Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 241 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Ex-Ray on 7/20/2021 & rated 97 points: After 14 years, still garnet-purple and completely opaque, with the slightest amber edge. Very pronounced aromas of pure blackberries with some oak, really nothing else. Big "smash-mouth" jammy, concentrated and dense wine, viscous, with some tannin but staying back behind the fruit. Also has high acidity and definitely high alcohol. Aftertaste very rich, full, hot, and long. This was one of Sarah and Sparkey's best wines, considering quality and price point. This has huge fruit and power, without complexity or elegance, but an outstanding example of the particular style.

Tasted by europat55 on 6/6/2021 & rated 91 points: This is my 6th bottle from a purchase made in 2009 and my concerns about the heat on the nose from my early reviews are gone and this wine is quite enjoyable, if you like the fairly intense fruit-forward, meaty/spicy style. (1246 views)
Tasted by ashife on 11/22/2020 & rated 93 points: Still a lot of kick. Needs a good amount of decanting, but beautiful balance once ready. (1433 views)
Tasted by Altonplace on 1/25/2020 & rated 95 points: A score not given lightly. Kept at 55F, this McLaren Vale special did not disappoint. Bursting with vivant berry flavor and balanced with undertones of pleasant tannins, this is, simply, a spectacular wine. (1724 views)
Tasted by Ex-Ray on 7/13/2019 & rated 95 points: Excellent, at its peak, has smoothed out since release. Still very fragrant and full-bodied but nicely balanced. Long aftertaste. Won't fade any time soon.

Tasted by chuckos77 on 2/9/2019 & rated 90 points: Definitely towards the downhill side. Still in excellent shape but don’t see any upside to this wine. The acidity is completely gone and although these wines are fruit forward when young, this wine was like blueberries in the mouth. Delicious and would be enjoyed but majority of people. Drink up (1188 views)
Tasted by Acohen on 12/28/2018 & rated 91 points: Rich sweet blueberry and plum (1165 views)
Tasted by Doctor Koulodare on 11/30/2018 & rated 95 points: Spectacular. Meaty Cherry and intense plum notes, spicy, opulent on the mouth. (1045 views)
Tasted by skifree on 4/18/2018 & rated 82 points: Thankfully this is my last Mollydooker. Remains an extracted, fruit forward, spicy smack in the mouth. I think it was well made with its intended outcome, hence the score in the 80's. (1534 views)
Tasted by skifree on 1/30/2018: First glass I had made after PnP me go "yuck", made me think of a plum and blueberry compote with alcohol added. After 24 hours it settled down into a "good" wine (82), meaning it was enjoyable but not memorable. (1352 views)
Tasted by SLLDAL on 1/7/2018 flawed bottle: Apparently this is past its prime. Passable, but not company-worthy. (1243 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/11/2017 flawed bottle: Ribs and Big Reds (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): DOA, no fruit remaining, it has been consumed by the voracious 16.5% alcohol. (1891 views)
Tasted by prism on 9/15/2016 & rated 90 points: Pooped and poured. Very rich and concentrated, masking the high octane. Very blue, very deep, very tasty. A sipper. Would not have wanted to drink this any younger; should hold for another year or more, but no reason to wait if you want smooth, jammy, powerful. (3694 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 9/14/2016 & rated 90 points: A Cool Early Fall Wednesday Afternoon (Rocknroller's (Kevin's)): Very dark purple red color. Decanted for 15 minutes; drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. The nose is big with black and blue fruits of blackberry and blueberry, plum, vanilla, roasted meat, spice. The palate is a bit jammy, blackberry, boysenberry, plum, savory, pepper, wood and a bit of heat at the end. Holds its massive 16.5% ABV remarkably well though. (3491 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 9/14/2016 & rated 92 points: Hanging out at Kevin's (Rocknroller): Nose: Blue fruits in adbundance. Palate: Sweet dark fruits with good length (3227 views)
Tasted by wculpepper on 11/30/2015 & rated 87 points: Double decanted; heavy sediment. Poured one hour later: Inky purple color. Blueberries, tobacco, minerals and far too much heat on the nose. Quite full bodied, concentrated blueberry jam on the palate, overwhelming whatever acids and tannins may be present. Long jammy finish. Overall, nothing subtle about this: just concentrated dark fruit juice plus alcohol. Probably will not improve with further age, and I plan to drink my remaining three bottles over the next year. At $50/bottle, a poor QPR. (4263 views)
Tasted by WineKnurd on 11/21/2015 & rated 79 points: Nov 21st 2015 "Getting the Band back Together" Tasting at Adam's (Phredd's Casa): Sheila's wine (she also brought the 2006 as a comparison). If I thought the 2006 was one-dimensional, it had the complexity of the 2009 Lafite compared to the 2007. Alcoholic grape jelly which such viscosity that the burning astringency would not leave my palate even after a water rinse. Less jet fuel and more napalm; 16.5% abv on the label has me wondering how the Aussies calibrate their instruments. Overall evaluation: C. (4234 views)
 Tasted by TheBoxGuy on 9/22/2015 & rated 92 points: Drink 1 bottle/year (2594 views)
Tasted by Bobc7had on 5/7/2015 & rated 89 points: 2 years since my last bottle.
Lovely , but lacking the fruit that makes this special.

Tasted by mptorpey on 4/13/2015 & rated 90 points: Dark fruit, and jam. Full body creamy mouthfeel. Very viscous with caramel notes on the nose. (3376 views)
Tasted by dogsbrekky on 12/10/2014 & rated 95 points: Sensational big black-purple wine from Sparky... reminds me of the Stellar's Garden from 2004 and so on.

Also has some edgness of the brilliant E&E Black Pepper Shirazes of the 1990s.

Big ripe berry, stewed quince, black squid ink, some black pepper and smoke.

A touch of cigar and eucalyptus.

.... this stuff is better than sex but you will either love this HUGE wine or hate it...

It is not for little Nonces ! (3234 views)
Tasted by winepaw on 11/26/2014 & rated 90 points: Very full bodied, ripe, highly extracted dark berry fruit with hints of tar. Substantial wine best paired with robust, red meat dishes. (2623 views)
Tasted by cpdwines on 9/20/2014 & rated 84 points: Way too fruity. Odd flavor that wasn't enjoying that much. (2869 views)
Tasted by M Macht on 6/19/2014 & rated 94 points: Deep purple, amazing blueberry pie fruit bomb with a long satisfying finish. (3291 views)
Tasted by deBare on 5/12/2014 & rated 88 points: Molly Dooker remains among my favourite wines but reports by others of 'inkiness' certainly was the case with this 2007 bottle of Blue-Eyed Boy. Decanted for several hours but it remained a thick mouthful of wine. Pair decently with the tenderloin steaks but overall not what I remembered or expected. I still liked the wine but couldn't give it 90+ like I have in the past. (3497 views)
