Community Tasting Notes (average 91 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 124 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by kzkpt on 12/24/2023 & rated 92 points: Terrific. Still kicking. Rich, long finish. Sarsaparilla, nutmeg, dark fruits and a great example of the Westside Neighbors bottling. (168 views)
Tasted by M DU VIN on 9/21/2023 & rated 93 points: Great fruit and balanced tannins. IMO it has five or more years of very good drinking. (548 views)
Tasted by kzkpt on 12/5/2022 flawed bottle: corked (633 views)
Tasted by kzkpt on 8/7/2022 & rated 92 points: vermillion slightly bricking. Medium bodied but light on its feet. Initial pop and pour shows balanced but not showy fruit, with notes of spice, sarsaparilla, mushroom earth, with smooth and subdued tannins. It fades to some acid, and to a rather long, 45 second+ finish. Very elegant and definitely ready to drink. Interesting example of the Westside Neighbors bottling, which is quite robust when young, but reveals fine balance as it ages. (866 views)
Tasted by RAMwines on 11/14/2019 & rated 90 points: Last bottle of 2006 West Side Road Neighbors. (1937 views)
Tasted by UpfromtheCellar on 8/30/2019 & rated 90 points: Medium weight, fragrant, still lively with higher toned red fruits and flowers. Not a savory dark fruit & earthy but with enough "stuff" to suggest in its youth it might have been more so. Very nice. (1876 views)
Tasted by UpfromtheCellar on 7/16/2019 & rated 90 points: I think @TOMLEE (previous reviewer) summed it up nicely. Other than the score (I'm a little tougher on that front) we enjoyed this wine. (1798 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 2/16/2019 & rated 91 points: Light red in color. 14.2% ABV. Amazing nose of red and black fruits, cloves, baking spices and sarsaparilla. Light to medium body with just enough acidity. Pretty and elegant. Black cherry, strawberry, cranberry, earth and minerals on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. The bright fruit I expect seems to be fading ever so slightly. Best over the next year or so. (1774 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 5/4/2018: This seems to be in a good drinking zone. Soft, with strawberry and touch of root beer, too. (2327 views)
Tasted by WetRock on 5/3/2018: Dinner at Basanti (Basanti): Sonoma piney, Christmas spiced nose. Juicy and clean with a touch of a grip. Nice and appears to be a good spot. (1738 views)
Tasted by bobdobilina on 1/19/2017 & rated 91 points: Clear dark garnet color

Warm and high toned nose of nose of rose petals and nutmeg

On the palate, rich and sweet red fruit without being heavy or dense. Acid backbone carries the flavor through the long finish. A touch of warmth on the end. Seems very true to the house style under Bob Cabral and a nice example. (2411 views)
Tasted by David B on 11/24/2016 & rated 89 points: This was the most unusual Selyem I've had over the 25 years I've been drinking them. Opened at 12 noon, very tight nose, tart fruit on palate. Not the usual selyem perfume. At 7pm finally started to smooth out and the tartness was gone. Nice selyem perfume of strawberry cola started coming thru. Still very young. I keep these at 53 degrees, I think I'll wait another 10 on others from this vineyard. I have had 20 year old Selyem's that have blown me away. The westside style may need time. I will also skip buying westside, different style than I expect for from Selyem. (2401 views)
Tasted by Rhone Rick on 10/3/2016 & rated 93 points: Jam and acid with a long finish. Wood and red fruit but still going strong. (2360 views)
Tasted by JRfromCT on 2/10/2016 & rated 90 points: Very nice. Still good fruit and acidity. (2643 views)
Tasted by dmitchell4 on 7/24/2015 & rated 90 points: Time to drink up. (3024 views)
Tasted by dmitchell4 on 7/3/2015 & rated 90 points: Nose, fruit all still there (2160 views)
Tasted by lebo9968@gmail.com on 5/31/2015 & rated 84 points: blah. Not sure why. Old? Bottle variation? Bad night for my palate? (2098 views)
Tasted by BMorelli on 2/22/2015 & rated 91 points: Understandably slow to open. Floral on the nose with a real nice berry finish. (2341 views)
Tasted by benjordan on 2/18/2015 flawed bottle: Corked. (2252 views)
Tasted by Mscruggs on 12/6/2014 & rated 90 points: Nice red fruit on the palate but not a very complex finish, almost seemed a little "thin". We opened up a 2006 Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast right and it seemed to overwhelm the WS. (1699 views)
Tasted by grumi62 on 11/12/2014 & rated 89 points: was good but turning brown already, drink up (1762 views)
Tasted by BGK810 on 8/22/2014 & rated 91 points: Raspberry, strawberry, cherry with a but of earth and some pleasant vanilla. Very rich and tasty. (1966 views)
Tasted by affordableCollector on 4/24/2014 & rated 91 points: red, orange, in the color. black cherry, raspberry, earth, spice, mineral, on the nose. light body, high acid, low-medium tannins, on the finish. (1450 views)
Tasted by grapist on 12/5/2013: Didn't give it time to breath and open. (2692 views)
Tasted by Jonathan T on 10/18/2013 & rated 89 points: This a delicate, very elegant pinot noir. Stylistically, it's not going to offend anyone, but probably not wow anyone either. At this price point, I don't mind if the pinot makes a statement and is slightly controversial. The nose and palate are filled with bright red bruits fruits but is not hugely complex. Very soft and silky mouthfeel. It's clearly showing some age, but has not developed any secondary, more earthy qualities. It does have sufficient acidity consistent with the W-S style. I have to say though, that this was a delicious food pairing with a pan-seared roasted salmon. (2615 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
