Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 71 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by BillBell73 on 2/23/2022: Dark gold, rich, complex, umami-laden, excellent. It's amazing how a good muscadet can transform from a relatively boring quaffer into something as complex as this. All you need is 20 years of patience... (867 views)
Tasted by dsamuel on 4/7/2020 & rated 91 points: Deep brilliant gold color
Medium aromas of green apple with extreme minerality and salinity - also creaminess on the nose presumably from extended lees contact - minimal if any oxidation and remains quite fresh
Medium palate - creamy lees - all rocks/saline with really no fruit evident on the palate
Medium plus acidity with bitterness on the back palate and medium length
Beautiful aged Muscadet and really holding up well (1578 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 9/6/2019: Zestier bottle of this than one a few months ago. Very nice. Continue to love drinking these at this stage. (1938 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 7/15/2019: Nice bottle of this. Continuing to gently age. Still life here with nice broadness on finish as it softens. Showing some nuttier notes. Drink other bottles over 3-4 years. (1893 views)
Tasted by christyler on 1/9/2019 & rated 92 points: From the get-go it’s pretty clear this is in a good place. Beautiful color, nose is full of crushed stone and minerality. Reminds me of a great village level white burg.

Nice weight and acidity on the palate. There’s no fruit here, just tons of minerality on a lightweight frame. (2258 views)
Tasted by dhp. on 1/10/2017: Color was still a light yellow. This is my only bottle of this vintage, so I can't comment on whether it's changed color, but it appeared strikingly youthful; the cork was also in ridiculously good shape with hardly any seepage.

The nose is still fresh, I usually get some nice green apple on the nose in my muscadet, this smelled a little more like baked apple, although it was very subtle. Nice minerality and long finish, but not super complex. It was weighty, almost oily in texture for a muscadet. Very enjoyable. (2501 views)
Tasted by RajivAyyangar on 5/20/2016 & rated 86 points: Geek night with Alex and Tim et al. (The Presidio, SF): (blind - Tim’s 1st wine)
A touch of color indicating varietal, botrytis, or aging.
Neutral nose with some development.
Dry on the palate, with slight bitterness, elevated acid (slightly malic), and a douch of lees. It has a hint of salinity - like Dutch salted liquorice. And it’s quite developed on the palate.

Despite the acid not being so aggressive, this is so light and neutral… maybe Muscadet? (1078 views)
Tasted by VDLT Wine on 2/28/2016: Second Coming of Pig & Khao Extravaganza (Pig and Khao): Excellent, maturing Muscadet that married beautifully with the Thai/Fillipino food. Just as good if not better on day 2. (2951 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 12/26/2015: Post-Christmas Get Together (Mostly Loire Whites and Southern Rhone Reds) (San Francisco): Tasted blind after 2006 Briords, and the best I could do was say Grand Cru white Burgundy or Loire Chenin Blanc-that's how rich and textured this was. Amazing volume and complexity for Muscadet with excellent acidity retained. A wine that makes you sit up and take notice. (2909 views)
Tasted by BillBell73 on 12/21/2015: The best bottle so far of this...medium gold in color, just starting to show oxidation, creamy body, good line of acidity knitting everything together, plays well with seafood...this is why you buy and age muscadet! (2440 views)
Tasted by diggydan on 12/11/2015 & rated 90 points: Subtle nose of white fruit. Round feel with great minerality and citrus. Played well with scallops and clams in a coconut curry sauce. (2162 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 9/5/2015 & rated 91 points: Ye another excellent bottle of this. Beautiful with crab and mussels. A notch less lively than a bottles a year ago. Perhaps sign of gentle decline, or maybe just a quieter bottle. (1594 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 5/31/2015: MuscaDay 2015: Bright, a bit more seashells on this one, still an attractive creaminess, plenty of acid. (2059 views)
Tasted by BillBell73 on 3/21/2015: Medium-light gold in color, not giving much on the nose, decent acidity on the front and back end which drops out in between and creates a somewhat soft middle. Very subtle lemon and cream flavors and a little bruised apple oxidation on the long and beautiful finish. Not spectacular but excellent for the price and very enjoyable with seafood. (1462 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 1/23/2015 & rated 92 points: Another excellent bottle. Fresh, bracing, creamy finish and broad lemon notes. Can't think of another wine that delivers as consistently as this considering the price and style. (1615 views)
Tasted by eluebchow on 1/23/2015 & rated 90 points: Nose was a little reserved although had some hints of lemon and salty minerality; This fleshes out some on the mid-palate and developers a slightly creamier texture, but still with lots of saline flavors underneath it all; Still tasted very young for a 15+ year old Muscadet (1612 views)
Tasted by tooch on 1/22/2015 & rated 90 points: (Mostly) Northern Rhone Night (Browntrout - Chicago, IL): While many 1999s are drinking well right now, there's really no rush. Loved the salty, cool expression in this wine...and if the oysters were better at the restaurant, we would have ordered those. Yum. (1852 views)
Tasted by acyso on 1/22/2015 & rated 88 points: Geeky Syrah Night at Browntrout (Chicago, IL): There was a slight bit of banana on the nose at first. I found that a bit offputting. But that aired out and we were all good. The palate on this bottle was very light from the acidity and mineral qualities, but the rich texture gives this a lot of weight at the same time. Slightly oily texture and a bit sweet, this had a good balance of everything. (1685 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 11/29/2014 & rated 92 points: Superb juice. Zesty lemon on the palate and long creamy finish. In top form today with crab salad. More than held its own against Chablis on the table. (1691 views)
Tasted by Ben H. on 11/8/2014: Still incredibly fresh and far less advanced than a bottle of the 2000 Louvetrie Le Fief du Breil that I drunk in February. Pineapple-y in taste and smell, with a tremendous quinine finish, the wine's minerality hovering in the background rather than jumping out at you. A nice roundness to the texture. (1486 views)
Tasted by gris on 10/16/2014 & rated 94 points: Dark yellow, a bit of candy on the nose with white peaches and a hint of tropical fruits. Rich in palate with a good dose of acidity, but not overly acidic. No oxidation. Very youthful still after 15 years…. extremely well balanced. A big surprise for many who had never had a Muscadet with this much age…..some confused it for a Marsanne (blind-tasting). (1481 views)
Tasted by amateurwino on 9/28/2014: Feels quite youthful for its age - crisp, correct. Not a lot of minerality showing, nor does it have some of the almost riesling-like funky qualities on the nose that I have gotten from some 20+ year old muscadets. Ready to drink but I may hold my remaining bottles to see what they show in the long term. (1455 views)
Tasted by daschaptal on 9/5/2014 & rated 52 points: I am pretty sure this tasted like an 85-15 blend of sauv blanc and saliva. IT was very slightly better after 24 hours of oxidization. (958 views)
Tasted by daschaptal on 9/5/2014 & rated 100 points: oh crap, i rated the wrong chateau. obviously a rookie. not a troll! sorry people, it was another 1999 muscadet i hated. i'm sure this one is ambrosial. (1240 views)
Tasted by WST on 6/7/2014: Hospital Foundation Annual Charity Gala (Bellingham, WA): Wow, this was one of the WOTN's against serious contenders. Lemon, florals, minerals. Not showing much age at this point. (2419 views)

Melon de Bourgogne

Melon de Bourgogne or Melon is a variety of white grape grown primarily in the Loire Valley region of France. It is also grown in North America. It is best known through its use in the white wine Muscadet.

In the U.S., Federal law prevents "Muscadet" from being used for American-produced wine; only the full name of the grape, or the shortened "Melon" can be used.
