Tasted by galewskj on 3/22/2024 & rated 93 points: Guys night - course meal (Kevin and Vicki's house): Drank a small glass over 45 minutes. Not that different from a bottle 8 years ago, and its quite impressive that Suduiraut pulled this off in 2006. Relatively sweet and rich, but there is a lot of spicy botrytis here. It strays from a GREAT Sauternes by being a touch lacking in complexity and attack, but man, still quite pleasurable. (463 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 3/14/2024 & rated 93 points: Guy's Night: Variety Pack (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Medium gold color. Drank a glass from 375ml over 30 minutes. Orange creamsicle, tangerine, spice, balanced, honey, bright, vigorous with intensity and energy. Very easy drinking. 93+pts or maybe better. (526 views)
Tasted by Keezam on 2/10/2024 & rated 93 points: Lovely Sauternes in a great place at 18yrs of age. Everything you could want (476 views)
Tasted by remyworldpeace on 7/4/2023 & rated 90 points: Orange peel, almond, honey, apricot. Touch of lemon and red grapefruit acidity. Overally slightly lacking in complexity and acidic balance to be a great Sauternes. (1150 views)
Tasted by salil on 4/25/2023 & rated 92 points: Very pretty, a lighter expression of Sauternes with honey and botrytis spice framing bright citrus and tropical fruit flavours. The botrytis is here in spades though it never feels heavy thanks to surprising acidity here. Lovely wine that (unsurprisingly) paired very well with canelés for dessert. (1470 views)
Tasted by winot on 1/11/2023 & rated 92 points: Deep orange gold with clear rim. Gorgeous marmalade nose. Palate is flan, sweet roasted fruit. Delicious. Enough acidity to keep it on track. (1269 views)
Tasted by Grenik on 4/11/2022 & rated 94 points: I love how this is developing. Rich and heavy, but there is a good acidity to the wine that carries the experience through to a very long and lingering finish. Classic profile with honey, apricot, sweet lemon, pear. A nice floral note on the nose and a little cooking spice (clove?, nutmeg?) in the transition to the finish. Very rewarding and I think I should drink more if these. A couple bottles left and I think they will last another decade. But really, why wait? (2252 views)
Tasted by NiklasT on 7/27/2021 & rated 93 points: Very smooth now, saffron and caramelized citrus. In its first maturity phase with everything integrated and seamless. Wonderful! (2412 views)
Tasted by Papies on 4/2/2021 & rated 92 points: Friday Night at The Papies (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Golden bright and still on the youthful side of Sauternes and really bright and delicious.
Soft honey, light waxy palate, soft sweet lemon, apricots and just drinks seamlessly. Great and always come back from trying these wines asking “ why are we not drinking more of them?” Easy 92-93 (2579 views)
Tasted by maaike2 on 4/26/2020 & rated 93 points: Rich, apricot, tropical fruit, not heavy, touch of bitter, good length. A beautiful Sauternes. (2734 views)
Tasted by bboard on 1/5/2019: Tasted along with 375ml of 1982 & 2015 . No detail notes. 2006 (750ml) is the most versatile, only a bit of boytris, good acidity, slight caramel, med intensity, orange peel (3129 views)
Tasted by Hazeo on 7/29/2018: Similar to Rezy13's note, nice with good sweetness and acidity. But did not think it was as expressive as my last bottle. NR (3425 views)
Tasted by wineforth on 2/25/2018 & rated 94 points: A 750cl bottle from Paul (who likes this so much he’s bought a second case). Dark for a Suduiraut. Strong botrytis hazelnut nose which fades and leaves candied orange peel with a welcome touch of bitterness. Complex palate includes apricot. Good acidity and length of finish. Bigger and darker than usual I would have guessed Rieussec if served blind. Still a lovely slightly underrated wine which will age for decades. The ‘83 was excellent last year. (3665 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 1/1/2018: 2018 New Years Day Tasting (Marietta, GA): Peach preserves, vanilla cream, sticky with strong acid. (3334 views)
Tasted by maaike2 on 10/1/2017 & rated 93 points: Orange colour. Tropical fruit, oranges, sweet and acids, vivid, good length. Now great, I do not expect great aging potential, too little acids. (3284 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/22/2017 & rated 91 points: Dîner After Talich Quartet Concert and Mugneret-Gibourg/ Montille Masterclass (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): Fresh and dried apricot with marzipan and candied orange rind. Very good flavors, but it didn't seem to have the energy on finish I tend to enjoy from great Sauternes. (3763 views)
Tasted by physicsfan3.14@gmail.com on 10/22/2016 & rated 93 points: Complex, golden wine with a strong nose of orange peel and baking spice. Smooth and delicious on the palate, with a nice long finish. This is delicious. (3572 views)
Tasted by Lupodesmo4 on 10/15/2016 & rated 93 points: From a half bottle.Golden color, fine nose of apricots, almonds and vanilla, medium bodied, nice balance of sweetness and acidity, medium aftertaste. Will develope nicely in the next ten years. (3275 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 5/25/2016 & rated 94 points: Luscious, rich, textures, sweet, ripe over ripe tropical fruits with an orange rind, tangerine and yellow peach accent all coated with vanilla bean honey. Not the most powerful or concentrated vintage, yet the elegance works with the balance of sweetness and acidity. (4423 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 2/25/2016 & rated 93 points: Out with Charles (St. Genevieve): Bought this 375 for cheap and didn't expect much in an off-year. Wow, this Sauternes delivered. It is relatively sweet and rich, but there is a lot of spicy botrytis here. It strays from a GREAT Sauternes by being a touch thin in complexity and attack, but man, still quite pleasurable. Suduiraut and Rieussec seem to have stepped up their game in 2005+. (4055 views)
Tasted by StefanAkiko on 7/6/2015 & rated 92 points: An intoxicating nose, that would make Ulysses' sirens green with envy. Palate is a little weak with acids underwhelming the lush sweetness. As this wine matures over time, it will certainly become more exciting. However, it will never be among Suduiraut's finer achievements.

One more btl to go, end of 2020'ies. (4410 views)
Tasted by jonathanwilliam on 7/5/2015 & rated 91 points: Greenish hue, rich wine, full feeling in the mouth. Rich and mature with a lovely toffee finish. (3300 views)
Tasted by robertgf on 4/3/2015 & rated 93 points: "I'm Bored" pot luck lunch at Kevin's 4/1/15. Rich golden color. Sweet Honetsuckle nose with a “sliver” of fusil. Honetsuckle / peaches apparent on palate. Sweetness balanced beautifully with acidity preventing even a suggestion of a cloyingly sweet wine. Long finish. Wonderful even at young age. (Definitly not an April Fools Joke by Gary.) (3635 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 4/1/2015 & rated 93 points: A Wild Wednesday (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): REally pretty medium deep gold color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over an hour. Oh my was this in a good place. Just tickles the olfactory senses and sets off a cavalcade of delectable aromas and flavors. The nose is complex with pineapple, apricot, peach cobbler, honey, and honeysuckle. The palate is so well balanced showing crisp acidity and freshness of fruit that is just the right amount of sweet, pineapple, orange, apricot, honey, vanilla creamsicle, mildly spiced, lifted finish. Delicious. Clearly WOTN. 93+pts. (3716 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 2/27/2015 & rated 93 points: Really nice wine here, but lacking the concentration and lush character found in the best vintages. Still, there is ample layers of honey coated apricots, orange, pineapple, vanilla bean and floral scents to get you going. The sweet, fresh, luscious, spicy, honeyed finish is a treat. This will only get better with time. (3337 views)

Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes Bordeaux France

Just down the road from Yquem, is the large, beautiful estate of Suduiraut, 40 km from Bordeaux. On the left bank of the Garonne, Comte Blaise de Suduiraut built the this noble and aesthetically brilliant Château that is replete with stunning gardens designed by the very famous Le Nôtre. Suduiraut is one of the great wines of Sauternes, reknowned for their aromatic complexity and wealth of exotic flavours. The Château’s privileged sandy soils are well-drained and layered with gravel. In September misty mornings are followed by warm afternoons that allow for the development of botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. This in turn delivers the rich and distinctive taste of sweet but balanced wines kissed by honey and marked by lively acidity and opulent textures.

Christian Seely is the managing director of Château Suduiraut. He and his outstanding team are dedicated to the complete success of the Château. Their experience of assemblages of Sémillon (90 %) and Sauvignon (10 %) offer a full-bodied wine of a beautiful gold colour with amber tinges. The wine lies in wooden barrels for 18-24 months. This Sauternes displays harmony, power and marked complexity.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

Le Grand Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac 1855 (Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac) - Read more about Sauternes, Barsac and its wines
– Read more about the 1855 Sauternes Barsac Classification

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
