Tasted by Kentw on 10/17/2020 & rated 90 points: Similar to last note but a touch off comparatively. (388 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 8/3/2020 & rated 91 points: Just as attractive as it was 5 days ago. No noticeable sediment in the shoulder of this and last week's bottle. (389 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 7/26/2020 & rated 91 points: A 91 from P&P. No noticeable barnyard like in 2018. (372 views)
Tasted by Kentw on 6/23/2020 & rated 91 points: Medium body on the light side, with red fruits notes dominating, strawberry, raspberry, and red cherries. Clearly representing the "Rubis" profile. Very smooth at this stage, with mild acidity in mid-palate and on the finish. Similar in character to some aged pinot at this juncture which was a bit of a surprise. Peaking now. Better than the previous bottle drank in 2016. No funk on this bottle. (386 views)
Tasted by Good Stuff on 9/6/2016 & rated 90 points: this is drinking perfectly right now, lighter body, very clean and consistent taste, soft fruit, reminded me of a Sherry without the syrup and high alcohol. (1550 views)
Tasted by Kentw on 7/30/2016 & rated 90 points: Similar to other notes. Medium body, some minor funk at outset but dissipates. Quite easy drinker with more red than black fruit notes at the beginning but finishes with some earthy tones. (1204 views)
Tasted by Sijan on 5/4/2016 & rated 90 points: Drinking well now. Some barnyard funk & tar notes on first opening which blew off after a bit. Good red fruit & garrigue w/ some minerality. Quite enjoyable.

Good QPR - would have guessed this was quite a bit more expensive than the $20/bottle I paid for it in late 2011. (1320 views)
Tasted by ecola on 5/1/2016 & rated 92 points: Drinking great at this stage. Medium body. Earthy aromas and flavors of tobacco and mellow cherry. Herbal and rich finish. Dry tannins. I think this has plateaued, and will be there for at least for a few years. So drink now or over the next few years. (1275 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 12/19/2015 & rated 91 points: At P&P, this was an 89-90 point wine, rather rustic with considerable barnyard. I could see a fair amount of sediment in the shoulder of the bottle so I decanted/strained it thru a Vinturi, rinsed out the debris, and returned it to the bottle about 90 minutes before a blind tasting of blends of 3 or more wines. At the tasting, the barnyard had largely disappeared and the dark red/black fruit was fresh on the nose and palate, alcohol was not at all present, tannin pretty well resolved, and the finish was surprisingly long with some baking spiciness at the end. This wine, among 20+ at the tasting, was completely gone well before the tasting ended. (1405 views)
Tasted by studleytrey on 11/30/2015 & rated 90 points: Pretty close to '13 note, but this bottle (my last) seems like a drink now or soon spot to me. Transparent crimson color with some bricking. Aromas of dark red and black fruits on the dried/aged side, along with soil and potpourri, really jump from the glass. Similar fruit flavors on the palate, with some explosive spice on the finish. Medium body and acidity, and good length. (804 views)
Tasted by SCMeyer on 5/31/2015 & rated 90 points: Nice value here. Opened nicely over the night with bright red and black fruits with typical Rhone accents, but the fruit is the real star here. Nice acidity keeps it light with gripping tannins on the pleasant finish. (839 views)
Tasted by jackaroo on 5/24/2015 & rated 91 points: Last of six bottles and definitely the best. The temptation to drink to soon did me in. All in all, a fine value. (726 views)
Tasted by ctbob on 12/20/2013: Had this alongside the '07, and clearly both of the same ilk, and neither all that remarkable; solid mid-weight red, too much black fruit flavor for my palate, but do not concur with those who say drink now; okay now, but absolutely no rush; drink or hold; will not be buying this maker again -- the best CdPs have a verve and energy in the fruit that stays alive, and this wine doesn't have that; other side of that coin is that the wine is completely drinkable, but at this price point, I want something more (1693 views)
Tasted by studleytrey on 11/16/2013 & rated 89 points: Deep crimson color that's just starting to transition to orange at the edges. Nose kirsch, plum, smoke, tobacco, mushroom, and a little potpourri on the nose. Medium body with good acidity and long finish. Flavors of black raspberry, plum, black cherry, kirsch, tobacco, and an explosion of spice and mineral on the finish. Drinking well now with a 30 min. of air or so. Good value at <$20. (1660 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 6/10/2013 & rated 90 points: My notes pretty much mirror those of Phredd, who last posted re: this CdP 11/02/12. Mine was poured thru a Vinturi and enjoyed as the 3rd opened bottle for dinner. (2139 views)
Tasted by ucbeau on 4/14/2013: Outstanding for $20. Fresh red fruit flavors, think raspberry and cranberry. Lots of peppery spice from the grenache. A wonderfully fun savory note of smoked teriyaki meat ran through the mid palate. The finish was medium length and very pretty. Drinking quite well right now. (2069 views)
Tasted by jpdel on 3/23/2013 & rated 89 points: Red fruits, earthy, a hint of tobacco, fairly mellow tannins. (1978 views)
Tasted by ecola on 3/2/2013 & rated 89 points: Quiet aromas with only a little dried red berry coming out. Medium body with red cherry, cranberry, dry twigs, and dusty earth. Moderate tannins with smooth finish. (1298 views)
Tasted by KyleMittskus on 1/5/2013 & rated 88 points: Decanted 1.5 hours. All red fruits. Nice tannin balance. Not sure it's going to get much better. For the price and compared to CdP prices in general, nice buy. As a stand-alone, ok QPR. Glad I have one more; glad I didn't grab a half case or more. (1161 views)
Tasted by bg3034 on 1/5/2013 & rated 89 points: Decanted 5 hours. Dark ruby color. ON the nose, vanilla, raspberry and a little cherry. On the palate, tart cherry and raspberry, a little leather and anise. Overall, nice balance. Moderate tannins, a somewhat long finish. 89+pts. Aloha! (1306 views)
Tasted by corkscrews on 12/29/2012 & rated 89 points: A nose of earth and funk, needs long decant, dark amber in color. A medium to full bodied Rhone blend with cassis, black cherry, licorice and pepper, a really good value at this price. (916 views)
Tasted by merryberry on 11/23/2012 & rated 91 points: Somewhat translucent burnt magenta. Vanilla, raspberry, spice, and a bit floral on the nose. Medium bodied, bright red fruit, plums, an herbal mid-palate, well integrated tannins, good acid, a touch of tobacco (and heat), and a medium finish. Nicely balanced and a pleasure to drink. (998 views)
Tasted by Phredd on 11/2/2012 & rated 90 points: Dark ruby in the glass, but still slightly translucent, with maybe just the faintest touch of orange at the very rim, the nose on this wine is really nice. There are nice blackberries and rich, red plums, but backed by fennel and anise, with just the barest hint of vanilla cream in the background. The palate shows mellow black raspberry, plum concentrate, and a bit of coffee, and on the mid-palate some nice mushroom and wet forest flavors. There is both darkness and light, very much like aspen bark after a rain storm. There are no edges to this wine - it is round and supple, with a finish that is reasonably long and well-balanced with acidity and just enough slightly grainy tannic structure remaining to give good support without being in the way. The alcohol is understated for CdP, and quite well in balance. This is not profound wine, but shockingly easy to drink. I really like it, and at the $20 purchase price, it is a great QPR. I'm happy to have three more on order. Drink now, but should last another 3-5 years without significant problem. (1021 views)
Tasted by mguglielmo on 8/5/2012 & rated 89 points: 70% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah Rhone blend. PnP. Red burgundy/maroon coloring, though the closed-down nose is somewhat disappointing. I do get faint traces of stewed plums, bubblegum, vanilla, and black pepper. The palate is where this shines though, with loads of ripe, ripe fruit, mostly blackberries, cherry liqueur, blueberry jam, and secondary characteristics of charred meat and espresso. Medium-full body, fat with silky yet grippy tannins, subtle acid, this is nicely balanced. Great now, good for another 5+ years easily. Too bad this is my last one! 5+9+17+8 = 89 (1520 views)
Tasted by Phredd on 7/5/2012 & rated 90 points: Dark but still slightly translucent crimson, the initial nose is bright fruit, but gives way quickly to a substantial amount of funk. After another 30 minutes open, the funk also dissipates, and one is left with a wine that shows nice plum and blackberry, with cinnamon, vanilla, and a bit of violet. On the palate, the wine is well-balanced, with solid but restrained black fruit, with a nice meatiness and a bit of licorice. There is solid structure, but the tannin is mostly resolved. The mouthfeel is far from silky, though, leaving a somewhat grainy or sandy impression. The acidity is medium, and there is still some funk lingering on the palate, but it turns out to be just enough to add depth and interest to the medium-length finish. Overall, this is a very nice and well-balanced wine, even with the less-then-perfect mouthfeel. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is supposed to be quite expensive, but this $20 example is really nice for the price. I really enjoy it. Excellent now, but will likely last for another few years, at least. Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
