Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 98 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Rani on 12/24/2023 & rated 93 points: Opened one hour prior to drinking. Lots of stuffing here, herbal notes, bright red fruit and a hint of vegetable stew. Lots of acidity on the palate. Tannins are rustic but not aggressive. Structured and lingering. (494 views)
Tasted by Caruso on 4/16/2023 & rated 96 points: From my warmer than textbook cellar reaching 18°C in summer with a perfect cork as corked yesterday. Garnet with no orange hue in thin layers. From the start medium intense and elegant, so nuanced nose of red currants, herbs, with swirling black fruits, dusty wood, thyme, oregano getting more intense over an hour of air (no decant). On the palate this is without any heavyness, excellent to outstanding intensity, refreshing acidity, still round but very present tannin and good length. 5/14/17/10. Though fully mature it has a long way to go, I believe. From a textbook cellar of 12°C whole year this may be quite young to fully appreciate it. But also true: After 2 hours in the partly emptied bottle it became less nuanced with dominating cherry notes and adstringency. 2023-2030 Dunnuck gave it 94 points in 2015 and a drinking window at least till 2025.  Tasted by LW31 on 2/18/2023: Charming fresh vintage for Trevallon. Showing a little more Syrah on nose. Medium depth. Not quite sure where this one is going. (977 views)
Tasted by Lordswood on 9/20/2022 & rated 91 points: As Trevallon always seems to, this has an incredibly interesting and delightful nose. Bright redcurrant fruit and full on acidity settled down with some time in the glass and the fruits darkened and the acidity smoothed out. Interesting….. (1200 views)
Tasted by acyso on 9/18/2022 & rated 90 points: Pausing for the Cause 2022 (Part 2) (Chicago, IL): From magnum. Yeah, it does kind of smell like cabernet and syrah. Certainly a very generous nose, which promises more than the palate has to offer unfortunately. There's a little thinness and less breadth on the palate, even though this finishes with an incredible amount of tannin. Hard to say whether more time is needed, or whether this was better a few years ago, to be honest. (1965 views)
Tasted by vagrantone on 1/10/2022 flawed bottle: There are really too many TCA problems with this wine; almost every other bottle... (1563 views)
Tasted by wineappellation on 9/24/2021 & rated 93 points: Mid ruby colorless rim. Look healthy at 17 years old.

High toned freshly picked juicy blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, pungent black pepper, herbaceous green bell pepper, graphite, cool soil, cedar, some leather and tobacco. Beautiful and elegant aroma.

Bright acidity, plenty of grippy tannins giving structure to this medium bodied bold wine. Undeniably elegant and fresh which is so Trevallon. A vintage to savor now and over the next decade. (1587 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 6/10/2021 & rated 92 points: Big, cassis dominated wine with minimal herbal notes. Really starting to open up. Lovely wine. (1700 views)
Tasted by shug14217 on 3/25/2021 & rated 94 points: Still replete with bright blackberry and damson fruit, graphite edge, polished oak notes, licorice, a touch of eucalyptus and spice, pencil shavings and plenty of acidity and tannins. Slightly lean when first opened but slowly evolving in decanter. After 4 hours, tannins slightly grippy but lovely and fine-grained. Some earthiness, a touch of leather and savoury, meaty edge. I think this has still got plenty of life in it and would be happy to try it in 5-10 years time. More rounded and plush than the 2003 (1566 views)
Tasted by Rolls223 on 8/31/2020 & rated 94 points: Medium body with a good acidity. Very little sign of evolution. Could be kept 3-5 more years. Nice wine (2083 views)
Tasted by violistus on 6/19/2020 & rated 95 points: This wine is not for wussies!

This was firing on all cylinders tonight, day 2, and much better on the 2nd night, as others have noted. This is of decidedly old-school stock, briny, and reminds one of a traditional old green St. Joseph, full of racy acid, freshness, and vibrancy. At the same time, it's mixed with singed rosemary, tart violets, lavender, damson fruit, and slightly bretty canned spinach. It's thrilling, still with gutsy high-toned tannins at the end, and very juicy. High acid year in Bandol etc. Lots of fun, love this gem of les Alpilles. (1843 views)
Tasted by vagrantone on 3/10/2020 & rated 91 points: By far the best showing yet for this wine, but I did have to wait for the second day for this wine really to open up....
Basically unevolved deep ruby hue with no signs of aging.
At first the nose the closed as was the case for previous bottles.
24 hours later, with some air, the nose open up to show some red fruit, smoky aromas ( Syrah dominated), brambly aromas.
On the palate, the tight and linear Cab Sauv character came through.
The aftertaste was both longer and more complex than in the past.
I will another 2-3 years before I continue drinking this wine.
reassuring tasting after all... (1885 views)
Tasted by vagrantone on 12/27/2019 & rated 87 points: Perhaps slightly better than the previous bottle but still a considerable disappointment.
Basically, this wine has no charm, which is not characteristic of this domaine.
Lean, mean, austere with little evolution taking place. The wine was decanted hoping to soften the unforgiving tannins. while there was a slight softening, it was insufficient to make this wine really pleasant. Only the cold cuts that it was served with helped out a little.
I'm less optimistic now than previously as to the future improvement of this wine. I will not count on it and will work my way through most of a case with low expectations. What went wrong that year? (1811 views)
Tasted by amc on 3/9/2019 & rated 90 points: Upon first opening, nose is dusty and jammy; on the palate stewed fruit, a bit disjointed acid on the finish and somewhat monotone -- however, from 30 mins to 2 hrs of breathing (in the bottle) it evolved and was lovely. Round, silky mouthfeel. Ripe dark fruit, classic soft cabernet tones dominate - wood, hint of cocoa, lingering tannins. Enjoyable now and enough life for a couple of years but needs time to open. (2258 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 12/24/2018 & rated 92 points: I bought six of these off the back of a spectacular bottle of the 01 earlier this year. Not much love for this vintage on CT but this bottle was singing. Red fruited, hints of cassis, touch of herbs but deep red fruits at the youthful end of maturity. No problems with tannins here. Gave the wine a three hour decant. Very enjoyable if not up to the glory of the 01. (2111 views)
Tasted by Emmanuel13008 on 8/31/2018 & rated 92 points: Très frais, très fin, très agréable à boire.
Ses 14 années ne se voyaient pas.
Encore une bouteille en cave qui va attendre encore quelques années. (1832 views)
Tasted by Imagnu on 6/27/2018 flawed bottle: Flawed (2609 views)
Tasted by Jbrad on 4/27/2018: Losing some luster. Drink now. (2514 views)
Tasted by La Grappe on 4/6/2018 & rated 89 points: A bright colour, red with a hint of garnet; quite full, perfumed fruit, and rather thick tannin. Still young and, although approachable now, it should improve further. However, it might be a long wait, and it will probably always be tannic. (1893 views)
Tasted by amc on 3/17/2018 & rated 89 points: I have had several bottles of this vintage over the last several years. Opened one last week and drank without decanting or waiting for it to open up. The fruit was a bit flat, acidity and tannins balanced - it seemed to open up on the last glass. We enjoyed it but not as much as ones drunk earlier. This bottle might have opened more with time; suggestion - if it tastes a bit flat or tired, try leaving for an hour to open. (1966 views)
Tasted by srshane on 2/1/2018 & rated 88 points: Getting tired. Drink up (2029 views)
Tasted by srshane on 1/19/2018 & rated 91 points: This wine was much better after vacuuming the air out and letting it set overnight. Much smoother and more balanced. (1469 views)
Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 12/7/2017: quite a pale red colour, showing its age
SMells of stewed fruit and herbs,
then on the palate it's very very tanninc, hard work at the moment
Needs decanting and some serious food
It will keep but it's going to take years for those tannins to fade and the fruit already isn't that fresh. (2056 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 11/5/2017 & rated 89 points: Dark bright red; slightly lean nose with some licorice; nice somewhat neutral attack, then some deep fruity tones with some acidity, quite tannic / dry ending; overall likeable and fine primarily due to the rich and ripe middel part, but is it over the top? - or in a in-between phase? (1702 views)
Tasted by AV2012 on 10/4/2017 flawed bottle: Herbs and spices, fresh w high acidity. There's also cherries and tomato paste. It feels a bit fizzy, natural wine feel to it. Somewhat dirty, something off with this bottle. Taste also of burnt spices. (1227 views)

Domaine de Trévallon

Producer Website
Up until 1993 the Trevallon Rouge was Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence, Les Baux. However, starting in 1994 this was 'declassified' when the AOC Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence was revised (in 1993) and the maximum amount of Cabernet Sauvignon was reduced to a measly 20% (it was to be complemented with Grenache). Eloï Dürrbach did not want to give in and decided to market his wines under the Vin de Pays des Bouches-du-Rhône.

Syrah Blend

The 2018 is 40% Merlot and 60% Syrah.
