Tasted by Boone's Farm on 3/30/2024 & rated 88 points: I have had this wine numerous times before. I have loved this wine in the past. Recently got this at a Skinner auction. I do not think it was stored properly. Disappointing wine. Drank 2 bottles out of a 10 bottle lot. Hopefully this was an anomaly (300 views)
Tasted by Theamateurwinesnob on 1/25/2024: Tasted 6 wines with a small group: 4 of 6, this was double blind.

- Med, garnet, slight bricking
- Savory, grilled veggies note, maybe slightly ashy, bell pepper but not too prominent, dark fruit, plum/prunes, milk chocolate, eucalyptus
- Med body, med acidity, med tannins, med mineral finish

I guess Loire valley cab franc with some bottle age. Pretty far off and really enjoyed this wine. (660 views)
Tasted by VinoGeeko on 12/8/2023 & rated 94 points: Drank beautifully as final non dessert wine with Thanksgiving dinner..

Likely Plateaued for a while longer. Lovely! (777 views)
Tasted by paulst on 10/28/2023 & rated 92 points: Some tar and leather; textured; cherry-blackberry. (1043 views)
Tasted by Boone's Farm on 10/28/2023 & rated 94 points: Black and red fruit. Balanced and smooth. Tobacco, cedar, and pencil shavings. Lovely wine (854 views)
Tasted by docwong3 on 2/5/2023: date unknown (1879 views)
Tasted by Gregmonroe on 2/4/2023: JD Friday Wine Group - ED host (City Club, FW): Served blind - this was mine, and most at the table's, wine of the night. A bit of bricking around the rim, and a bit of a dusty cherry nose. Very dry, and fairly high tannins. When first tasting through, before food, this one seemed faded. But with the steak, it popped, and more cranberry flavors came out. I thought it was merlot heavy, and called a 2000 or 2005 right bank BDX. (1603 views)
Tasted by SMWSLT on 2/21/2022 & rated 93 points: Still a delight, smoothly cruising a long plateau of drinkability, the 1987 Mondavi Reserve remains an alluring, full bodied, complex red. The palate exhibits a brooding quality with significant depth to the sweet black fruits, earth, tobacco and leather. The finish is long and smooth with a few spicy nuances. Although the 1991 Reserve presents a bit more clarity and complexity, the 1987 is a star in its own right. (3477 views)
Tasted by Lipsman on 1/30/2022 & rated 95 points: What a fine old Cabernet from the days when Mondavi made great wines. Surprisingly slight bricking at the edge of an otherwise garnet glass of wine. Unctuous almost syrupy texture. The tannins are completely melded. The flavors are deep, pure and honest, strawberries, plums, spices, a hint of cigar box cedar, all grounded in an earthy strata structured with a delicious sweet edge and fresh acidity. Wonderful! This has years ahead of it. (3208 views)
Tasted by iainlo@gmail.com on 1/28/2022 & rated 91 points: Bought at HK auction, allowed it a week to rest before opening. Label fell off but cork was in superb condition. PNP. Still dark ruby colour, not much sign of age on the rim. Nose was immediately expressive of dark fruits, straw and peppery notes. Medium body on the palate with very deep and solid core of black fruits, chocolates, cedar and again that slight pepperiness in the finish. Very long, very enjoyable. Compared to Dominus (my favourite Napa) this wine is more hedonistic, more flamboyant, less precision and less complexity but just as enjoyable (3118 views)
Tasted by paulst on 12/16/2021 & rated 94 points: Juicy with earthy raspberry; nice finish. (2851 views)
Tasted by nywine68 on 12/16/2021 & rated 93 points: Beautifully fragrant nose of licorice and stewed blackberries. Lighter body but plenty of flavor intensity. Superfine tannins give it just enough backbone. Fully mature but the fruit is still there and it remains fresh and vibrant. (2654 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 11/27/2021 & rated 92 points: Faded old Cab with touch of sweetness. (1677 views)
Tasted by paulst on 10/26/2021 & rated 94 points: Earthy blueberry and mocha; crunchy; full; long smooth finish. (1722 views)
Tasted by Xxxxxxxxxx on 10/2/2021 & rated 91 points: Consistent with recent bottle but more mature, brick showing, lighter color, dark fruits and some tannin remain. This should be opened now so I will arrange for the remaining two to have a good home. Tastes like Mondavi reserve. (1601 views)
Tasted by paulst on 9/21/2021 & rated 98 points: Near perfect smooth harmony with sweet earthy cherry-raspberry-blackberry-light licorice; balanced; fully integrated tannin with long sweet crunchy but round finish; outstanding. (1692 views)
Tasted by Xxxxxxxxxx on 9/21/2021 & rated 96 points: This is great terroir with talented handling. Wonderful some five hours in. Great red and darker fruit. Integrated tannins. Long finish. Dark ink with barely a hint of amber at the meniscus. Three more in cellar. Really, really nice. Bravo! (1501 views)
Tasted by TonyCanova on 8/20/2021 & rated 96 points: These old school mondavi reserves are just so awesome. This one drinking so amazingly great. Shockingly has a very dunn Howell mountain character. Color still excellent. Fruit completely still there. Tanins so balanced. This is the pinnacle of California 80s cab. Only have two bottles left. (1606 views)
Tasted by paulst on 7/11/2021 & rated 91 points: Tar and blackberry; balanced and resolved; a bit light; moderate finish. (1804 views)
Tasted by paulst on 5/27/2021 & rated 93 points: Initially saline-sweet blackberry; soft tannin; resolved; elegant; soft smooth finish. (1796 views)
Tasted by BradE on 1/20/2021: The word that comes to mind is "memories". This wine goes way back, and this, my last bottle, brings memories tumbling out. I wish I could remember all the bottles back in the day at steak houses for business dinners. Still an extremely nice wine, and paired exceptionally well with a Wagyu ribeye. Only drank half of the bottle (showing restraint). (2704 views)
Tasted by NavyVet6874 on 12/15/2020: Pulled from cellar 3 hours earlier than the special Zoom call for my wife's coworkers' retirement. This was a gift on her retirement 5 years ago. Definitely a "mature" wine, and the oldest I've ever had. Opened after 2 hours, crusty cork top under the foil. Cork was soaked and soft, but didn't break until halfway out. The rest came out easily. Sipped over the next 2 hours. Fruit is mostly gone, nose intriguing, no bricking and surprisingly light in body, subtle tannins. Still enjoyable, but I need more exposure to decades-old wine to give any rating. Plenty of loose sediment at the end of the bottle. (2485 views)
Tasted by GKroll on 11/26/2020 & rated 93 points: Opened for Thanksgiving pre-game dinner. Had a bottle a couple of years ago which was also great. Started out tight and peppery, after 30 minutes it started developing cedar, faint cherry, earthy, gamey, notes with more pepper. Still has some tannin, smooth, color is brick red, no browning on the edges. No sediment. Herbal, succulent. Faint pencil lead. Gorgeous nose. (2393 views)
Tasted by DrBad on 11/7/2020 & rated 90 points: Decided to drink the oldest bottle in the cellar to celebrate the oldest elected President. Aired in the bottle for about 30 minutes and had with porterhouse steak. Nice aromas of forrest floor and cedar but the fruit has mostly left the building on this one, some red cherry but not a lot of complexity, mostly on the tart side. Still fun to drink but definitely past it's prime. (2578 views)
Tasted by Boone's Farm on 9/27/2020 & rated 92 points: Decanted right out of the cellar. It was a little too cold which detracted. Plum and red fruit with hints of black fruit. A touch of spice flavors such as cinnamon. None of the forest floor aromas or flavors you get in an old Bordeaux. A very nice old school California Cabernet (2419 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
