Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 385 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Cote d'Or on 3/21/2024: Tasted over 1.5 hrs, from 375 mL
-med dark red no bricking
-heady fig spicy fruitcake warm kirsch plum
-med- acidity, big thick unctuous almost syrupy molasses fig plum faint hints of maturity and long burnt caramel somewhat warm finish with med- tannins
-wow, there is a lot there and even in this format still has some years ahead of it, this is one of the few '07 CdPs in my opinion that has lived up to its hype in that it isn't ridiculously hot roasted or grossly imbalanced, while I still prefer cooler vintage old school CdP this is an '07 I can enjoy; really has evolved positively since the last time tasted 7 years ago (294 views)
Tasted by zscheiner on 2/2/2024: Nope, not for me. Alcohol is obtrusive and makes the wine feel thin and hollow on the palate despite plenty of sweet (over)ripe red fruit. Amazing to read the diversity of notes below, I suspect it’s palate rather than bottle variation. The best thing I can say about this wine is that it smelled nice. (397 views)
Tasted by Sanlucar on 1/3/2024 & rated 93 points: I recently had 2 bottles. The first was good (minor fruit & slightly fading) but the second was great (huge black fruit flavors with smoky BBQ and spices). So I averaged to my score of 93. Cost $52 per bottle. Overall value is excellent. (483 views)
Tasted by peter.mancell@mfg.com.au on 11/27/2023 & rated 95 points: Just a glorious rich CNdP! (538 views)
Tasted by jrt on 10/30/2023 & rated 92 points: Enjoyed on a camp out with friends while eating venison bourguignon. Amazing value and drinking youthfully 15 years in. There is a purity and freshness to this wine that makes it almost Burgundian at the cooler temperature at which we were drinking it. Fortunately I have many more bottles to enjoy over the years to come. (586 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 10/23/2023 & rated 94 points: Dark berries, sweet licorice, garrigue in the bouquet and on the palate. Good and fresh acidity and a great length. This was a pristine bottle which was still great on day 2. (907 views)
Tasted by Vaughanwallace on 9/17/2023 & rated 90 points: Big fruit bomb style - bit overblown (474 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 9/16/2023 & rated 89 points: Showing some brett and a little oxidation, esp compared to the Beaucastel '07 and the Vieux Donjon 14. Blind tasting my place (490 views)
Tasted by Sperls on 12/10/2022 & rated 92 points: Yummy and more youthful than expected, rather fruity even. Almost a cherry nose on top of the normal Grenache white pepper and herbs, etc. medium finish. Nice w steak. Feels at its peak now but doesn’t seem like a rush to drink. (1086 views)
Tasted by Sperls on 4/23/2022 & rated 93 points: Excellent mature Grenache with big fruit, nice herbs, some prune and tar and some spice and beautiful nose and medium finish. At a good plateau but probably not getting better. (1612 views)
Tasted by peter.mancell@mfg.com.au on 4/19/2022 & rated 96 points: Glorious texture, mouth coating glycerine like feel, huge dark fruit, smooth as silk and long long finish of sweet dark fruit!!!!
So sad we have no more 🙁 (1520 views)
Tasted by Vaughanwallace on 2/4/2022 & rated 93 points: Rich full bodied Grenache. Slight fruit cake overtones. Drink soon (1649 views)
Tasted by rsbeck on 1/31/2022: Gave three bottles to McKenna. (1612 views)
Tasted by tom_wine on 1/31/2022 & rated 87 points: Bright raspberry and dark cherry flavors, dried herbs and black licorice aromas. Alas, it dies after the initial wave of simple fruit. Not complex at all. It seems more suitable as an aperitif than a wine to pair with food. (1334 views)
Tasted by Magnum PI on 1/16/2022 & rated 93 points: I enjoyed this bottle at The Oven East with the somm, Chad, along with my favorite Indian dinner of malai kofta and soup. I did not decant the bottle and although part of me wishes I had, it was ultimately not necessary. The bottle, initially somewhat tight and reticent, did open over an hour and reveal its potential. It was very interesting, and in my view enjoyable, to experience the evolution, and gave me what I believe to be some insight into the wine's aging potential.

Dark nose, hint of garrigue and raspberry, emerging dark cherry. Chad detected a slight hint of cocoa. The primary notes were mushroom, herbs, earth. Very savory, balanced, fully integrated and mature. Great nose throughout, enough acid, will keep a few more years before decline.

This is the best sub $50 bottle I have ever had. (1422 views)
Tasted by peter.mancell@mfg.com.au on 1/6/2022 & rated 94 points: Very good CMdP indeed! (1205 views)
Tasted by norsktorsk on 11/24/2021: this bottle is off. not TCA. not VINEGAR. NOT SURE. did not drink though let it sit for two days (1131 views)
Tasted by Anna@WineCellar on 11/13/2021 & rated 90 points: Garnet coloured, rather pale. Pleasant, mature, medium intensity nose of mature dried fruit. Dry with a slight alcohol sweetness, medium(+) acidity, medium velvet tannins, medium body. Mature, still a lot of fruit. Raisins woven into complexity. Medium length with a bit sweetness and some heat in the finish. 14,5%, but well surrounded by fruit. Typical C9P with a lasting impression of complexity and elegance.
Holds well day two. (1030 views)
Tasted by Vaughanwallace on 8/29/2021 & rated 93 points: Big fruitcake Grenache style. Drinking well. Full bodied (1406 views)
Tasted by Cow Town on 7/17/2021 & rated 91 points: Amazing what time can do for a wine. Last bottle was four years ago, and its was hot, pruney, and overblown. This bottle? Fresh red Grenache fruit. No heat or alcohol notes to be found. Even seemed a little thin on the first glass, but it opened up and rounded out. (1494 views)
Tasted by Sperls on 7/3/2021 & rated 92 points: From magnum. Still pretty big and somewhat sweet with lots of herbs and tar. Just beginning to get some secondary characteristics. Good finish. Probably stays at this plateau for another 3-5+ years but unclear how much better it gets. Great value. (1365 views)
Tasted by jayw on 4/5/2021: This is on the more flamboyant side of Chateauneuf du Pape, with almost Port-like sweetness. Some savory notes, too, but not as much as I would like. The acidity helps. It didn't work with steak for dinner, so I tried it later with some Stilton cheese, which was a better pairing. Kind of like a Port lite. Drink now. (1690 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 4/2/2021: Special wine. A lot of sweetness, sweet licorice, celery and soy. Very ripe dark berries. Beside that also good acidity. The second day the wine had hardly changed. Still the same tertiary impressions and still pleasant acidity. In fact I finished the bottle. Nevertheless no score. (1815 views)
Tasted by tom_wine on 2/28/2021 & rated 91 points: Still youthful fruit with fine tannins, unctuous raspberry notes with good dose of black licorice, pepper, red currants. Floral nose with raspberry, blackberry and herbal notes, particularly rosemary. (1634 views)
Tasted by btock on 12/12/2020 & rated 90 points: Opened alongside a to-go cassoulet from one of our fav restaurants in the area. Rich purple coloring, consistent with a previous bottle more fruit than funk here. Rich palate and holding well. Have been concerned about '07s but this did well. My wife doesn't love CdP but she liked this more fruit forward profile. One more, will plan to enjoy in next year or two. (1554 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
