Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 93.2 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 28 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by lightning on 1/1/2024 & rated 93 points: Clear amber in appearance, attractive nose of apricots and butterscotch; still lively on the palate, a touch under medium body with silky texture, apricots on entry and on the midpalate, and a sprightly yet filigreed acid spine. Really well balanced, and moreish, this seems evergreen. (413 views)
Tasted by pemazel on 12/14/2022 & rated 91 points: From the cellar directly into the glasses.
I am afraid it is declining by now (after 63 years). A lot of energy has left by now, making the still honey colored wine subdued and less complex.Still a wonderful experience for my guests (and me) (1183 views)
Tasted by LWI on 5/16/2021 & rated 94 points: Sweeter than expected at this age. Complex, mellow and rounded. Very loing. hazelnuts and caramel, some apricots and just a tine bit of orange peel. (2295 views)
Tasted by VinoVeloVinyl on 6/27/2018 & rated 85 points: Moulin Touchais: A retrospective tasing conducted by Frederik Wilbrenninck and Richard Kelley MW; 6/26/2018-6/27/2018 (The Institute of Masters of Wine, London SW11): Richard Kelley MW: 'The 1959 is supposedly the best vintage since 47 but I prefer the '55 today. It was a big vintage as far as production went. The 1959 was still commercially available until 2006!'

‘Smells like Golden Grahams breakfast cereal’ says Edwina Watson. I found it a bit muted aromatically with traces of burnt oats and apricot.
Terse and shortish flavours in the context of the previous flight (79-64). A bit brassy on the palate which hints at VA. Difficult and odd salty flavours, lacks clarity and depth, lots of acid. None of this is adding up to a stellar score is it?

I took the bottle home to try out again and it stubbornly refused to get better. (5762 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 6/26/2017 & rated 92 points: A private dinner (Scharzhof, Wiltingen, Germany): From Christie's Avery cellar sale in 2016. Deep and rich amber colour, butterscotch nose, big and rich palate, substantial bitters, firm acidity, structured and masculine, long. Not so much tired but very developed. Very different from other bottles I have had before. (5764 views)
Tasted by dvansteenderen on 6/26/2017 & rated 93 points: A private dinner @ Scharzhof. Egon Müller's birth year. Another pristine bottle. More developed than the 1975 today off course, but still so much to like here. A treat! (3532 views)
Tasted by Andrewbdc on 3/17/2017 & rated 93 points: Black Lion Wine Club - Chenin Blanc and Syrah/Shiraz (The Black Lion): Medium gold, with green flashes. Medium (+) intensity aromas of quince, citrus, mushroom, cheese, fruit cake, marzipan, almonds. Fully developed. Medium sweet, high acidity, medium alcohol, medium (+) body, medium (+) flavours, long finish, goes on and on. Amazing balance of acidity, sweetness and fruit, great complexity. Outstanding, drinking beautifully, fully developed so won't improve further but no hurry to drink. (4726 views)
Tasted by vagrantone on 1/28/2017 & rated 91 points: This wine took a little while to open up in the glass and was perhaps served slightly too cold. Great liveliness with the acidity still giving this wine some life. Caramel related aromas starting to move in but still some candied fruit. Time to drink this wine! (3627 views)
Tasted by BradKNYC on 7/2/2016: A small sendoff for Salil as he moves to flyover country and a happy birthday to Jay! (Chelsea Wine Storage.): This producer is a bit maligned amongst my local group of Loireheads and, indeed, their wines can be a bit boring and industrial, but I've always enjoyed the '59 and I brought it since it was Jay's birthday the day before and this is his conception year. There was a lot of this around in the late '90s/early aughts, of varying condition and I purchased this bottle in 2004. Good fill, but I maybe waited a little long. This was much more evolved and less fresh than previous bottles I've had. Lots of caramel here with stone fruits, pear compote and walnuts. It lacks some of the acid zip that other bottles have shown and overall, there's a bit of a dullness about it. I believe I liked it more than others, but it's not what it was. Solid B+. (3845 views)
Tasted by salil on 7/2/2016 & rated 87 points: I thought this was nice though not exciting - ripe and intensely sweet with lots of apricot, quince jam, caramel, and some of that old Chenin wooliness, though it comes across a touch soft on the palate without as much acidity as I'd like. Still very nice, and always a treat to try a Chenin with this much age on it. (3751 views)
Tasted by jkoenen on 11/7/2014 flawed bottle: Corked (4320 views)
Tasted by LWI on 10/29/2014 & rated 94 points: Wonderful clear fruit, some camphor, nuts, very fine acidity, moderate sweetness. Bery long and intense wine, but smooth. (4144 views)
Tasted by godx on 8/30/2014: Quite similar to the '71 but this '59 had more complexity, more development and this beautiful mahogany note. My favourite of the trio. (4365 views)
Tasted by Vintomas on 11/1/2012 & rated 93 points: Moulin Touchais 1959-1985 (AuZone, Stockholm): Appearance: slightly dark golden yellow, similar to the 1971.
Nose: some nuttiness with walnuts and almonds, quite spicy with arrack, some yellow fruit and citrus, some flowery notes, some mushroom. Rather pronounced oxidation notes and some volatile acidity, but not really madeirised in the same way as the 1964 at this tasting.
Palate: good concentration, dried yellow fruit, quite spicy, good nuttiness, quite high acidity, fresh apply aftertaste.
Clearly developed, but fresh, very polished and harmonious. (7369 views)
Tasted by LWI on 9/16/2011 & rated 95 points: Districts and Producers in Spain (My House): Plums, figs, fresh citrus, almonds; in the mouth it is very refreshing, even some complexity. Will last forever. (7116 views)
Tasted by gvdb on 12/27/2009 & rated 93 points: 60 year old anjou dessert wine. Colour gold, first smell a bit milky, however this changed in 15 minutes to orange, citrus, caramel, peacan nuts, apricots and still very fresh with complex flavours. Very long length which stays for a long time with orange, nuts, and citrus. acidity is high and this is not too sweet, so watch out with very sweet desserts. Great wine with very good balance. (8275 views)
Tasted by Burgaddict on 12/25/2009 & rated 92 points: Golden color. Nose not very expressive. Taste is beautifull, balanced and complex. Moderate sweetness (just the right amount), different changing aromas (lemon zest, orange, pineapple, nuts, almonds, caramel) with a lovely acidity. (7841 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 12/9/2009: a real winner. Wooly nose (as often is the case with chenin, for a second I thought this was corked when opened, but actually no trace of TCA), fresh and vibrant, no hint this was 50 years old. Moderate sweetness, zippy acids, ripe pit fruits with citrus zest. Finish goes on and on. Complex, lively, and lovely. A (5592 views)
Tasted by ideliver2 on 11/10/2009 & rated 95 points: Unbelievably intense dessert wine. Quince and applesauce galore.
Finish was incredible...WHAT A WINE! (5838 views)
Tasted by KSC02 on 9/3/2009 & rated 95 points: Light amber in color. Very pleasant complexity of aromas. Apricot, honey and walnuts with a touch of caramel. These carry to the palate in balanced layers that complimented each other. Everything in balanced proportion. Clearly a long life ahead of it. (6177 views)
Tasted by iByron on 8/22/2009 & rated 95 points: Deep amber gold color and a nose of honey, almonds, and some flowers to start. On the palate are complex layers upon layers of peach, fig, baked apple, citrus, honey, and something slightly herbal -- all there but nothing overpowering -- with amazingly firm, palate-cleaning acidity fifty years after harvest and forty after release. Even the cork was firm! Ch. Moulin Touchais guarantees their wine for 100 years and after tonight I have to say they're not bluffing. Paired flawlessly with vanilla bread pudding and roasted peaches. A tarte tatin would be killer. I am honored to have been able to consume this wine. (6777 views)
Tasted by gout on 2/10/2009 & rated 97 points: A rare wine which I purchased in 1980 for £4.99. ( I note a USA wine merchant asking $490 for the same bottle. High neck, gold / amber colour, mature complex nose of apricots, walnuts, exotic fruits; sweet and complex on the palate but with balancing acidity & no sign of being ovr mature. Excellent balance. Will still keep . An extraordinary 50 yr old bottle. (6523 views)
Tasted by jkoenen on 9/13/2008 & rated 96 points: Moulin Touchais Pt. 2 @ Peter Z. (Belgium): Pure acaciahoney on the nose. A subtile and faint hint of beeswax. Intriguing earthy impressions like warm compost, truffles and rain in a waterbarrel. Also notes of shrimp, shells, white chocolate, almond, mandarin.
And, almost unbelievable, the beautiful golden colour still has a glimpse of green in its heart!! Elegance at its finest... A truly humbling experience. 19/20 (4044 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 7/31/2008 & rated 97 points: This is absolutely fabulous! So fresh. So elegant. So complex. Layer after layer appear. The colour; even with a green glow. There is honey, orange peel, tropical fruits, botrytis, caramel and so much more. Beautiful acidity. And all in perfect harmony. Astonishing! A real beauty now, but almost certainly still perfect in 20 years from now. (7259 views)

Moulin Touchais

Producer website (US importer)

Moulin Touchais dates back to 1787, when the Touchais family first managed the wine estate. Eight generations on, it is still family owned and is amongst the most traditional properties in the Loire Valley. The traditional methods of viticulture are still in place; low-yields, careful harvesting and meticulous winemaking. Although they have been built upon and improved over the years.
Moulin Touchais has one hundred and fifty hectares of vineyard, thirty five of which are dedicated to sweet wines of the Chenin Blanc grape. The harvesting strategy is to pick 20% of the grapes under ripe so they are still fresh and high in natural acidity, and 80% are picked late with the grapes yielding high sugar levels and concentrated flavours. This creates the smooth and elegant style of a Moulin Touchais wine. The fermentation process is spread over several weeks, and the wine is bottled early and cellared for a minimum of ten years before leaving under the Moulin Touchais name.
