Tasted by veniceslug1 on 1/4/2020 & rated 92 points: a little fat for my taste, but drinking well. nice acidity to balance the oak. (489 views)
Tasted by veniceslug1 on 11/6/2016 & rated 92 points: great bright acid. does not show its age. really good california chard. (1065 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 5/30/2016: This pours with a gold color. It has some oompth, texture and a bit more push than I typically enjoy in my chards, yet there is acidity here that is carrying through just fine at nearly 10 years. Good core of lemon, too. I'd not age this any longer if you have them, as it's in a good spot right now IMO. (1547 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 2/9/2014 & rated 90 points: Golden yellow. Pineapple, mango and peach on the nose and palate. Has tart apple and noticeable viscosity. Has some. rhone like characteristics. Obviously trying for a more Burgundy / Chablis style. (2142 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 12/22/2013 & rated 93 points: Really impressive flashy chardonnay with a lot of tropical flavors. (2355 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 12/21/2013 & rated 93 points: Annual Tasting Group Holiday Party (Porter Creek, Mpls, MN): Light gold color. Drank 1+ glass over 45 minutes. The nose offers up some lovely tropical fruits, pineapple, mango, peach, orange zest, white florals, and crème brule. The palate was medium-full bodied, citrus, toast, dry earth, nice minerality, orange peel, lemon meringue, pineapple. Lovely balance and a long finish; this just kept getting better. I've always been a fan of Brewer-Clifton wines, they never seem to disappoint. 93+pts. (2569 views)
Tasted by tooch on 8/16/2013 & rated 91 points: Day 2 - Central Coast Tastings (Central Coast, CA): Not as racy and jaw-dropping as the 2006 drank alongside, but it was easy to tell it was cut from the same cloth. Lots of stone, salinity, and limes. Definitely fatter and more fleshy than the 2006...like drinking a 2008 chablis next to its 2009 brethren. Still incredibly good. (2542 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 8/12/2013: Wow, is this good. A smoky top note, then flavors of peach, pip apple and lemon. Chablis-like in flavor with wet rocks and an apricot skin in the finish, along with bright, lime tinged acidity, again like Chablis. This shows some ripe tones but all the acid and orchard fruit really makes this sing. Loved this wine, bought some for the cellar. (1668 views)
Tasted by clio_wine on 4/25/2013: Very Good. Hints of caramel, pears, lemons. Long finish. Absolutely yummy. <Wow/Very Good/Good/Fair/Plonk> (896 views)
Tasted by Matt Scott on 8/30/2012 & rated 95 points: A light carmel, brass and straw all intertwined, with a chrystal rim. Quince - which I simply adore - peach, honey suckle, gardenia, stone and gravel. So much body and depth. This is really hitting the perfect stride and I find the balance to be ethereal. My favorite Brewer-Clifton Chardonnay yet and beyond worth seeking out. So much white-fruit flavor, with hints of mint tea. Drink now - 2017. (1877 views)
Tasted by whits on 7/23/2012 & rated 93 points: light golden in color, great perfume of white fruit, honey and melon, this achieves a sense of place as well as varietal, shows raciness and complexities of nectarines, peaches, key lime pie, mineral and lemon peel, long finish, structured, in a perfect place for drinking right now, balanced and lovely (1445 views)
Tasted by silton on 3/2/2012 flawed bottle: Corked. (1589 views)
Tasted by sdezutti on 1/15/2012 & rated 95 points: Very nicely balanced and complex Chardonnay. I would not describe as Big or Intense, but it was full of flavor. Pronounced honeysuckle on the nose along with floral and mineral notes. This had a honey, orange marmalade characteristic that almost made it taste like there was some Semillon in the wine. Medium golden color, low acidity and very pleasant finish. Drank well with food and on its own (1763 views)
Tasted by veniceslug1 on 12/22/2011 & rated 89 points: drank well. Fruit, butter and good weight. NIce acidity. Still has some time (1633 views)
Tasted by silton on 3/5/2011 & rated 92 points: No change in 6 months. Bought another pair. More powerful than sublime at this stage, the effusive nose better than the not fully integrated palate. (1665 views)
Tasted by pdrago on 11/21/2010 & rated 92 points: Excellent Chard. Brown butter, peach, and a little green apple on the nose. Full bodied on the attack with laser like acidity coming through on the mid-palate. The minerality on this wine balances the richness of it perfectly. Clarity and focus in this wine. Wow. Got it for $20 on closeout and it is single vineyard Puligny quality. (1828 views)
Tasted by silton on 8/17/2010 & rated 92 points: One of the better Chards I've had in a while. Full bodied orchard and citrus fruit with thick minerals and balanced finishing acidity and a pretty long finish. Rather concentrated; not really elegant.

By the way, regarding plastic and wax seals, just ignore it and use your corkscrew as normal and its no problem. (1797 views)
Tasted by tantotinto on 7/7/2010 & rated 90 points: Medium gold color. A distinctly mineral nose. It might be mistaken for a Puligny if it were not for the rich fruit aromas that are also present. It has a very sensual texture, almost viscous. Flavors of peach, citrus, and minerals with a tart acidic finish. This is an excellent wine. All things considered though, we prefer the 2008 Brewer-Clifton Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills that we tried last weekend at a restaurant. We like it's comparative leaness, brine finish and more favorable price point. One downside to both is a (plastic?) seal over the cork that, for me at least, was very difficult to remove. (1914 views)
Tasted by air guitar & pinot noir on 12/6/2009 & rated 92 points: Golden yellow in color. Nose of white peaches and crushed rock. Flavors of honeysuckle and marmalade. Full-bodied mouthfeel. Sensational texture. (1471 views)
Tasted by PinotDude on 9/13/2009 & rated 92 points: Tasted at a wine tasting dinner at the City Winery in NYC. Substantial flinty nose. Full bodied, round and lush wih minimal oak. Great structure, balance and length (2431 views)

Brewer-Clifton

Producer website

Addt'l Info (Jackson Family Wine Group)

Born of an obsession with Santa Barbara County terroir, we formed Brewer-Clifton in the early 1990’s. We both had significant sales and production experience with a multitude of Santa Barbara County wineries, and always felt compelled to push the limits of the fruit from the area further than our previous employers had set forth to do. We set out to put the essence of the best vineyards in the area into a bottle.

We focus our efforts solely on the production of vineyard designated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from several carefully selected, extreme vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. The area's long growing seasons and diversity of marine-based soils combine to produce dynamic and explosive wines with great purity and precision. Each vineyard site is nurtured identically, allowing the pedigree of place to play the most significant role in our portfolio of wines.

In addition to our collective efforts, Steve Clifton also produces wine under his own label, called Palmina, which focuses exclusively on Italian varietals, and is the winemaker at Tritono, an Argentine producer of Malbec. Greg Brewer produces wine under the diatom label, as well as being the winemaker at Melville, a Santa Rita Hills winery dedicated to estate grown Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah.

Brewer-Clifton wines are only available in small quantities. Total production averages between 4,000 and 6,500 cases annually.

Brewer-Clifton is owned and operated by Steve Clifton, a musician, and Greg Brewer, a former professor of French. The pair started Brewer-Clifton in 1995 and they source grapes from the Santa Rita Hills appellation. Brewer-Clifton makes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and sparkling wine. The wines earn ratings in the 90s from reviewers, and Wine Advocate has noted that “Brewer and Clifton consistently deliver delicious wines that are also deeply thought provoking with regards to the potential these vineyard sites hold.”

2007 Brewer-Clifton Chardonnay Rancho Santa Rosa

Winemaker's Notes - This is the first of two offerings from this windswept property owned by Bill Foley. A combination of two diverse blocks planted to clones 4 and 76. Aromas of apricot, honeycomb and yellow peach followed by less overtly fruity flavors of wet stone, hard cheese and brine. Assertive and structured in the mouth. 3,456 bottles produced

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
