Tasted by RobinTeo on 3/30/2024 & rated 98 points: The one with Old Bordeaux (Praelum): The first look at the bouquet immediately put this wine up for wine of the night. Leaping bouquet of dried florals, graphite, dark plums and bayberries before moving on to white pepper, mulberries, red currents, tobacco and dried roses on the palate. This wine is powerful yet soft, brutish yet elegant, brash yet sensual... you get the drift. Great fruit concentration with a good hit of acidity - timeless and an amazing bottle of bordeaux.  Tasted by Dionysos55 on 3/11/2024 & rated 95 points: Décanté 1h30 avant consommation. Tasted by AudunG on 11/18/2023 & rated 95 points: Floral and typical Margaux aromas, with leather, herbs and pencil. Soft, feminine and developed on the palate, still with a lot of punch and concentration. (1833 views)
Tasted by Wine MOB on 7/22/2023 & rated 95 points: Delicious, classic Bordeaux nose of graphite, tobacco, green peppercorns, plums, and red currents. A lush, silliness gives way to a slightly harsh finish. Amazing wine for 38 years old. Still has great life ahead of it.

After three hours, it takes on an exotic smokey jambon character, Rose petals, and candied cherries. Just an amazing Bordeaux. (2707 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 6/28/2023: Missing the Margaux perfume nose for me. Overall very fresh but slightly thin and dry on the palate. Maybe not the best bottle of 85 Margaux. (2919 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 6/8/2023: Wine Workshop: Chateau Margaux (Gabriel Kreuther): Another absolute favorite of the tasting for me and a wine that I have quite enjoyed in the past. It’s again more of that pretty style. Very classic. Light raspberry and fresh and a tasty and with that beauty of an easy well aged wine that is still somewhat light on the feet but has all of the right flavors. Happy to see that we have a few left in our cellar. Quite enjoyable. (3040 views)
Tasted by vetoraph on 5/14/2023: En famille et entre amis.
Toujours bonne.

Que du bonheur (2301 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 4/14/2023 & rated 95 points: Perfumed and generous Margaux aromas with flowers, herbs, leather and pencil. Soft and developed on the palate with great concentration. But as always with the great Margaux wines: the nose is best. (2231 views)
Tasted by Brolawa on 4/3/2023: M2. Drank at Cimarron. Could have been elevation. (1416 views)
Tasted by djhammond on 3/2/2023 & rated 95 points: My second of 2 bottles from auction, this again delivered. Having tasted a few contenders from 1985 recently, I do feel this is probably the wine of the vintage. The nose is glorious and deeply perfumed, but lacking the delicate Margaux floral notes. The Cabernet is dominant on the palate with earth and spice. The finish is its Achille's heel, and is a little unbalanced and over harsh. It is important to decant the wine, and it really only bursts into life after 3 hours in the decanter. However, in spite of the criticism, it is a wonderful wine, and more than worthy of its first growth status in a challenging vintage. (2035 views)
Tasted by vindictive on 2/19/2023: Beautiful wine. Needed 2 hours in the decanter to start to show its depth. 1985 is a great and subtle vintage for Bordeaux and this is a superb example. Always evolving, perfect with a reverse seared steak. So different from modern Bordeaux (1698 views)
Tasted by Raage on 1/19/2023 & rated 93 points: CDV)
(2229 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 12/22/2022 flawed bottle: Dinner with Dad: Aged Napa, Bordeaux & Don Saunders (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Clearly not right, cooked fruit. This was painful. (2384 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 11/19/2022 & rated 93 points: blind, together with Monte Bello 85 and La Landonne 85
I guessed the common ground was the grape variety namely Syrah but I was only one third was correct. For me close to his peak, balanced a bit short for a really "big" wine. Love the roasted aromas. 93-94 (2576 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 10/30/2022 & rated 91 points: Nose of dark fruit, earth and manure. Maybe slightly advanced. Great balance and depth. Just didn’t love the flavor profile. (2115 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 9/4/2022: Always a lovely wine and this was no different. Drinking very well. Dark red fruit and a hint of spice and more cigar smoke. Glad to see we have a few more of these. (2635 views)
Tasted by dkentaustin on 7/24/2022 & rated 93 points: Rust red color. Shoe leather, light oak, mulberry, tart cranberry and a medley of herbaceous notes. Chalky tannins glide across the palate in this light weight wine with brûléed flavors intertwined and a slight hint of dried fruits. After reading other comments, we’ll decant and wait a few hours before enjoying to see where that takes the wine.

p.s. reversed seared grilled veal chops with sauerkraut pierogis and charred broccoli (2481 views)
Tasted by djhammond on 5/8/2022 & rated 96 points: I studied tasting notes from fellow reviewers, and I followed some common advice and decanted this for 3 hours, but it took an hour in the glass to come alive. If it wasn't a Margaux I probably would have been more generous, but it lacked the delicacy and floral characteristics I love in Margaux. I wonder if the 1995 might be similar in 10 years time. That said, it is a magnificent wine, worthy of its first growth status and possibly the wine of the vintage. Light red berry fruits are displayed, but tobacco and spice from the Cabernet are prominent. The nose is mature and worthy of a perfect score. The depth and balance on the palate and finish are impeccable, but residual tannin distracts from the finish. I would assume that there is now bottle variation and on a lucky day this could rate another 2 points. 96+ (2839 views)
Tasted by hajoha on 4/10/2022 & rated 96 points: Chateau Margaux 1985.
Fullstendig herpa label - ofte et godt tegn.😊
Aldri smakt en bra Chateau Margaux - endelig er tiden inne!
En helt fantastisk flaske.
Mørke bær, sigarboks, lær, krydder, tørket frukt og litt sjokolade i blomsterenga.
Silkeføre i anslaget.
96p+ (2611 views)
Tasted by jmoon on 3/27/2022: NR... couldn't get it to fire. may have been too cold? decanted 3 hours, did I miss the window? last bottle 7 years ago was stunning. (2482 views)

Tasted by vinhonotte on 2/21/2022 & rated 90 points: Fine Wines SG - Bordeaux 1985 Grand Cru Discovery Pack (Fine Wines SG): Somewhat pale garnet with browning fading edges. Overtones of mint, herbs, and dried grass on the nose, then dark florals, pepper, a Chinese treebark herbal feel, and there seems to be a black fruited, plummy hint. Flavours seem to be Chinese herbs dominated, then dark florals, underripe blackberry and cassis, and then the nutmeg and pepper spices, and a seemingly tannic tea-like feel. Medium length (1496 views)
Tasted by NewFrenchClaret on 2/4/2022 & rated 97 points: Like every '85 Margaux I have had, this was stunning.

If there's one lesson I've learned about Margaux it's that it always needs far more air than other first growths. On opening it is relatively pedestrian, unlike, say, a Latour which will knock your socks off as soon as the cork pops. True to form, this took at least 2 hours in the decanter to fully open up, but fortunately it was timed perfectly for the arrival of the steak course.

Remarkably fresh and vibrant, consistent with previous notes. Extraordinarily perfumed. An absolute delight. Day two (there was only about a third of the bottle left) was just as good if not slightly better, suggesting this wine is nowhere near beginning a decline. Don't wait though; it is too good now.

The 1983 can be better than this, but it's not as reliable in my experience. This wine always delivers. (2144 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 1/17/2022 flawed bottle: La Tache and Chevalier Montrachet with Brad (Roger Nellans home): Unfortunately quite corked. (2292 views)

Their second wine is Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Margaux

Read more about Margaux and its wines As with a large part of the Bordeaux vineyards, vines first appeared in Margaux during the Gallo-Roman period.
In 1705 a text mentions Château Margaux . But we have to wait for the end of the eighteenth century and the coming of the earliest techniques in aging for the concept of wines of high quality to develop. The confirmation of this was the famous 1855 classification which recognized 21 Crus Classés in the Margaux appellation. One hundred years later, the Viticultural Federation and the Margaux appellation of controlled origin were born. The appellation, which stretches out over five communes, is actually unique in the Médoc in that it is the only one to contain all the range of wines, as rich as they are vast, from First Great Cru Classé to the Fifths, not forgetting its famous Crus Bourgeois and its Crus Artisans.

In Margaux there is a predominance of Garonne gravel on a central plateau of about 4 miles in length and one and a quarter wide. To the east-south-east, it overlooks the low lying land by the estuary. Its east side is marked by gentle, dry valleys and a succession of ridges. The layer of gravel in Margaux was spread out by a former Garonne in the early Quaternary. Rather large in size, it is mingled with shingle of average dimension and represents the finest ensemble of Günz gravel in the Haut-Médoc. It is on this ancient layer on a Tertiary terrace of limestone or clayey marl that the best Médoc crus lie. All the conditions for successful wine are present : a large amount of gravel and pebbles, poor soil which cannot retain water and deep rooted vines.

It is customary to say that Margaux wines are the "most feminine" in the Médoc, thus stressing their delicacy, suppleness and their fruity, elegant aromas. This does not affect their great propensity for aging; just the opposite, for the relatively thin terroir imparts tannins which give them long life. The other characteristic of these wines which combine an elegant vitality, subtlety and consistency, is their diversity and personality. Over and above the flavour which is their "common denominator", they present an exceptional palette of bouquets, fruity flavours which show up differently from one château to another.

Production conditions (Decree dated August 10 1954)
In order to have the right to the Margaux appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Margaux, Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac and Labarde, "excluding the land which by the nature of its soil or because of its situation, is unfit to produce wine of this appellation".
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).

Vins de Bordeaux:
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot
Soil: Gravel and silt plateau on a layer of limestone or silt on clay
Surface Area: 1,530 ha
