Soft, developed and open knit structure. Has good presence, intensity, and depth of dark fruit and spice flavours. Fleshy, with soft refined tannins and good acidity. Lovely ripe fruits and rich dark spice with an autumnal edge. Drinking well, no point keeping, very ready but not yet in any serious decline. (3267 views)
Tasted by etyc on 8/18/2017: '96 & pre Vosne GC dinner.

Very nice floral nose that tightened up after some time in the glass. Velvety texture, but with tannins' still very much intact/alive. Like the nose, this clamped up after some time, and ended with a somewhat dry note. This apparently still needs more time for it to be fully integrated... (3883 views)
Tasted by JS1056 on 6/3/2017 & rated 98 points: Incredible Pinot, if not the best I ever have had, it was close. Elegant earthy nose.
Rich, elegant balanced. Earth, mushroom and muted spices with a finish that went on and on. It is really difficult to describe this wine because it was so complete that there was no one thing that stood out, rather, just that this was "memorable". (3912 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 3/28/2017 & rated 96 points: S/JR dinner. This is a serious wine. Leroy, stemmy aromas. Sweetness and richness with medicinal finish. Goes on and on, kept improving. (3957/9298) (3148 views)
Tasted by blacktruffle on 3/27/2016 & rated 94 points: Dark opaque red. Very expressive nose of earth, spice, and hoisin. Sweet on the palate and showing lots of ripe fruit. This is drinking well now, but I will be slow to consume my bottles as the tannins are abundant, and this wine can use more time in bottle, not necessarily for further development, which may come, but to soften the palate a little more. Still, the fruit is also abundant, and masks the tannins early on. A pleasure to drink.

Compared to the 1993 tasted side by side, the 1990 had a little less acidity, more ripe fruit, and dusty tannins. Similar notes on the second day from re-corked bottles. On the third day, the 1990 showed more powerful tannins, but the fruit was still there and the wine was drinking well. The 1993, in contrast, was more acidic and the fruit had faded; it was no longer as pleasant to drink.

Both beautiful wines. I preferred the 1990 at this tasting. (4293 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 3/16/2016 flawed bottle: Alas this was off. Weird combo of acetate and sewage. Shame. (3683 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/29/2015 & rated 95 points: Burg Dinner with Friends (Puligny-Montrachet): Still just a baby with lots of fresh red fruit, fresh herbs and sweet spice. This is a large-scaled wine that is easy to enjoy, but I think has barely scratched the surface for its potential. Served alongside Jean Gros 1988 Richebourg, which was a fascinating contrast. (5105 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 4/3/2015: Another funky bottle. The nose was closed and very dirty and musty. This did not blow off. It was not corked. The palate was much better with ripe red and black fruit and lovely spice. Still, I am looking for the full experience with this wine. (3968 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 2/28/2015 & rated 94 points: Sweet fruit and sap on the nose. Sweet dark raisin and light spice on the palate with a somewhat distracting sweetness. Personally I would like a little more earth and acid. Would give this wine a few more years yet. (3688 views)

Domaine Leroy

Producer website

Domaine Leroy is a negociant/wine producer based in the Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy. It makes a range of wines from Pinot Noir that comes from some of the most iconic vineyards in the world, including Le Chambertin, Musigny, Clos de Vougeot and Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and is second only to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in terms of price and quality. Those wines made from estate grown fruit are sold under the Domaine Leroy label.

The domaine was founded by Francois Leroy, a wine merchant based in Auxey-Duresses, in 1868. It was expanded under his son Joseph and grandson Henri throughout the early 1900s, and in 1942, Henri Leroy was involved with the purchase of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti alongside Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. Leroy and Villaine saw massive potential in the plots and vines DRC already held and, rather than see the domaine split up among various proprietors, decided to buy it together.

In 1974, Henri's daughter Lalou Leroy took over this co-management of DRC alongside Aubert de Villaine; she had also inherited Maison Leroy from her father after his death in 1980. Leroy left Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1991 following a dispute with Villaine, and began to focus on her own domaine.

Domaine Leroy was expanded in 1988 with the purchase of estates in Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin, and with 21 hectares (52 acres) of vineyards, became a domaine. These holdings include plots in several grand cru sites in the Côte de Nuit, as well as in Corton, plots in eight premier cru vineyards, and vineyards that fall under both village and regional appellations. While most of Domaine Leroy's wines are red, there are a few white wines made from Chardonnay and Aligoté as well.

Lalou Bize-Leroy also owns and directs Domaine d'Auvenay.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Les Beaux Monts

Beaux Monts covers a little over 11 hectares and is further subdivided into Beaux Monts, Les Hautes Beaux Monts, Les Beaux Monts Hauts, and Les Beaux Monts Bas. It borders the grand cru vineyard of Echézeaux, though at a higher altitude. Quality is variable with some wines described as "weedy" and they are typically less dense than wines from lower altitudes. Better examples may have a high-toned perfume. Top producers for Beaux Monts include Domaine Bertagna, Bruno Clavelier, Leroy, Hudelot-Noëllats, Louis Jadot, and Henri Jayer.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Vosne Romanée is one of the smallest wine villages in Burgundy The wines possess diverse characteristics, but they can generally considered to have complexity and longevity beyond nearly all other wines in the world. The village has six grand crus: Romanée-Conti, La Romanée, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and La Grande Rue. While there is monopoly control of four of the six grand crus, the village has at least forty growers sharing its vineyards. The top premier cru includes Les Malconsorts, Cros Parantoux, Les Chaumes, and Clos des Réas.
