Community Tasting Notes (average 92.6 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 51 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bon vivant on 3/2/2023 & rated 94 points: From a perfectly stored bottle tucked away on release. Quick decant for sediment. Rumors of a decline are greatly exaggerated, as this is the wheel house and showed beautiful aromatics and flavors of mostly blue fruit with supple yet rich mouth feel. Clean and no funk from the get go. No decline on day 2. Glad I waited. Score probably conservative. (509 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 11/6/2019: We opened a bottle of this earlier this year and it was drinking quite well. Though this bottle still tasted fine, the nose was a bit funky. Oh well, it can happen on a 14 year old Sonoma Syrah... (1541 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 3/1/2019 & rated 92 points: Deep fruit in the nose and flavor, blackberries and blueberries, along with some floral and pepper. Medium to long finish. (1633 views)
 Tasted by dmitchell4 on 1/9/2018 & rated 93 points: Ready (2035 views)
Tasted by Matt Scott on 11/29/2015 & rated 94 points: Porcini mushroom, roasted walnut, elderberry, cappuccino, rusty iron and ramen. Long, and not intimidated, this has no heat and prudent concentration. Excellent provenance (I purchased this upon release) and weaves a wild tale. Drink now - 2019. (3340 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 8/29/2015: Book Club (Patty's Place): Blind. Guessed Grenache. Heat all around here. Dark fruit, Anise, pepper, and stems. It's a nice wine but was outclassed by the lineup. (3277 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 8/28/2015: Served blind. Has some big quality to it, so I was thinking riper year. Black raz, jammy-like, with iron, plum, dark edges and some char. My guess was Zin, and I have found with Mike's wines in the mid-decade (2004 and 2005) that the syrahs with age become siblings in flavor to that of Zinfandel. The Bennett Valley bottling for me is very much in this same vein for those two vintages. Touch of heat here, too. Not sure there is any good reason to age this anymore, as if you want syrah qualities, some still remain here but the fruit is already shading over the nuance so would say drink now. (3152 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 8/24/2015 & rated 93 points: Dark crimson in color. 15.2% ABV. Super nose of black fruits, olives, pepper and grilled meats. Medium body with medium acidity. Silky, rich and scrumptious on the palate. Flavors of blackberry, licorice and blueberry liqueur. Great finish with light but noticeable tannins. Aging gloriously. Drink over the next 1-3 years. (2626 views)
Tasted by plambert12 on 4/25/2015 & rated 95 points: Fantastic wine - slight hint of spices and big fruit. Compared nicely with two cabernets of distinguished character. Another excellent wine. (2453 views)
Tasted by tbone on 2/22/2015: Matured to perfection - all tannins have melted, very round and voluptious. Very delicious. (1744 views)
Tasted by bound4er on 9/20/2014 & rated 93 points: Incredible wine - nose of sweet cherry, pepper and a hint of graphite. Palate displays dark cherry, smoky tar, licorice and nicely integrated tannins. Zippy, slightly acidic lingering finish seals the deal. Carlisle's 2005 syrahs are drinking great right now. (1873 views)
Tasted by Bob & Sue Atlanta on 12/15/2013 & rated 95 points: Just awesome. Balance, power & integrity. May be the best Carlisle Iv'e had - which is saying a lot. This wine is still has decent tannins - you could hold on to this for a few more years. (2697 views)
Tasted by kurishin on 6/29/2013 & rated 92 points: Excellent balance, very slightly tannic. I don't think this wine is going to develop much more. Fruit, some acidity, oak has been integrated. (2605 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 4/13/2013 & rated 92 points: NIce wine. Good nose, lots of fruit. good finish. Very pleasant (not sure a precursor of a wine of the year status) (2651 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 11/25/2012: Drinking well right now. Deep lush color and integrated fruit. Lingering finish. (2880 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 9/14/2012 & rated 91 points: Dark color. Plenty youthful. There's a meat/beef theme to go along with a dose of dark fruit. Interesting and fun to drink with seemingly some years to go. (2710 views)
Tasted by zheem on 8/15/2012: on a hot backpacking trip, was delicious with strong chocolate notes. (2522 views)
Tasted by bubbachumps on 4/6/2012 & rated 93 points: For my taste, in a perfect drinking window, enough ripe fruit to be on the young side but not over bearing. Plush and soft on the palate with enough structure to create a nice finish without feeling fat. Complex nose of tree bark, licorice, iron, blackberry and earth. In the mouth some spice and a very invinting finish. An absolute pleasure to drink! (2835 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 9/20/2011: Opened and enjoyed after about 45 mins. I called the wine leaner in my last note but this time, it's a bit more fuller in texture but what comes through now is the old world notes--olive, spice and some game. The stem inclusion really seasons the wine. I can taste the blue and black fruit in the core....I left the bottle overnight, as is my custom, retrying today with some bbq pulled chicken and baguette. There is a saturating feel to the palate of this wine, along with an intensity that carries through it. That saturation is clearly different from my last tasting note a year ago and while I enjoyed the leaner perception then, I like the wine better now as it works for this food and for what I wanted the last two nights, which was color, intensity and darker flavors. Listed alcohol of 15.2%, I don't perceive it to be poking out anywhere. So, in the end, putting the stem inclusion signature along with the palate I described, this is a bold wine, a damn good Carlisle. As for time left to age, I guess depends on what you want. I personally don't find a lot of acid in the wine at this stage but the stem notes do lift the wine's fruit up quite a bit so I'd say drink now through 2014. I like my wines younger and more fruit centric so take my window within that context. (2994 views)
Tasted by ravbik on 9/6/2011 & rated 94 points: Wonderful depth, silky, big body black and blueberries, pepper, juniper, tar, leather. Love this wine. Great qpr (2527 views)
Tasted by cookie7 on 8/23/2011 & rated 93 points: Note after 3.5 hours in the decanter. Inky dark in color. Brambly nose of blackberries and black licorice. Crushed rocks, intense flavors of black fruits with a long finish. If midnight could be drank this is what it would taste like. Drinking well now, but could age for a few more years. (2484 views)
Tasted by SUN-J on 3/7/2011 & rated 93 points: Probably best Carlisle I've ever had -- certainly shows that one needs to wait with these wines. Decanted 45-60 minutes. Aromas of dark fruits, pepper and tar. An Alban-esque like palate in terms of ripeness but doesn't have the same funk. Palate followed nose and was in nice balance. Well done.

A perfect wine for Papa's birthday. :) (2871 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 10/30/2010 & rated 94 points: My first of four. This wine is drinking well now but IMHO will continue to improve. I am writing this note on the second day. No rush to drink this puppy. The wine is inky purple with no cloudiness. Nose of dark fruit, earth, and spice. Flavor profile is concentrated with plenty of soft tannin and dark fruit. Excellent balance and long finish. Yum. (3084 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 10/23/2010: Saxum Vs. The Field (2005 Vintage) + 2008 Copain Syrahs + Burgs (The Murray Casa): This was bottle #6 in the flight of 11, so pretty much dead middle and in my notes, I wrote down that this was the first wine after the preceding 5 to show a relief in ripeness level. Leaner, more earthy, has a cool unique sense that I had a hard time describing. Had nice balance and it didn't have the blockbuster finish, which showed more chalk and grip. This wine came from my cellar and was my pick for The Field to go against the Saxums. I have one of these left, will hold for another 2 years, as I think it will improve further. (3960 views)
Tasted by WetRock on 10/23/2010: Saxum vs The Field + Some New Copains...and then some (Frank Murray's Casa): Served blind. Primary, pillowy nose. Big and rich but not heavy. Even. There is a touch of tar/rubber and the fruit is forward. This was pretty good for a big wine as it didn't go out of balance. I guessed a SQN was snuck in as a ringer as the soft even character made me reminisce that way. (3849 views)

Winemaker's Tasting Note for 2005 Carlisle Papa's Block Syrah

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
