Community Tasting Notes (average 91 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 101 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by vinodolphin on 10/20/2023 & rated 91 points: Excellent! Still showing dark fruit and a smooth long finish. (791 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 10/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Gang of 4 Sweet Lake Farewell tasting (@ RW): Beautiful and expressive bouquet with garrigue, red and dark berries, some sweet licorice root and sweet chocolate. Very tempting nose. Same on the palate, licorice, ripe tannin and good acidity, a bit meaty, cherry bonbon and cedar. Elegant wine with a good length. (1170 views)
Tasted by shafer1994 on 4/5/2023 & rated 91 points: Not as good as a year before. Color and nose fine but on the palate not as strong and powerful than 12 months before - a bit fragile. Still very good but I would not wait any longer… (1218 views)
Tasted by jour-et-nuit on 9/11/2022: This was my last of 12 bottles. After 15 years you taste definitely too much heat/alcohol (15% declared on the back label). Nonetheless I appreciated the wine a lot. (1297 views)
Tasted by jour-et-nuit on 5/7/2022: This is consistently fine C9P. Quite a lot of sediment. The fruit has almost gone now. With 15 % ABV that is now very present, the character has changed a bit (too hot). (1485 views)
Tasted by shafer1994 on 3/3/2022 & rated 93 points: A textbook C9P. Wonderful dark red color. Very ripe nose of a powerful wine, dark berries, some chocolate, wonderful sweetness. Mouthfilling, dominant on the palate, smooth and silky. Nice round and sweet finish. I think it’s in peak drinking window. Some years left. (1423 views)
Tasted by jour-et-nuit on 12/11/2021: Lovely. Consistently good C9P. (1577 views)
Tasted by winepog on 7/25/2021 & rated 90 points: Could taste a touch of sweetness. Very mellow. Not tannic. Various tertiary flavors in here. (1532 views)
Tasted by jour-et-nuit on 6/23/2021: No. 4 of 12. Really full bodied and well structured. Good C9P. (1451 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 4/11/2021 & rated 91 points: Laurel, sweet licorice, chocolate and black olives in the bouquet and on the palate. Good acidity. Completely ready now. (1845 views)
Tasted by jour-et-nuit on 2/22/2021: Very fine CDP. On the second day, much less fruity and too much marmelade and alcohol [15 vol. %]. (1610 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 5/20/2020 & rated 90 points: Medium garnet in color, not clear, some sediment mixed in. This is definitely not filtered. Spiked cherries on the nose, like Luxardo cherries with some burbon on them. Garrigue and cassis on the nose. You can feel the alcohol. You can feel it on the palate too. A bit spicy. Some kirsch. Feels ripe but not over-ripe. It's just a big wine. Acidity is medium plus, tannins are resolved, mouthfeel is velvety. A bit of herbs and garrigue on the palate. It's not totally balanced. There's some heat on the finish. It's just a powerful wine. I'd love to have this in the middle of winter, while skiing. (1912 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 2/5/2020 & rated 92 points: EEE Feb. 2020; 6 whites and 6 reds poured fully blind (@ My place): Beautiful and complex bouquet with chocolate, dark berries, herbs and spices and currants. Same on the palate, sweet licorice and good acidity. Mature and very pleasurable now. (2248 views)
Tasted by bablues on 11/22/2018 & rated 93 points: Bought two of these on release eight years ago. I wanted to find something different to go with Thanksgiving dinner and decided on this. Great choice I believe, as this was a great pairing, that didn't overpower the bird or the sides. Cherries, some spices and light chocolate on the nose. The taste was subtle cherries, strawberries and a hint of black currant. Delicious and strong finish to complete the mouthfeel. One of the best CDPs I;ve had in a while. (2683 views)
Tasted by Renton on 7/29/2018: Opened for the species occasion of Sunday night pizza,

-color: deep garnet body with ruby edges
-Body:by appearance this is a big wine and the 15% abv bears that out on the palate
-Aroma:ripe boozy strawberry and blackberry, red fruits, bramble and garrigue, cassis and creme de cassis liqueur.
-Palate: ripe blackberry, black currant, and cherry with a spicy finish that trails for ages with ripe, sun ripened fruit liqueur. Tannins are medium - very relaxed from years of aging. Acidity is medium to medium plus.

This is by far one of my favorite CdPs that I’ve been aging and it’s very much worth the wait. (3180 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 2/26/2018 & rated 92 points: Weekly tasting group RWP #277; Northern vs Southern Rhone (@ My place): Expressive bouquet with still a lot of cherries, chocolate and good garrigue. On the palate a juicy wine with a firm dose of sweetness and also good acidity. Herbs and spices and tannin with still a good bite. Good length. This wine can be cellared for another 3+ years. (4446 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 2/18/2018 & rated 91 points: Very spicy, bacon nose, sandalwood... Delicious ripe strawberries, great acidity, super delicious tannin, a hint of overripe... (4391 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 8/6/2017 & rated 93 points: This delicious CNdP has aged minimally in the last six years. Decanted. Clear, medium (+) ruby with some garnet on the rim. Thick, viscous dark legs. The nose is clean, with medium (+) aromas of red fruit, black fruit and dried herbs. The palate is dry but fruit-laden. The oak is unobtrusive. Medium to medium (+) plus acidity, tannins and alcohol (then label actually says 15%), with everything very well integrated. Full bodied, with medium plus flavor intensity and great length on the finish. It is probably at - or close to - its peak, but with at least another five years and probably more to go. (4895 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 6/30/2017 & rated 86 points: Dinner with Edson (Maybeck): Nice aromatic nose with plenty of spice, pepper; palate is dense for Grenache, high alcohol, a little syrupy, cherry syrup; medium finish. A bit too ripe for me. 86-87 (5057 views)
Tasted by strijbosmh on 5/2/2017 & rated 92 points: Consistent with previous tasting. Wonderful CndP nose with some bell pepper, spices, liquorice and fennel. Similar tasting profile with grenache performing very well in this blend. Prime drinking now. (3923 views)
Tasted by Jeff W on 4/3/2017: This is a heavyweight, but one with style and grace, more Ali than Tyson. It's delicious, in a take-no-prisoners Chateauneuf way, and surprisingly refreshing with good acidic backbone. Even more surpising, when I checked the label it showed 15%, but that is certainly well concealed. vg (2567 views)
Tasted by jeffal66 on 2/27/2017 & rated 92 points: Extracted, New World-style effort. The elements are there: spice, dark fruit, herbs, menthol, blood/mercury...and in full force. Long finish, great intensity and good acidity. Tannins hanging in there. Wish I had another bottle, would like to revisit in 2-3 years. (3352 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 2/15/2017 & rated 92 points: In the bouquet and on the palate beautifully ripe dark forest fruits, garrigue, sweet spices, sweet fruits and good acidity. Mild acidity and tannin. Just a delicious wine which drinks lovely now and will still be a pleasure in the early 2020's. (3340 views)
Tasted by vinodolphin on 11/24/2016 & rated 92 points: Excellent with a great smoked Turkey Dinner. (2481 views)
Tasted by cuffthis on 9/27/2016 & rated 93 points: Cloudy ruby in color with slight bricking at the edges, this wine reveals garrigue, raspberry, cherry cough syrup and spices on the nose. The mouth feel is medium bodied with soft, inviting tannins, minerals, white flowers and hints of iron. The finish is perfectly balanced as the fruits, minerals, acidity and softening tannins are beautifully integrated.

Purchased for $40US, this wine is drinking ideally now and still has 5-10 more years of life.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
