Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 203 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by SineQuaNon on 5/10/2020 & rated 91 points: Wow! This is just outrageously good - especially given the designate and price back in the day. Totally fresh and giving from the getgo but still improved with a bit of breathing. Probably at peak but rather on the young side still, than the old. I wonder if the screwcap closure has anything to do with this? I agree completely with the notes below. Rated 91.48 (credit: Dan Kravitz (spelling?)) and thus much closer to 92 than 90 (1449 views)
Tasted by rldixon on 5/7/2020 & rated 92 points: Consumed in a series of Carlisle Zins:

1. 2008 Lingenfelder
2. 2008 Sonoma County
3. 2007 Sonoma County

I'm drinking my "last bottles" and this one is was delicious, seemingly at its peak. The constant I've found in Carlisle wines is balance: there's never *too much* of anything, and this wine is a good example of that.

Consumed over two nights. On night one, noted much less aroma than the 2008 on unscrewing the cap, but the tastes were prominently, but not overwhelmingly, cherries and pepper and soil, what I love about Zins. Silky tannins. On night two, there was just a bit more of everything from night one, particularly the earthiness, so much so that I was a bit wistful this was my last bottle of this one. (1141 views)
Tasted by Ed B on 4/21/2018 & rated 92 points: PnP at a restaurant. No detailed notes. Smooth, rich, drinking well. Plenty of time left, but alas my last bottle. This was the screw top of the set. (I *screwed* up and drank the cork bottle by itself a few years ago.) This could be the greatest QPR wine EVER. (1883 views)
Tasted by ParisWino on 1/5/2017 & rated 89 points: Drank approximately one month ago and won't attempt to reconstruct a detailed tasting note here, but simply note that we simultaneously opened one screwcapped bottle and another bottled under cork, which had been well stored under identical conditions together. The difference was not huge, but the screw-capped bottle did taste modestly fresher (enough to tell them apart blind). The wine was consistent with the house style for SC zins (to the extent it exists) and beginning a gentle course downhill, but still quite pleasurable. (2588 views)
Tasted by JBD on 9/17/2016: Old. (3141 views)
Tasted by stufis on 11/18/2014 & rated 89 points: Perhaps the very best Appellation Zin I've had from Carlisle. Sweeter than most on the attack (a very pleasant surprise), lengthy finish, tons of fruit. Only issue was...twas my last one! Ack! (4496 views)
Tasted by SineQuaNon on 4/30/2014 & rated 90 points: Lovely nose - better than the taste - but also fine taste with just a touch too much acid. With a better balance it could've been a few points higher. (5063 views)
Tasted by stufis on 4/16/2014 & rated 86 points: Over 3 nights, it was only the last evening that this tasted like a Carlizzle...the first two showed a red, dense, almost goopy wine unyielding in anything I would characterize as a Zin, let alone a Mike Officer product. My guess is just too much homogenized vineyards to note anything distinctive.

Night 3 showed finally some of the minerality, balance and layers I expected...this is 6 years after harvest: it shouldn't be so hard to coax out the goods...thus marked down. (4460 views)
Tasted by stufis on 12/11/2013 & rated 88 points: Still going strong, altho it lacks the vigor/depth of the DRV from that vintage...hey! it also lacks about $13 on the price tag...Nicely lingering finish, so I knew it was a Carlizzle. (4208 views)
Tasted by mossreport on 11/25/2013: I am still new Carlisle's Zins but they are delicious. Popped and poured and enjoyed with a pepperoni cheese steak! (3781 views)
Tasted by Ed B on 8/9/2013 & rated 91 points: PnP at a BarBQ. Great anyway. (3141 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 6/17/2013 & rated 92 points: Sadly my last bottle of this delicious zin. My assessment is that this wine is currently drinking at its peak. Wish I had a few more to follow for a few more years. Loads of fruit and beautiful balance. (2822 views)
Tasted by texaswinelover on 5/8/2013 & rated 91 points: I really enjoyed this especially for the price. Not as complex as SVD's but delish nonetheless. Bright, high toned red fruit with more than ample acid. Honestly, I think this $20 bottle of wine needs time to settle down still and develop. Well made Zin all the way. As good as Zin/wine gets for the price. (2758 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 4/11/2013 & rated 91 points: 14.9% ABV. PNP from a bottle finished with a screwcap. Almost opaque dark garnet in the glass. Somewhat muted aromatically with a mineral note overlaying restrained zinberry. Medium-full bodied with black fruit, a touch of raisin, and a lingering sense that this could still stand to soften up a bit. Good though. (3243 views)
Tasted by GrapeScott on 2/22/2013 & rated 90 points: A very nice zin that delivers a mixture of red and black fruits, with notes of baking spice and orange peel. Showing abundant fruit, but at the same time restrained and balanced, with a moderate acid backbone and fine-grained tannins that have mostly resolved. There are herbal and earth notes as well, just a bit of peppercorn, and black cherry and blackberry flavors. As always, a great zin, nay a great wine, for very little coin. (2747 views)
Tasted by wdb001 on 2/20/2013 & rated 91 points: Mid-week pop and pour. Could not ask for much more. Great fruit, smooth, velvety texture. Yummy. (2761 views)
Tasted by cookie7 on 1/27/2013 & rated 91 points: Pop and pour - note after 1 hour. Bright red and black fruit on the nose. Black cherries and pepper on the palate. Nicely balanced. Probably at its peak. Outstanding QPR. (2616 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 1/24/2013 & rated 92 points: The wine is a deep, dark maroon color. The very promising nose has brambly berries, black pepper, vanilla, underbrush, dried herbs, licorice, violets, wood smoke, and dark chocolate. This has a medium to full body, fairly solid, ripe tannins, and good acidity. The palate has nice peppery berries, spicy oak, and vanilla up front with dried herbs and some earthiness coming in on the back end. The finish is fairly long with the peppery berries, spicy oak, and earthiness lingering nicely. This was a steal at only $17.50. (2270 views)
Tasted by lynarthur on 1/19/2013 & rated 90 points: Great value for an outstanding wine. Very smooth and fruity. Easy drinking wine with pasta. (2283 views)
Tasted by Ed B on 11/11/2012 & rated 90 points: Drank two bottles offered as a pair; one with a cork and one screw top. Decanted both 75 min. Was worried because cork showed staining. After decanting no problem. Could not detect any difference. Smooth, solid Zin, but very complex. Still very good QPR. (1873 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 10/24/2012 & rated 92 points: The wine is a deep maroon color. On the big but civilized nose there are brambly berries, black pepper, dark chocolate, vanilla, licorice, dried herbs, smoke, wild flowers, and a touch of earthiness. This is medium to full bodied with solid, ripe tannins and very nice acidity. On the palate the wine shows a load of peppery berries with licorice, dried herbs and a bit of earthiness adding depth and complexity. The finish is long and features the peppery berries. An incredible wine and an absolute steal for under $20. (2644 views)
Tasted by gr8r84u on 10/18/2012 & rated 90 points: Much better second day. Not my favorite carlisle but a very solid showing. If only it wasn't a weeknight. (2700 views)
Tasted by zheem on 10/3/2012: Not aging as elegantly as other Carlisle Zins--drink up! (2462 views)
Tasted by ljl203 on 8/26/2012 & rated 90 points: Deep berry flavor, smooth tannins. Took a good three hours to fully develop. Decant! (2664 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 8/19/2012 & rated 89 points: A whole bunch of Wines (mostly Sonoma) with friends (Chris and Renee's): Ruby/purple in color. The nose has raspberries, rhubarb, pepper and some bramble. Very balanced Zin. Not in your face. Seems fully resolved and very drinkable. Nice wine and IIRC awesome QPR. (3755 views)

Mike Officer - 2009 Winter Pe-Release letter

2007 Sonoma County Zinfandel

Wow! We were completely overwhelmed by your support last year for our 2006 Sonoma County Zinfandel. Despite being the largest lot we have ever produced, it was the first to sell out. Thank you! Unfortunately, this year's version is slightly more expensive and we have approximately half as much, but qualitatively, it's a significant step up. We've also added a twist. Literally! We are selling this wine in sets of two, one bottle with cork, the other with screwcap. For all those curious as to the difference between screwcap and cork, here's your chance to do your own trial. For those not curious, well... consider the time you'll save in opening half your bottles! ☺

Medium-dark ruby. Fragrant, textbook aromas of red cherries, briar, and pepper. This wine shouts "I am Zinfandel! Hear me roar!" On the palate, medium-full to full-bodied with red berries and spice charging the way through the lip-smacking finish. An incredible wine at an even more incredible price. Optimum enjoyment should be between late 2009 and 2013.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
