Tasted by Apeek19 on 12/30/2023: A solid wine but nothing special to me at this point. Limited nose and structure, would have preferred this a few years younger. (369 views)
Tasted by WetRock on 11/12/2023: Very purple yet, barely showing any age. The fruit is rich enough to overwhelm the structure out of the gate. Overnight that balances out quite nicely. Its still on the softer side and definitely not a structure forward wine. The restraint on the ripeness and new oak really pay off now. You get all those secondary subtleties emerging from the primary fruit fading out. Nice wine. In the zone. (644 views)
Tasted by RichEB1 on 11/10/2023 & rated 92 points: As others noted, this is drinking really well....at least from half bottle. Still a bit young but the fruit is fairly well integrated with the oak. Really lovely restrained black cherry fruit and plenty of structure. No rush at all but I really enjoyed this! (684 views)
Tasted by acidqueen on 11/9/2023 & rated 96 points: This is still wonderful and getting better. It has years ahead of it, but drinking it now is irresistible. Amarena cherry, blackberry, lilac, licorice, tobacco are the flavors, in an elegant and seductive package with fine light tannins and perfect acidity. 13.6% alcohol. In 750 ml this will last years still. (509 views)
Tasted by jhkey on 10/27/2023: This wine is at peak. Absolutely astounding. Rich cherry compote, eucalyptus, leather, clove, spices. Drink now. Wow. (503 views)
Tasted by EJDALEwine on 5/6/2023 & rated 94 points: Grand well aged cabernet. Explodes flavors into your mouth. My last 2001. (663 views)
Tasted by houstonjeff@hotmail.com on 1/7/2023 & rated 95 points: still my favorite vintage of Cathy! (937 views)
Tasted by EJDALEwine on 9/6/2022 & rated 95 points: This is a marvelous cab, 2001, and still fully aliye. Corison is doing wine every bit as good as the fine bordeau houses, and with a continually improving life of many yeara. I have one more bottle, so now, when to drink it? (1242 views)
Tasted by Erik R. on 1/22/2022: Brutally corked. (1730 views)
Tasted by coremill on 10/16/2021 & rated 91 points: Consistent with previous notes, perhaps thinning slightly on the finish. Drink up? (1839 views)
Tasted by EJDALEwine on 10/7/2021 & rated 93 points: Phenominal. Cherry tobacco leather. Long soft finish. (1626 views)
Tasted by acyso on 3/21/2021 & rated 93 points: Sunday hangout (socially distanced) (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. I did pick up some cabernet notes here (bell pepper mostly) but I was thinking more along the lines of a Super Tuscan than anything. Clearly mature, with some black fruit and a bit of a herbal thing that someone said was American oak (I couldn't quite get to Rioja myself). Lots of dark cherry and ripe fruit, but this never got to over-the-top territory. (3133 views)
Tasted by Margaux Bro on 12/28/2020 & rated 96 points: Absolutely killer wine, and in a great spot. Cathy Corison calls this her favorite vintage ever. I think you could stack this up against many of the finest wines in the world and it could hang with them. Its in a great spot now, but will continue to be serviceable for at least the next 5 years. (1991 views)
50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Smaak / Afdronk: 17 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 91/100

Color: Deep dark red with a subtle beginning of an orange-brown discoloration at the edges. Aroma / bouquet: A remarkably fragile bouquet with a limited expressiveness in which - just like in 2009 - the roasted tones stand out. Smoky with notes of mocha and bitter chocolate. In addition, dark cherry fruit, menthol and fennel. Taste / Finish: Also in the mouth this 2001 Corison shows itself ripe with smoky notes. Full and powerful, mouth-filling, a beautiful harmony in which especially the beautifully aged tannins provide structure and balance. Overall / Potential: At the moment this wine is at a seriously better stage than in 2009 when I rated it with 84 points. The concentration and balance are now more than convincing. 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Taste / Finish: 17 + Overall / potential: 8 = 91/100 (1705 views)
Tasted by coremill on 11/22/2020 & rated 92 points: A lovely Cabernet. Bright black cassis fruit, a hint of chocolate some gravel undertones, layered concentration, fine, rich tannins, good length. Exactly what I want in a CA cabernet of this age. No rush on these but drinking very well now. (1645 views)
Tasted by Jen P-W on 7/22/2020: Aged too long in cellar (1979 views)
Tasted by HitAnyKey on 6/2/2020 & rated 92 points: Paired wonderfully with grill lamb. Solid structure, well balanced, and elegant. Still has quite a good amount of life left to it. (1704 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 5/4/2019: Blind: I thought this was a Napa Cabernet. It has all the hallmark traits of toasty oak, black cassis and that ooomph. Surprised at the low ABV. (2660 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 5/3/2019: Poured blind next to the 2001 Cos d'Estournel. This Corison initially led me to syrah when I first started to swirl it in the glass, showing a white/purple flower note. Also seemed to throw off something pungent, which I jotted down as higher ABV, although the table took me to task a bit because the bottle lists the wine as in the high 13% range. The palate seemed a bit more modern too, with a jammy quality. Blue fruit and some razzy red, plus black cherry. The finish then turned tight and rough so I bet this wine goes a lot longer. (2885 views)
Tasted by Presidio Wine Bunker on 3/8/2019 & rated 93 points: In a fantastic place. 93+ (2475 views)
Tasted by achasd on 3/2/2019 & rated 93 points: This is Cathy's great vintage and it shows. The wine is deep, notes of cassis, and, most remarkably still evolving. After being open an hour, it showed well but promised more for the future. Alas, my last bottle (for now). (2269 views)
Tasted by M.Batard on 12/17/2018 & rated 92 points: This bottle was up a notch on my prior ones; thank goodness I have a half case left. Elegant wine, with finesse and very long finish. Beat the pants off the Corison ‘02 we compared alongside. (2304 views)
Tasted by 10centpower on 11/21/2018: In good shape, but didn't get that WOW of layered aromas and flavors typical of well aged Corison. Maybe an off bottle and/or needed more air. Still 90+ but this one was below expectations. In no way was it over the hill though - if anything needs more time. (1913 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/18/2018 & rated 91 points: Monthly Tasting Group: Old Reds 2008 and Earlier (Tilia, Mpls): Small taste. Agree with 10centpower, quite good, but not as moving as had hoped. (2166 views)
Tasted by jsmadsen on 9/23/2018 & rated 95 points: Beautiful purity, length and structure. Focused and elegant; opened after 3 hours in a decanter, could use more time, next bottle in 5 years. (1823 views)

Corison

Producer website

Corison Winery is located just south of the town of St. Helena in the upper Napa Valley. They are on the west side of Highway 29, about a quarter mile north of Zinfandel Lane, at 987 St. Helena Highway, Saint Helena, CA 94574.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
