Tasted by jocelyng on 7/9/2017 & rated 93 points: Fantastic wine !
Sweet plum, chocolate milk. Beginning to have tertiairy mushroom notes but in a still youthful core of fruits. Full bodied with very good length and complexity. Great now but still has at least 4-5 years ahead, but no need to wait. I will surely wait for my more recent vintages.

Tasted by Zingrrl on 12/2/2016 & rated 85 points: I think this wine is done. I drank this over two nights. Sour and thin the first. Much better the second and better with food. There is zero upside to holding it. By the way, properly cellared since purchase in 2007. I can't vouch for before that. (3122 views)
Tasted by King JR on 10/1/2016 & rated 89 points: Really vibrant nose. Still quite inky burgundy color. Plent of soft tannins. Nose much more pleasing than taste. Flavor was somewhat astringent berries and a slight pinch on the finish. I'll try my last bottle soon to see if similar. Still, a nice bottle. Needs food. Put the last quarter of the bottle in a beautiful beef brisket recipe. Outstanding contribution to the meal! (3369 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 9/28/2016 & rated 93 points: Mainly Sangiovese (80-95%) with small parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Macerated with the skins for 14 days. Fermented in barriques (1st, 2nd and 3rd use), 10 yo botti casks and cement vats. Aged for 15 months in French barriques and tonneaux of 1st, 2nd and 3rd use and in 10 yo botti casks, and a further 6 months in bottles before release. Annual production 50,000 bottles.

Still pretty youthful, somewhat translucent dark cherry color. Enormously attractive, fragrant and ripe bouquet with sweet aromas of cherry jam, blackberry marmalade, baked plums, some chokeberry, a little kirsch, a hint of licorice and a touch of barnyard. After the opulent, sweet nose the dry, almost austere and acid-driven medium-bodied palate comes as quite a surprise. Dry, intense flavors of pronounced licorice, even Finnish salty licorice, peppery spice, sour cherry, some herbal bitterness, alittle stony minerality, a little exotic spices and a hint of dry cedary wood. The wine is still very youthful, almost angular and full of focus and depth. Surprisingly easy tannins for the style. Very long, structured and slightly grippy finish with flavors of pepper-driven spice, sour cherry, tart cranberry, some bitter herbs and a little licorice.

Though the difference between the nose and the taste of the wine is huge, the wine is still really stunning and utterly delicious. Probably a Sangiovese this light (well, not light, but neither big and bold), dry and acid-driven is not to everyone's tastes, but for me, this wine was all about elegance, sophistication and poise. The wine is still quite young, so I'd say it starts to drink nicely after 5-10 more years. The second best wine in a Torrione vertical of 2004-1994, right after the stunning vintage 1997. A cellarworthy red for people who prefer elegance and precision over ripeness and extraction. Really beautiful. (3257 views)
Tasted by Zingrrl on 9/2/2016 & rated 85 points: Something amiss with this bottle. It's been properly stored since purchase in 2007. Cork came out fine. Nose beautiful with raspberry and briar. Taste was off. Thin and watery with a slightly sharp finish. Improved slightly the second night but needed food to be good. Better with cashews of all things... (3238 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 5/12/2016 & rated 92 points: Last of four bottles. Drank over two consecutive evenings with Italian based food which included pasta. Mature and drinking well, tannins and oak have been resolved. Dark and brooding, a bit tight initially even with a decant, but it had come around by night #2. Complex palate with a good mix of dried red fruits, notes of cedar mulch mixed with dark earth, wood spice, taunt leather, and some espresso. Ends with a very long finish. Should drink well for another 4-5 years if stored properly. Great QPR in the low $30's. (1717 views)
Tasted by Bam_Man on 8/3/2015 & rated 91 points: A youthful-looking, semi-opaque, dark magenta in color - lightening slightly right at the edge. Shows a pretty Tuscan nose of crushed dark berries, flowers, earth and spice. Full-bodied, rich and very silky in texture. There's excellent depth and intensity to its delicious plum and raspberry fruit on the mid-palate. Very nicely balanced, with a mild-to-moderate acidity, velvety tannins and just a touch of oak and sweet spice on the long, fruit-filled finish. A rich, polished and delicious Torrione.

Tasted by Jochems on 7/8/2015 & rated 93 points: Totally in line with the previous bottle. What a great wine! (2116 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 4/11/2015 & rated 92 points: This was just so nice. Better than the last bottle which seemed to be mature. This had some life left. Dark opaque red/black color. Black currant and some sweet fruit, spice. Good balance and viscosity. Long finish. (2202 views)
Tasted by Jochems on 3/15/2015 & rated 93 points: This wine is drinking beautifully now!
I opened this bottle and it was consumed over 3 hours. It was already quite open after 30 minutes and stayed quite constant over the 3 hours.

Ruby color with no signs of ambering yet. Full aromas of Cherry, blackurrant evolving with some leather, pepper and hints of sage. Following through full bodied with concentrated fruit, chewy-smooth mouth coating tannins and balanced acidity. The finish is very long and keeps on lingering. This wine is well balanced and drinking great right now. Complexity has developed quite a bit and I think there is still a lot of structure and some development potential left. Drink now - 2020.

Reminds me of the '04 Flaccianello. (2267 views)
Tasted by Tannic Monster on 12/14/2014 & rated 92 points: On the nose: pepper, currant, and leather. On the Palate: Luscious mouth feel, perfect balance of tannins, acids, and fruit. Full bodied with a beautiful finish of cherry vanilla, blackberries, and sweet leather. This juice is way better than I expected. Great example of a Tuscan Sangiovese drinking at its peak...what a pleasure. (2288 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 5/28/2014 & rated 91 points: More mature since last bottle a year ago. Initial fruit is gone. Still very nice. (2377 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 5/25/2014 & rated 91 points: Another night of Italian wines with friends (Downtown Cleveland): Funny, this seemed more like Brunello than the actual BdM wines in the flight. It is 100% Sangiovese. Ruby/purple in color. The nose has cherries, truffles, dust and slight floral notes. Medium bodied. Nice acidity. On the palate, this has some complexity. I don't know how much better it gets as it seems mature. Tannins are all integrated. Nice cherry fruit left with a bit of forest floor and dried tea. Very food friendly. (3070 views)
Tasted by Openwines on 3/6/2014 & rated 90 points: Seems to have opened again after disappointing 12 months before. Beautiful mature wine still with fresh fruit, cherry aroma and a long finish. (2508 views)
Tasted by prism on 1/18/2014 & rated 91 points: Slow-O'd for 90 minutes. Deep violet red. Medium body. Soft, well integrated tannins, black cherry fruit. Delicious with Bolognese. No need to wait. (2560 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 5/17/2013 & rated 91 points: Drank over 2 days. Dark red/violet opaque color. Still fruit and good grip. Palate is dark berries, tar and spice. Medium finish. Just lovely. (3751 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 3/29/2013 & rated 92 points: Still youthful appearance displaying a dark plum color, with a medium plus texture. Short decant; initially a bit tight, but starts to open about 30 minutes in. Notes of dark cherries, tobacco, cedar, and some faint dark chocolate with that classic Tuscan earthy component in the background. The noticeable tannins mentioned in prior notes are starting loosen a bit; however this wine will drink well for another 5-8 years, there's plenty of stuffing here. Great powerful finish. Drink with decant or hold. (3166 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 3/2/2013 & rated 91 points: Very nice. Pnp, Drank over 2 days. Deep dark red. Black fruit and spice on the nose. Palate was nice with dark fruit, leather and spice. (3157 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 2/21/2013: PopnPour, tasted over 2 hours and on Day 2
-opaque deep red with no clearing
-nicely aromatic cassis jam
-med- acidity, med+ weight, tar, faint remnants of fruit but not much tertiary development either, finishes with aggressive tannins some heat and unresolved oak, acidity picks up on Day 2 giving it some verve
-past its fruit bomb days, but not sure where this will go; certainly room for positive development if it picks up tertiary features and complexity while the tannins and oak further resolve but that may be asking too much of it (3013 views)
Tasted by hkm520240 on 1/16/2013 & rated 90 points: Deep ruby reb, develoed quite well on the nose. Bottles breath for almost 2 hours. (3345 views)
Tasted by Al Ehrhardt on 10/28/2012: Nice wine with home made pizza's, but it is very modern. Big and dark for sangiovese. I don't think of black fruits with sangiovese and not much acidity. (2601 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 10/27/2012 & rated 91 points: PnP. Should have been decanted. This was bottle was a litte off compaired to thelast bottle. Dark red. Powerfull nose, sour cherries and wet earth, spice. Medium finish. (2103 views)
Tasted by vcgagnon on 9/29/2012 & rated 89 points: À boire maintenant. (2640 views)
Tasted by prism on 8/26/2012 flawed bottle: Well, this bottle was certainly flawed, in that (using a two lever cork pulled) the cork seemed stuck to the inside of the bottle and the neck snapped. Never had that happen before. Happened while on vacation, not at home, so did not risk a taste. (2712 views)
Tasted by KenYz on 5/22/2012 & rated 89 points: An additional layer or two of fruit would help a lot. The wine is balanced and medium length. (2749 views)

Fattoria Petrolo

Producer website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

The estate "Fattoria Petrolo", with its famous winery and prestigious production of Extra Virgin Olive Oil

The property covers 272 hectares (approximately 672 acres) with 31 hectares (over 76 acres) of specialized vineyards, 19 hectares (about 47 acres) of olive trees, and the rest natural plants and forest located at an altitude between 250 to 400 mt (750 to 1200 ft) above sea level and with a terrain of rocky stratifications of Galestro (a clay-like sediment).

The region is known as the Colli Aretini (Aretini hills) which encircle the Monti Chianti, historically known and declared in 1716 by the Archduke of Tuscany as a particularly precious wine and olive-producing region. The Petrolo Winery is part of the medieval fiefdom of "Galatrona" and its tower, built atop roman ruins, still exists. In fact, this is where the name for our Torrione wine comes from. The Winery was acquired by the Bazzocchi family in the 40s and since the middle of the 80s the proprietors have pursued a wine production based exclusively on the highest quality research.

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.
