Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 272 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by deeppunt on 11/28/2023: In a really lovely place. Tons of tomato leaf and cedar, very silky. Has more time, but great drinking right now. (375 views)
Tasted by cobbpa on 10/9/2023 & rated 88 points: Initial glass was a little disjointed...Cab Franc on the nose & finish, Merlot in the middle. After some air, and a few days later (pumped stopper) it was a bit more integrated. Dried herbs & some pyrazine/celery seed notes on the nose with a bit of dried dark red fruit notes underneath. Med palate weight, touch of plump darker fruit in the mid feels lively, then an integrated finish with great acid & more dried herbs in the finish. Went through some muddled moments but an interesting one to sip. (405 views)
Tasted by NoWineWiz on 5/28/2022 & rated 92 points: Unfortunately, last bottle, and is consistent with previous notes. Tannins are fading. (756 views)
Tasted by j.rosenblatt on 12/18/2021: Surprisingly alive and beautiful. Popped and poured - at first the wine was a little disjointed (tannins were a bit dusty and not well integrated) but with time in the glass the wine came together with beautiful fruit (raspberry, plum), coffee, chocolate, and graphite notes. Overall felt like it was perfectly in the zone - the fruit was still present and wonderful, while still showing some pleasant tertiary components. (981 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 11/19/2021: Has that green cigar box note but in a good way. And then still with some gumption - fruit and tannin on the mid palate. Going strong, amazingly enough. (1221 views)
Tasted by BVal on 10/3/2021 & rated 91 points: Color/App: light/medium ruby core -> diffuse garnet/bricked rim. 6 years on from my last tasting note for this and I'm happy with how this has developed but there's no reason to wait on these any longer. Tobacco, earth, a little leather and a touch of barnyard ascendant now with a little rhubarb and cranberry lurking. Austere palate reminding me how much I've always thought this wine mimics many Bordeaux more than the vast majority of California Meritages. Perhaps it's the homage to Cheval Blanc in Cab Franc/Merlot components (if not name) that helps (67%/33%) though it seems much more Graves than St. Emilion in this vintage. The palate pretty much mirrors the bouquet here, not surprisingly. Medium-length finish that shows a touch of drying tannins. Need to drink that last bottle of mine within the year. (895 views)
Tasted by tomandlu on 8/27/2020 & rated 93 points: Popped and poured. Virtually opaque garnet-red in the glass, also a bit cloudy. The nose, from the start, was an almost searingly intense mix of cocoa, tobacco, tar, plums, allspice, coffee, and iron. The intensity subsided after about 30 minutes but the complexity did not, in fact other aromas like cinnamon and peat came in too. The wine was quite silky on the palate with all of the tannins resolved yet with plenty of fruit still present. The depth and persistence on the palate didn't quite match the nose, though. I am stunned that this wine has remained this intense and cannot imagine it getting better. Purchased on release and stored in my cellar since. (1105 views)
Tasted by NoWineWiz on 8/15/2020 & rated 93 points: This just keeps on going. Similar to 2012/2016 notes, just silkier! (900 views)
Tasted by MarkandBetty on 3/28/2020: It is good with steak or other heavy meat. It needs decanting to bring out the best flavor (886 views)
Tasted by msny98 on 11/27/2019 & rated 91 points: Opened at the restaurant with my wine group. Drank really well, no flaws. Still kicking but way more mature that my last note (9 years will do that). Nice old world balance for a new world wine. (1170 views)
Tasted by tomandlu on 5/25/2019 & rated 94 points: Popped and poured and consumed over three hours. Deep, virtually opaque red-garnet color with little fading at the rim. Nose somewhat reticent at first but eventually blossomed into a dense, intense blend of earth, Asian spices, oak, and deep red fruits. Wonderfully rich and mouth-filling on the palate with loads of fruit, some lingering tannins, and lovely balancing acidity all creating a very harmonious and succulent wine that was never jammy. Long finish of coffee and tobacco. (1522 views)
Tasted by Ellenkf on 4/3/2019 & rated 90 points: Highly aromatic -baked cherries, ripe blackberries, cassis. Grip of tannins, graphite, and dried herbs dominate the palate, all enrobed in creamy rich oak. The fruit is concentrated but not sweet. Regal. (1368 views)
Tasted by BURGHen Boy on 12/25/2018 flawed bottle: Cork looked to be intact. VA bitter on finish. Brett perhaps but no other barnyard present. Just off, could not drink (1488 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 11/11/2018 & rated 88 points: Very nicely matured with exqusite aromas of old cabernet, but the fruit on the paalte is not quite ripe, yet well aged and mature. Acid minus. Overal well made wine. Don't keep anymore, it is staeting to fade. (1451 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 8/3/2018 & rated 89 points: oicey with some oxidized bouquet that would disappear after 1 hour of decanting. Balanced with focused flavor but medium to short on finish. Still enjoyable and had delicious factor. (1608 views)
Tasted by Rich S on 5/20/2018 & rated 92 points: Decanted for sediment. Crimson color, slightly fading toward the rim. Nose of roasted black plum, black cherry, slightly stewed fruit, earthy top soil, wet leaves, a bit of pyrazine and tobacco. Very complex mature nose. Similar flavors on the palate showing a mix of earthy and savoury with dark red and black fruits and some sweet oak on the back end. Medium acid and tannin, mostly fully resolved. Medium length finish. Very enjoyable and an oustanding QPR. I would say 1-2 years max before this starts to fade. (1645 views)
Tasted by tgatesman on 4/28/2018 & rated 92 points: Great pepper and earthy flavors (1598 views)
Tasted by Cabfrancophile on 1/19/2018 & rated 90 points: Last bottle. Ready to go on the PnP. Nose is primarily olives with ripe black raspberries. Classy texture, round mid-palate. Very much on the dark chocolate vein on the finish--toasty, high quality oak I'd surmise. Well-balanced and will keep going, but I think this has peaked and is on a plateau. I like the olive profile, for example, though it does seem less complex and more hitting its equilibrium. (1643 views)
Tasted by mwneil on 12/9/2017 & rated 86 points: Started out funky but opened up a bit, lighter than I imagined, earthy fruit, nothing special, won’t find again, drank with grilled rack of lamb.
After reading my prior note and other recent notesI think that this bottle was probably beyond it life or else my taste is wacky from bottle to bottle or lack of bottle consistency. Oh well. (1687 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 9/29/2017 & rated 94 points: Same impressions as I posted on 5/9/17. I wish I had cases of this in my cellar!! (1652 views)
Tasted by df1962 on 7/28/2017 & rated 93 points: PnD let air for 2hrs. Consistent with previous notes. Sad to see the last one go. Has evolved beautifully and drinking really well at this point. Way better than the HdV Belle Cousine. (1916 views)
Tasted by Grape_ape on 6/20/2017 flawed bottle: corked. disappointing as it was my last bottle. (2294 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 5/9/2017 & rated 94 points: 3-1/2 years since last bottle review. This has improved (or my memory is flawed). The nose of cedar/pencil shavings/bright, bold berries/floral notes, and a little barnyard at P&P was captivating enough to wish for it to be canned in an aerosol container for longer enjoyment. On the palate, it was perfection! Soft tannins, bold fresh fruit, velvet in the mouth. with a loooong finish. This bottle lasted for 90+ minutes with 4 drinking it. I wish the other 3 had been real wine lovers rather than just wine "liking" drinkers. I am tempted to look for more which has been kept as i have kept mine for 7 years. (2219 views)
Tasted by z_willus_d on 2/8/2017 & rated 95 points: I slid this out from the heart of a workhorse V266 Eurocave where it had been tightly nestled and well cared for the past seven years. It poured cold, but that didn't temper the incredible bouquet it threw off of violets and cranberries, Cab Franc "Bell" con pencil shaving and barnyard manure. On the palate this was incredibly poised, daintily mouth-coating, yet popping with mineral laden, flavor-packed power minus any noticeable heat. This has evolved, and it's in a great place right now. The balance it holds means that it will continue to age with dignity, perhaps growing more beautiful and layered. Think about things like semi-sour raspberries and cream. The fruit in the finish seems only slightly truncated for all its preceding impressiveness, then after a few breaths it rips back with bitter, smooth and almost creamy tannin -- the type that doesn't feel at all off-putting. I don't often look to Napa for anything for me, but drinking a wine like this reveals the sheer quality that might come out of the region under the right stewardship. What an exciting wine.  Tasted by tomandlu on 2/5/2017 & rated 94 points: Popped and poured and consumed over 2 hours. Completely opaque purple-garnet color. Intensely earthy, loamy, spicy nose that just hung in the glass. On the palate the wine had a richness and savoriness that were quite revelatory, balance and power went hand-in-hand with complexity and elegance. It's the richness that I keep returning too, and this wonderful palate-coating fullness without any heat. A wonderful wine! (2472 views)

(Havens Bourriquot) #1; COLOR-dark; NOSE-just gorgeous red fruit components (cranberry & rhubarb); and then some creamy vanilla & cedar; PALATE-a big wine with lots of flavor; this wine is so delicious and drinks like a $75-$100 wine; like a Right Bank Bordeaux (67% Cab Franc, 33% Merlot); a very young wine; getting tannins on the mid-palate; subtle rose petal meets grenache chocolate soufflé on the attack that is then overwhelmed by the bitterness on the back-end because this is a big young wine; a beast of a wine; big structure and big tannins, but the tannins are bitter and tight, but still quite sweet; this should really develop over the next 3-7 years and will easily last 12-15 years; I like the chocolate and sour red strawberries on the back-end; very nuanced for me; I love this wine and think it's spectacular; RP-92; ST-90/93; GV-92/93  92-93 points

Havens Wine Cellars

Producer website

The original Havens winery was liquidated in 2009. Many of the wine assets were sold with some being released by Cameron Hughes. In 2012, the physical winery itself was acquired and the brand revived.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
