 Tasted by RC1967 on 3/13/2019 & rated 85 points: I made the error of not letting this breathe long enough before pouring and drinking my 1st glass. I basically opened and poured which was not ideal as the wine was closed, too earthy and bitter.

After an hour it started to open up and then matched with a scotch fillet it came into its own.

The wine looks brick coloured. The legs are fast. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It smells like mushroom, forest floor, espresso, coffee and cedar.

The body is full bodied. The wine has leathery but smooth texture. The wine finishes medium length. The wine has low acidity.

Drink now because it is not going to get any better. (1402 views)

 Tasted by Dr. David K on 8/28/2011 & rated 91 points: This is a tricky tasting note, since it is the first ever for a wine coming from a "VRAC", in this case a 2 liter plastic "wineskin" in a cardboard box with a faucet (the ones that usually just come with bad, cheapo liquids supposed to be wines). Rollan de By started doing these upon request from Air France, who is their top customer. These vracs now are also available to end consumers. Bought mine today at the Leclerc Supermarket in Lesparre near the château for 32 EUR, which is a 25% saving compared to regular bottle pricing. Very fresh an fruity nose, red berries; red fruit (redcurrant, raspberry), fresh saddle leather, licorice, slight lack of complexity; vivid, lingering tannin, fruit-driven finish; This is weird: I never thought that I could say that about a "vrac", but "this is it". I know Rollan de By pretty well, from visits at the chateau and loads of consumed bottles. In this context, the vrac takes the laurels. The wines is amazingly fresh and pure, maybe due to (a) the lack of influence from a cork and (b) the lack of micro-oxygenation. I would love to taste 2005er and 2009er RdB from a vrac, just to confirm my finding that a vrac is more than just a substitute to a standard bottle. (4847 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

The land with the Médoc appellation links three kinds of Médoc terroirs: Garonne gravel, Pyrenees gravel and soils of clayey limestone. Taking account of the huge area the appellation covers, these terroirs are extremely varied in character. Thanks to this variety of terroirs, the infinite palette of the wines with the Médoc appellation has distinction, roundness and a balanced personality. They may be full bodied with a fine ruby red colour. They should be kept a long time for their many nuances to develop. Others are elegant, subtle, with a fine bouquet, ready to be drunk younger, though this in no way reflects on their exemplary finesse.In order to have the right to the Médoc appellation of controlled origin, red wines must: - come from the peninsula bounded on the east by the Garonne and the Gironde, on the south by Blanquefort Brook, on the west by the Atlantic Ocean but excluding the communes of Carcans and Hourtin, Brach, Salaunes, Lacanau, Le Temple, Le Porge and "land of recent alluvium and sand lying on impermeable subsoils", - satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (170 grammes - 6 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°) base yield (50 hectolitres per hectare).
