Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 31 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by kostaslonis on 11/11/2023: Sample tasting at work (Oinoscent): Brought to drink with the team, 45 minutes open and then tasted, no decant
The wine shows deep golden color
In the nose, the wine opens to overripe citrus and stone fruit notes, very spicy, thin nutty frame, some heavier floral notes
Palate shows the same flavor profile, high acidity, spicy again, overripe citrus, quince, nutty, full body, long persistent finish
Needs plenty of time to open up (342 views)
(658 views)
Tasted by Chris Davies on 3/6/2023 & rated 88 points: Not terrible but disappointing . Very simple for such a grand wine, was very lean and unbalanced . 3- (520 views)
Tasted by winesteward on 12/2/2020 & rated 85 points: Almost gold. Quite a few notes here comment on some oxidation. Fortunately this bottle didn't have any of that. Nose and palate pretty consistent with each other. Green apples, unripe pears, lime and lemon. Very steely and dry. Decent length. Good enough with some sausages and sauerkraut, but I think declining already. Based on this bottle, drink up soon. (1635 views)
Tasted by Ltim BE on 7/26/2020 & rated 90 points: Last bottle was December 2018. This bottle is more advanced, golden yellow with a slight oxidative touch. Still good but should be drunk now. (1520 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 8/11/2019 & rated 92 points: Golden yellow. Color a bit advanced appearing. A whiff of petrol on the nose. Apricot, nectarine, ripe melon. A hit of balancing sugar- plenty of bracing acidity remains. Just a hit of an oxidative note on the finish keeps this from being spectacular. (1664 views)
Tasted by I1bearup on 7/26/2019 & rated 94 points: On point across the board. Lime, citrus, petrol, mineral. Mouthfeel was killer with a bit of weight in mid that rolled into classic Rangen mineral and acid. (1442 views)
Tasted by Ltim BE on 12/8/2018 & rated 91 points: H2H with the 2005
The 2005 is very fruity, delicate and refined with a rich taste and fully integrated acidity. Stunning.
The 2007 is less fruity and more mineral flinty with a sharper acidity and shorter finish. Very good.
2005 is in a great drinking window now
2007 should be aged longer (1672 views)
Tasted by SonnyChiba on 8/8/2017 & rated 93 points: Great Riesling. Everything you hope for, citrus, acidity, rich mid palate, minerals on the finish. Slight petrol. Really enjoyed this. (2168 views)
Tasted by Patoche on 5/20/2017 & rated 93 points: Very good wine. Opens with air. Definitely dry. Long after taste. Pairs beautifully with carpaccio salmon. (2367 views)
Tasted by phenricsson on 11/27/2016 & rated 94 points: Very impressive but hard to really love. Very concentrated but more minerals and crushed rock than fruit. Salty, hard. After two days in the fridge with a cork in it the final third was not tasting good. Got even harder and more salty and minerally. Don't really know what that means.... (2471 views)
Tasted by dead puddle on 7/29/2016 & rated 92 points: Well, opened lonely, as I could die the next day. Nice hue, golden, attractive. Rich nose of jamy pineaple, quince, kiwi, gazoline and new plastic doll, signature of riesling for me. Mouth, woaw, straight, and bitter like a green lemon juice, nice matter, medium length finishes on shy previous exotic notes. Excellent. For purist of mineral wines.91+ (2550 views)
Tasted by olemski on 6/11/2016 & rated 93 points: Golden, flowers, a note of honey, and a hint of goosberry marmelade. Light yet substantial in the mouth, and by no means as rich as the previous bottle. At the height of its powers, I would say. (2583 views)
Tasted by olemski on 4/5/2015 & rated 93 points: Linear, some "Firne", minerals and citrus. Long aftertaste, and fully mature. (2711 views)
Tasted by Papies on 2/19/2014 & rated 92 points: Quite a full colour for its age. The nose is verging on textbook, light petrolly, white flowers. Open and beautiful nose. Some sweet undertone too points to residual sugar but on the palate if felt dry. Quite a helthy level of acidity here keeps the balance right, green apple feel, mineral. Had a few sharp edges here and there but a pretty solid wine. 92 and with good ageing capacity. (3701 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 12/31/2013 & rated 96 points: Hats off to Olivier Humbrecht!
Great dry Riesling - one of the best I have come across.
This is a textural wine, not much aroma on the nose and on the palate fruit is hidden behind the mineral dimension. Yet this wine has stunning concentration, body and power. Also amazing balance due to high extract keeping high acidity in check. Almost bone dry and mouth-cleansing finish. Not an easy wine to understand but to my taste this is one of the great white wines, on par and quite similar - although unmistakably Riesling - with great aged white Graves. Finesse, power and texture. For those who own bottles, great future.

Tasted by ttuominen on 3/20/2013 & rated 86 points: Pretty consistent with my last note. Nice nose and great acidity with a long apple finish, but there is a massive lack of fruit on the attack and mid-palate. Perhaps a bit fuller than last time, but only marginally. For me, not great value. (3594 views)
Tasted by ttuominen on 7/23/2012 & rated 85 points: C: Deep gold, some bubbles on the inside of the glass
N: Quite intense, white flowers, dried apricots, honey
P: Lacking fruit. Nothing on the attack. Very acidic throughout, alcohol under control. A decently heavy mouthfeel, but there is just no fruit. Some riesling flavours emerge on the back end, but the finish is also a bit on the short side.
O: Hopeful on the nose, disappointed on the palate. Huge acid, but not enough fruit to carry it. Perhaps an off-bottle? Glad I have one more. (3466 views)
Tasted by bigop on 5/5/2012 & rated 92 points: Golden yellow colour, some legs.
Med intensity of white flowers, acacias, honey wax and some petroly aromas.
High acidity, med+ alcohol, full bodied with med+ intensity of flavours (see nose + peach and yellow apple) and Med+ length.
Outstanding bottle of Riesling, great balance, excellent complexity and interest...LOVED it! (2787 views)
Tasted by Jay Hack on 4/20/2012 & rated 92 points: This is an outstanding dry riesling with a great balance between minerality (are these vines growing in limestone soil?) and fruit. Popped and poured. At first, the wine was a bit reserved with tropical fruits and minerality, but as it gained air over an hour, additional fruits blossomed. There was kumquat and guava with tart Granny Smith apples, a bit of pineapple and some honey. Very smooth and a long finish. I recommend a decant of at least 45 minutes if you're drinking it now. I know it's a white wine, but trust me, it will blossom and fill the nose and the mouth with great sensations if you are just a wee bit patient. (2936 views)
Tasted by ktrh on 2/13/2012 & rated 86 points: Quite disappointing wine.
Severe, razor sharp acidity, incredible minerality, but yet it lacks the fruit to support such a dry wine. Would have been better as a slightly sweet wine? This was indice 1.
Probably consumed a few years too young. We did give it some air before, but probably not enough. (2839 views)
Tasted by igaf on 9/28/2010: Bright, light golden. Complex, fruity, ripe nose with plums, cinnamon, citrus peel, apricots and some honey. Full, concentrated, juicy on the palate, balanced with intense yet very soft acidity. Obviously young, but with great potential. Already quite long and complex, but I think, it's yet to show all its charms. Very tender, mouth covering aftertaste. (2989 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 7/8/2009 & rated 94 points: Very very young but complex with nutty, grapefruit and mineral aromas. Bone-dry (this was indice 1, the dryest version of this cuvee) and promising a great future. Endless finish.
Not for the faint-hearted.
Tasted at the winery. (3273 views)
Tasted by Deb293 on 5/28/2009 & rated 92 points: EWS 2007 Zind-Humbrecht Preview (Warwick Hotel, NYC): Minerally yet fleshy and full bodied. Olivier called it "smoky." Maybe. Took an entire year to ferment to dryness. pH 3.4 - 3.5. (3985 views)

Zind-Humbrecht

Producer website
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is one of the stars of the Alsace, in the northeastern corner of France. Fought over for decades by Germany and France, the region, according to Robert M. Parker Jr., “is perhaps the most underrated and underutilized source of great white wines in the world.” Zind-Humbrecht was created in 1959 by Leonard Humbrecht and Genevieve Zind. Their son Olivier is now instrumental in running the 99-acre estate, which the family still owns. Like many Alsatian producers, Zind-Humbrecht makes white wines in varying degrees of sweetness, from dessert whites to very dry wines. The vineyards are planted to 30% Riesling, 30% Gewurztraminer, 29% Pinot Gris, and smaller amounts of Pinot Noir, Muscat, Chardonnay, Auxerrois and Pinot Blanc. Up to 18,000 cases are produced annually. Many are Grand Crus and single vineyard bottlings.
