Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 26 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Ozmango on 5/6/2024 & rated 93 points: Cork was good in this one, hardly used. Legs, Deep plum red, hints of age. Stewed plums. Cassis of dark berries, blackberries and raspberries come to mind. Tannins have softened to a fine white pepper. Excellent with a good red meat roast. (51 views)
Tasted by Ozmango on 12/29/2023 & rated 92 points: Half cork extracted. Pushed rest into bottle. Very porty esters waft from the glass. Soft fruit once the wine settled. Tannins are now dominant and still drying. Not unpleasant. Lots of bottle variation. (125 views)
Tasted by ajk63 on 4/17/2023: Past it (285 views)
Tasted by Ozmango on 9/4/2022 & rated 93 points: Look back at previous notes, my commentary is very dependent on the cork quality. This one had a excellent cork, hardly used. Plums, stewed. Some raspberry. Fruit now well integrated with oak. Fine tannins, very drying. Alcohol is evident. Still big after 17 years. (387 views)
Tasted by mark_m_owen on 10/22/2021 flawed bottle: Well past I think, or just an off bottle. Very flat and a touch musty. Rest of the case was top class. (823 views)
Tasted by pbu7364@bigpond.net.au on 12/26/2020 & rated 93 points: Boxing Day drinks with a neophyte red drinker and an experienced one . We all enjoyed very much . Complex wine with 5 varietals ( thus the wine name ) and new French oak and mintaro slate open maturation Superb dark color and Easy drinking with balanced tannins, tobacco , spice and blackberry tastes . Highly recommended. (1082 views)
Tasted by Ozmango on 6/16/2020 & rated 93 points: After drinking the 2007 we opened the 2005. Under cork which was not as good as the 2007 one. Still did its job. Dark plum red, lying about it's age. Brandied plums meet the nose. More fruit driven than the 2007. More plums but stewed this time. More mouthfeel. Still good tannins. Succulent. One you can drink alone. (1192 views)
Tasted by Ozmango on 5/16/2020 & rated 93 points: Under cork which crumbled on extraction. This particular bottle has a plumby cabernet overtones making me want to dive in head first. Soft succulent fruit with spice and pepper from the middle palate onwards. It leaves the mouth cleansed, but wanting more. Best bottle yet. Had with a full rack of pork ribs. Well matched.  Tasted by WilliamMP on 11/3/2018 & rated 92 points: Brilliant surprise to kick off an evening of Aussie exploration, with a fellow lover of wines from down under. A black stained cork in perfect condition, the 1st sigh of relief followed closely by a 2nd when i was hit with a wall of fresh fruit...its alive!

Intense, perfumed, pure and elegant. Blueberry, cassis, fresh menthol/herb, faint leather. Med+ grainy tannins and acid hanging strong. Pure blackcurrant, fig tarragon, fusty old leather, earth, ethereal lift.

Fin: Med, leather, faint oak. Classy. (2056 views)
Tasted by bsycheng80hk on 3/5/2018 & rated 90 points: Fruity entry, black fruit, complex, a bit of pepper, soil notes, still some tannin to resolve and high acid, needs food at this stage (2670 views)
Tasted by ohearsey on 3/21/2017 & rated 88 points: Still good tannin at the front and benefitted from decanting and then nice balance. I think this drinks well now and wouldn't be inclined to hold on to it for too long now if you like some fruit still there (3100 views)
Tasted by mark_m_owen on 2/4/2017 & rated 90 points: Must be given air, must be given with some food with fairly strong flavours. Otherwise as per previous TN. No sign of this fading or losing its peak at this point. (2894 views)
Tasted by Ozmango on 1/2/2017 & rated 92 points: Better than the last bottle. The extra time helps. Still meaty. Decanting will be useful in future bottles. (2879 views)
Tasted by Ozmango on 12/31/2015 & rated 90 points: Surprisingly dull on the noise. Almost cooked. Big tannins. I would normally be enamored by this wine. However this bottle is not up to par. Strange as cork was fine (3354 views)
Tasted by Jimskiw on 3/27/2015 & rated 91 points: Needs air - very nice on day 2 (3226 views)
Tasted by mark_m_owen on 3/26/2015 & rated 90 points: Ka-boom. With a bit of finesse. Oodles of fruit but the booze is toned down by a gentle but undoubted "meatiness". Give it time out in the air though, or it's just gloop. (2293 views)
Tasted by Julian B on 2/9/2014 & rated 93 points: Needs a bit of a decant (1hr+) but drinks beautifully. (3303 views)
Tasted by WineChief on 12/4/2013 & rated 95 points: Decanted for 2 hrs. Awesome wine. Full of power and grace. Clare cabernet is such an underrated grape in that region. The other elements all work harmoniously. Quality oak used. Perfect cork. Could go another 5-8 years or longer if the cork allows. Great with herb crusted lamb rack. (3783 views)
Tasted by mark_m_owen on 11/23/2013 & rated 90 points: Not as good as the last bottle. The blend is nice but this time round felt a bit brash - which is down to fruit and alcohol domination. Who'dathunkit,eh. There is a lot of interest here, there is minerality and some freshness but it didn't really start opening up until day 2. No booze burn, just a bit too full on at first. Good for home drinking as it can be given the time, but I wouldn't buy in a restaurant as it would kill most food if popped and poured. (2758 views)
Tasted by mark_m_owen on 2/9/2013 & rated 92 points: Now I've had a few Southern Aussie "bombs" recently of various varietals and blends but this Cab was a refreshing change. Still pretty full-on but there is plenty both on nose and in mouth - black & red fruits, cedar and tobacco (but much muted from a left bank claret for example) and some interesting almost tarry hints. Biggish wine, but not a vulgar one. (2452 views)
Tasted by L Nierop on 1/18/2013 & rated 94 points: A ripe style of Cabernet but still with plenty of freshness and elegance. The nose is ever-changing and most captivating - masses of cassis, spice, tobacco and minerality underscored with a touch of mint. Great length and up there with Australia's big names - Wynns John Riddoch, Henschke Cyril, Mosswood. A bargain at auction via www.bidforwine.co.uk (3384 views)
Tasted by tplskylrk on 3/19/2010: TWATS VIII (Simmy's Pink Palace): Round I. Dark purple. Glycerin, inky, strawberries, red licorice, dusty. JTV – Very niccce. CB says, I like this with a porno face. Sweet nose, berries deep finish, a double swallow, dusty leathered.

II. CB likey likey. Punchy. Young, blue fruit, great mouthfeel, smooth. Andrew says he would cross the road for this one! (3629 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.
