Community Tasting Notes (average 87.5 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 24 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by MCrawford on 3/22/2010 & rated 88 points: Pleasantly surprised at how well this wine has held up. I opened it thinking it would come across as flat, flabby and past its prime. Not true in my opinion. Still Clean and crisp, nice lemon and grapefruit in the nose and across the palate. As it warmed in the glass, I could find some of the mineral tones. Last bottle I had, but most enjoyable. (1779 views)
Tasted by wolfen18 on 9/7/2009 & rated 80 points: Flat with no real taste. yech! (1980 views)
Tasted by curtispomeroy on 3/1/2009 & rated 87 points: Not quite as good as last time. Probably pushed this vintage a little too far. (2003 views)
Tasted by ewisor on 12/22/2008 & rated 87 points: Oregon does Pinot Gris so well! (2115 views)
Tasted by curtispomeroy on 11/14/2008 & rated 88 points: The steady Eddy comes through again as a good pairing with cod. (2064 views)
Tasted by OregonWineGeeks on 11/11/2008 & rated 91 points: This wine in the glass is a light straw colored with a slightly golden tinge. The nose light , melon, apple and pear it leads you to believe that a very sweet wine is to come. Your sip is rewarded with a flash of sweet fruit with a solid middle mineral structure to a nice acidic tart finish. 91 (1355 views)
Tasted by curtispomeroy on 10/9/2008 & rated 89 points: Another very enjoyable wine. This has quickly become our go-to wine when having fish like cod. (930 views)
Tasted by cgrimes on 8/1/2008: Similar to previous notes. Nice. (947 views)
Tasted by jjlobi on 6/4/2008 & rated 87 points: This is a nice wine, nothing really remarkable. There are less expensive options that are just as satisfying. (1055 views)
Tasted by curtispomeroy on 4/23/2008 & rated 89 points: Same notes as last bottle. Will need to restock. (1292 views)
Tasted by curtispomeroy on 4/15/2008 & rated 89 points: Very enjoyable wine. Even the wife, who is not a big fan of whites, thought it was really refreshing and tasty. (1304 views)
Tasted by Squirreljam on 4/2/2008 & rated 87 points: Tale of two cities... On the nose, restrained fruit, touch of earth - in other words, "old world". The palate however is rich and buttery with an easily detectable sweetness that feels completely new world. There's a mineral note on the finish and the acidity is there so it's a good wine, just the mouthfeel threw me. (1894 views)
Tasted by armchairsommelier on 2/25/2008 & rated 89 points: Peach and nectarine on the nose - very bright and tropical. Immediate flavor of grapefruit with zingy acidity. Lingering finish of fresh pears. I'd definitely purchase again. Salud! (1296 views)
Tasted by cgrimes on 12/20/2007 & rated 88 points: Sunriver 2007. Pale yellow color. Floral, fruity nose. Palate of pears, apricots, flowers with some minerality and acidity to make this wine clean and crisp. Very enjoyable everyday wine. (1394 views)
Tasted by jfp on 11/30/2007 & rated 90 points: Immediately likable. Ripe lush pears and peaches on the nose with a hint of grapefruit that really comes to the fore on tasting. As it warms, some subtle pineapple and kiwi come around, along with a nice chalky minerality. Body is surprisingly full and the acidity is clear as a bell and a bit on the puckering side, which makes me immediately think that this will match well with food. Very good. Good QPR. (1415 views)
Tasted by KillerScaryRawr on 10/14/2007 & rated 85 points: Tasted as part of a flight @ KE. Nice pinot gris sweet citrus on nose. tropical fruity, almost too sweet with little acidity, slightly syrupy. Very close to an excellent wine but the sugars masked the otherwise nice balance.

b's notes: good pinot gris, a little sweet (86) (2080 views)
Tasted by GolferChris on 9/22/2007 & rated 86 points: Light, crisp and refreshing. Aromas of flowers, white stone fruit and a hint of spice. Good food wine. (2153 views)
Tasted by MCrawford on 9/3/2007 & rated 88 points: Pale yellow coloring, medium body with a hint of mineral that I didn't get the first time I drank this. Still clean and crisp with plenty of lemon and grapefruit. A party pleaser wine. (1507 views)
Tasted by MCrawford on 7/2/2007 & rated 88 points: Clean, Crisp, melon, lemon, grapefruit. Nice body and finish. (1566 views)

Pinot Gris

From Pinot Gris Wikipedia entry:
Wines made from the Pinot gris vary greatly and are dependent on the region and wine making style they are from. Alsatian Pinot gris are medium to full bodied wines with a rich, somewhat floral bouquet. They tend to be spicy in comparisons with other Pinot gris. While most Pinot gris are meant to be consumed early, Alsatian Pinot gris can age well. German Pinot gris are more full-bodied with a balance of acidity and slight sweetness. In Oregon the wines are medium bodied with a yellow to copper-pink color and aromas of pear, apple, and/or melon. In California, the Pinot gris are more light bodied with a crisp, refreshing taste with some pepper and arugula notes. The Pinot grigio style of Italy is a light-bodied, often lean wine that is light in color with sometimes spritzy flavors that can be crisp and acidic. Although this wine can be very sweet, it will begin to lose its acidity when it is nearly ripe.

Pinot gris is considered an "early to market wine" that can be bottled and out on the market within 4–12 weeks after fermentation.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

Willamette Valley Vintage Reviews

Willamette Valley

Willamette Valley Wineries Association | Willamette Valley AVA Wikipedia article

#2012 vintage:
"Broadly speaking, the Willamette Valley's 2012 pinots are fleshy and fruit-dominated, with round tannins and forward personalities. The fruit tends to the darker side of the pinot spectrum--think cherry and blackberry rather than strawberry and raspberry, much less cranberry and redcurrant--and this gives the wines massive crowd appeal. The best wines also have the depth to age, so don't be fooled by their accessible nature in the early going." - Josh Raynolds

#2013 vintage:
"The key to a successful foray into the ‘13s is first to understand that in most instances the wines lean to the red fruit side of Pinot Noir; they tend to be tangy and tightly wound but often lack concentration. While some wines may put on weight and gain sweetness with bottle age, that’s a gamble I’ll personally leave to others. The 2013s also tend to lack the tannic structure for more than mid-term aging although they will likely endure on their acidity, which I suspect will usually outlast the fruit in this vintage" - Josh Raynolds

#2014 vintage:
"The 2014 vintage in Oregon may be remembered as the vintage of a lifetime [for growers] . . . these wines as they will be similar to the 2009 vintage . . . lovely, ripe, rich, deeply concentrated and aromatic" - winebusiness.com
"The conditions made it relatively easy to make good wines, with no worries about achieving ripeness, and the lack of frost risk allowed us to keep grapes on the vine as long as we wished." - Casey McClellan
