Tasted by pbaek on 4/15/2022 flawed bottle: Corked (893 views)
Tasted by trumpet60201 on 9/27/2021 & rated 93 points: This is drinking very well. I don't think I would have liked this wine in its youth, but it has been very fun and delicious to drink over the past couple years. There is still a ton of very ripe fruit on the nose (strawberries, raspberries), but it is not overly jammy at this point given the tertiary notes on the wine - rather, the fruit seems to be shining now. The alcohol shows a bit too much on the nose and the palate for my taste. The tertiary notes on the nose (forest floor, dried mushrooms, leather) add such a nice dimension. The tannins are very fine but still present - mostly resolved though. Acidity is nice. My cork was perfect - I used a Durand and had no problems. (1083 views)
Tasted by GeorgeSW on 5/6/2021 & rated 90 points: Raspberry ,stewed prune, forest floor, lead pencil, hint of strawberry. Full bodied. One bottle remaining. (1229 views)
Tasted by trumpet60201 on 7/7/2020 & rated 93 points: Showing signs of age, but still drinking beautifully. (1690 views)
Tasted by trumpet60201 on 2/7/2020 & rated 94 points: Still outstanding. (1751 views)
Tasted by trumpet60201 on 11/29/2019 & rated 93 points: Outstanding wine. Drink up. Not sure it has much more time. (1446 views)
Tasted by SMHalps on 10/19/2018 flawed bottle: Oxidized or corked....Pristine capsule and cork. Both looked new. The bottom of the cork was saturated a dark purple. Oddly, as I pulled the cork, a paper clip flew out of the bottle! The wine smelled off, and tasted worse. No chance that air was going to help this out. (1996 views)
Tasted by Brain Capers on 10/7/2018: Very nice, rich and sweet, no heat (alcohol) from the vintage, the last bottle. With a nice lamb stew. (1579 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 9/19/2018 & rated 91 points: From magnum. Fully mature but still lovely. Everything I love about ChnP. (1276 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 10/11/2017 & rated 78 points: A blend of Grenache (80%) and Syrah (10%), the remainder filled out with Mourvèdre and Cinsaut. 14,5% alcohol. Annual production 40,000 bottles.

Translucent, medium-deep and very slightly maroon-hued garnet color with an almost completely colorless rim. Somewhat developed, even a bit old and quite raisined nose with some earthy tones, a little bit of pruney fruit and a little bit of umami meat stock character. The nose feels a bit underwhelming, lacking in depth and intensity of aromas. The wine is broad, round and juicy, but lacking the weight and power of Usseglio's Aïeul 2003 tasted alongside. There are sweet, rich flavors of overripe black cherries, very sweet and almost jammy strawberries, red fruit-flavored jelly candies, some peppery spice and a hint of alcohol. The mouthfeel is very smooth and soft, even quite flabby and flat, thanks to the low acidity and very mellow tannins that have been fully rounded by the age. The high-ish alcohol makes the wine feel rather warm on the palate. The finish is sweet, hot and quite flabby with rich but rather short flavors of strawberry jam, prunes, some raisins and a hint of beef consommé.

A heavy, fat and dull Châteauneuf-du-Pape that has "hot vintage" written all over it. The wine lacks focus, freshness and elegance completely and is only about scorched, raisiny fruit and jammy sweetness. Furthermore, the wine is very fat and flabby, yet it doesn't show the gravitas and concentration of the more successful examples of the vintage. This is just dull, sweet fruit without any power behind it. This is not a big and strong sumo wrestler, this is just a fat and tired fellow. Probably not particularly great wine to begin with and definitely nothing interesting anymore. Drinkable, yes, but enjoyable? Not really. (1904 views)
Tasted by Neurowine1 on 8/24/2017: Hmm, interesting. Quite different than the btl I drank last year. This one is surprisingly spry and youthful for its age, without any of the jam or roastiness I was expecting for the vintage (or from the last btl). This is really quite nice, although I have certainly lost my enthusiasm for CdPs in general over the years. (1810 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 3/17/2017 & rated 88 points: Nice nose of orange peel, ripe red cherries, sous-bois, roasted meat (Usseglio signature).... Very fresh with ripe red cherries, bacon fat, light and delicious... was probably better 5 years ago. (2377 views)
Tasted by deetz on 2/27/2017 & rated 75 points: Well passed prime...bummer. Hardly drinkable, use for cooking or sangria at this point. (1993 views)
Tasted by Dan & Patti on 2/14/2017 & rated 93 points: Past it's prime but still excellent (1918 views)
Tasted by cab on 12/9/2016: Had two bottles of this left. Opened the first one and it was so over the hill as to be undrinkable. Overripe fruit and nothing else. Brown in the glass,. The second bottle was over the hill, but drinkable. A lot of heat, not that pleasant, but then some classic Rhone flavors in there, barely. Let this be a lesson - open no wine after its time. (1684 views)
Tasted by Iceman611 on 11/15/2016 & rated 91 points: Smooth and integrated. I enjoyed this wine very much. (1624 views)
Tasted by deetz on 11/14/2016 & rated 88 points: Definitely toward the end of its lifecycle but still in a good place right now. Has strong stewed/pruney aromas, but also shows more complexity underneath. Notes of kirsch, bitter almonds/cyanide, root beer, minerality, and a touch of baking spices. Palate is still remarkably tannic with woody flavors and very ripe strawberries. Medium plus acidity. The pruney-ness is a touch hard to move past on the nose, which makes this harder to love, but still an interesting wine. (1044 views)
Tasted by pdxwineguy on 9/24/2016 & rated 91 points: Still a lot going on. Starts off herbacious and light ,but dark fruits. Complemented good very well and after 2 hours developed more structure (chalky soil?) but kept just enough fruit to remain balanced. Wish I had more. (1201 views)
Tasted by Neurowine1 on 6/13/2016 & rated 90 points: I do taste the heat of the vintage here and the wine is a little stew-y and the fruit is jammy. It comes off tasting quite sweet, esp compared to the Cote Rotie we paired it with. There is very classic barnyard/chicken coop/Diaper Genie which is the really fun reason to drink CdP after all! I really enjoyed this despite it being a bit atypical. (1480 views)
Tasted by rm97 on 6/5/2016 & rated 91 points: Nice but reaching end of life (1307 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 1/9/2016: PopnPour, tasted over 2 hrs, bottle from secondary market
-nearly semi-translucent med red with mild bricking
-moderately aromatic pretty cherry/kirsch
-med acidity, barely med weight with hint of residual cherry liqueur fruit, med/med- tannins but noticeable heat on somewhat medicinal finish
-surprisingly light weight and color for a CdP, pretty aromatics, this bottle is probably on its plateau as I'd be concerned the heat will become more prominent as the fruit dissipates further (1641 views)
Tasted by Roentgen Ray on 12/27/2015 & rated 94 points: I had a taste of this and it was terrific. The grape, place, ripeness, all were in balance. The age was not a thing I thought about, because it was perfectly complex like a ripe plum, but not sweet, fat, hot, or heavy. (1759 views)
Tasted by jayw on 10/31/2015: Very ripe. Cherry, strawberry, leather, garrique. A bit much by itself, but matched very well with a 9-olive mix. (1647 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 10/14/2015 & rated 89 points: Consumed over 2 days. A nice smooth easy-drinking CDP. It was slightly clunky upon opening, with anise and slightly large fruit. It mellowed out after about an hour and was relatively balanced. A larger than average and slightly modern CDP that made me think how restrained this is for such a hot vintage, while everyone in this region seems to be making even bigger wines in newer vintages. (1574 views)
Tasted by Mlermontov on 6/12/2015 & rated 90 points: Sveta's Bday Bash at Prune: fully mature - no reason to hold. excellent balance for an 03 - no overripe notes at all. clean red fruit, fruit and herb mid, nice long finish. the acidity is fresh but maybe a touch "rough". good wine - and great value. Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
