Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 107 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Wamrod on 3/28/2024 & rated 93 points: Wine of the night. Dark garnet to the eye, just a hint of bricking at the edges - wonderful nose. This performed like a young adult in the peak of health. Very slight bitterness on the end of a long finish. Drink and enjoy. (333 views)
Tasted by bryon m on 12/3/2023 & rated 90 points: I was most impressed with the color (slight brown on the edge) and body. It brings some berries from start to end. It is a good wine not great. It is always great to taste fruit from 3 decades in the past.

I enjoyed the 2014 much more this week which was obviously significantly different. (619 views)
Tasted by rmh66 on 10/31/2023 & rated 94 points: Gorgeous nose of plums, cassis, red cherries, tobacco, earth, minerals, leafy greens, new leather, a hint of violets and menthol. Tart cherries, plums, blackberries, red cherries, spice, earth, and herbs on the palate. Bright and tangy acidity, grippy tannins, med-long finish. Really amazing that this is over 30 years old. It has so many primary elements still. Wow, what a lovely wine with food. (651 views)
Tasted by KingSlacker999 on 10/28/2023: Drank far younger than a 1990. Still very vibrant, but some of the expected green notes are showing up. Based on this bottle, no rush to drink soon. (633 views)
Tasted by WineRay05 on 6/23/2023 & rated 94 points: Surprisingly holding strong after 33 years. (1069 views)
Tasted by martin_e on 12/10/2022 & rated 95 points: This is beautiful true-Bordeaux-style Cabernet! It has classic spicy tobacco aromas, black fruit palate with sweet plum notes, and very smooth structure. Still goes strong with no signs of old age. Highly recommend, especially considering rather approachable prices. (1396 views)
Tasted by Boone's Farm on 7/9/2020 & rated 90 points: Pretty California cab with tones of red fruit, some slight hints of black fruit and cigar smoke with wet earth. Slight hint of bitterness that detracted a little. Served with a 1984 Robert Mondavi Reserve and a 1986 La Mission Haut Brion. The Mondavi was the pick of the litter but the Berninger was better than the La Miss. (3385 views)
Tasted by Bert’s Stache on 1/18/2020 & rated 89 points: Still very good with plenty of fruit and bouquet. Probably missed its peak about 5 years ago. (2954 views)
Tasted by TonyCanova on 8/28/2019 & rated 94 points: Parker was spot on. Have had this wine it’s entire life. Drinking perfectly in 2019. Parker said 2011-2021. Super soft but with still very fresh fruit. Tanins perfectly balanced with the fruit. Color still deep ruby red. Sediment was moderate. Nose a bit short after 20 min of decanting. (3871 views)
Tasted by Matthesen on 8/11/2019 & rated 92 points: Pretty nose of black fruit and cigar box. Really lovely mix of Napa fruit and Bordeaux complexity. Some tannin, but nicely integrated. Enough acid to balance. Long finish. Not as good at '91 and '92 ... but a tasty wine and great value. (3613 views)
Tasted by ElAzul on 6/13/2019 & rated 92 points: Giving it the same score as previous bottle. This time the cork came out easily and in one piece with an ah-so puller. Silly smooth and sweet tannins. The dark fruit is still present along with prominent cedar and tobacco , just a lovely mature wine. (3332 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 5/28/2019 & rated 93 points: Straight out the bottle upon opening was almost pinot-like as it was light bodied, rose colored and soft red fruit. With air it darkened and added some black cherry and raspberry. Very balanced but not too much acidity. Some bricking around the edges. Some tobacco and cigar box notes. Very nice almost 30 year old wine. (2134 views)
Tasted by srh on 2/9/2019: Winebar [4 Whites, 8 Reds, & 4 *shared* bottles] from 02/08/19 (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): THANK you for yet ANOTHER *winner*, Dr. Tom! :)

Had been decanted for ~45 mins before I tried it

99% C.S. & 1% C.F., 47% from Bancroft Ranch, 27% Chabot, 25% Home Ranch, & the 1% C.F. from Bancroft Ranch

N: Attractively ripe beries, flowers, & probably smoke, rest tough to parse; [Though relatively inexperienced with Bordeaux, that's what came to mind for me. Moreover, 2 *far* more experienced tasters felt similarly.]

P: LM body; NICE, almost swtish frt met by some puckerish astringncy which QUITE loses its punch by the LONG, balanced, SPICY, very, VERY slightly tangy finish with a pleasant bitter/swt choc aspect that encourages more food/another sip. Right now would still be BEAUTIFUL with food, though fall off WAS noticed after 3+ hrs in a small tasting glass. Nonetheless, SHOULD hold for several more yrs. My EXC+/Exceptional-. 94 pts ea WA (from an 05/2011 review) & WS. [This vendor's $119.95 (1 bottle left?) is $29 < wine-searcher's only other listed source.] (2473 views)
Tasted by colima on 5/20/2018 & rated 91 points: This one was rated as drink by 2015. I tried it anyway - really good in an older wine kind of way. Very smooth. The nose -especially early on- was terrific. Color was well into bricky. Aired for an hour beforehand. Other notes vary on this - I think it drank better earlier after being opened. After an hour the tannins were very pronounced, the nose was almost gone. Still a very nice wine if you like mature wines. (3295 views)
Tasted by BrunelloBob on 4/8/2018: Didn't really live up to expectations, but this was by the fire pit, and it was in the 40s. May have been too cool. (3072 views)
Tasted by ElAzul on 4/7/2018 & rated 92 points: Level of wine was only 1/2 inch below cork but the cork crumbled upon extraction. Filtered with coffee filter and drank directly. Wine is fully mature with eArth and cedar nose and BlackBerry fruit on palate. Flowery nose evolved after three hours and finish was now 5-10 seconds. Beautiful wine but seems mature. Tobacco notes very prominent after 4 hours so had to add a couple of points to score. (2863 views)
Tasted by jgh123 on 11/13/2017 & rated 95 points: Beautiful, fully mature California cab. Tannins completely integrated; still good acidity. Mineral, coffee, tobacco. Drink over the next few years. (3300 views)
Tasted by Peech on 7/14/2017 & rated 91 points: more Bordeaux-like, with some sweet fruit and a little smoke. More tannic than the 1989. (966 views)
Tasted by tutticalvi on 12/11/2016 flawed bottle: Corked (5418 views)
Tasted by Nothung on 2/11/2016 & rated 93 points: Fading, but still beautiful. Drunk right after opening and without decanting, which was the way to go. (5766 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 9/6/2015 flawed bottle: Corked. (6335 views)
Tasted by docjer on 2/28/2015 & rated 96 points: minimal sediment, color dk purple, friuty nose, no tannic characters (6948 views)
Tasted by Tgood on 2/18/2015 & rated 92 points: Black, cedar and tobacco and blackberry, evident but gentle silky tannins, wife guessed bordeaux (6679 views)
Tasted by BrunelloBob on 5/23/2014 & rated 92 points: Soft, but perfect cork releases an aromatic explosion. Still delicious, but more mineral, more leather, more olive than I remember. Time to drink, if you like a decent fruit load on your aged cab. (6107 views)
Tasted by JimN on 3/22/2014 & rated 92 points: What a very pleasant surprise. First bottle from this vintage. PnP. Immediately struck by the vibrant color; showing no visible signs of age. Youthful nose but stately on the palate. My Ca Cab loving wife sniffed out just enough Bordeaux earthiness to decide it wasn't for her. Nice food wine, but not ready for ribeye anymore. Tannins have all but disappeared. Should hold for a few more years, but in a great place right now. (4984 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
