Tasted by markcic on 10/25/2015 & rated 88 points: We PNP'd through a soiree, dark fruit on the nose, dark berries and licorice on the palate, a decent finish. Easy drinking Rhone, good QPR. (2451 views)
Tasted by vectrex on 12/27/2014 & rated 88 points: last bottle from a sale (12euro). wouldn't buy it for normal price, enough other interesting rhones for better price/quality.

liquorice, garrigues, berries, bit of tannins left. nice rhone. (2758 views)
Tasted by DarinC on 8/9/2014 & rated 85 points: Murky, tired, aromas and flavors of licorice, barnyard, macerated cherries and red plums, traces of herbs. Medium bodied with a few gritty tannins on the finish that mellow somewhat with air. Inexpensive, but not interesting. Drink soon. (3092 views)
Tasted by vectrex on 4/1/2014 & rated 89 points: Liquorice, alcohol in the nose.
Garrigue, spice, sigarebox, little bit cherrie, and some tannins.

Not much fruit. Finish is quite long. Still going strong. (3415 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 11/16/2013 & rated 91 points: Another rock solid performance by an insane value from the Rhone; a little earthy diaper reminiscent of Burgundy on the nose along with red fruit that has rounded with some bottle age from the hard red Grenache fruit of its youth, the classic La Vieille Julienne meatiness was there too; on the palate the wine is still so fresh though the tannins have softened leaving a silky impression, some sweet tart fruit and the great acidity entice you to keep coming back for more- the bottle was gone so fast; poured double blind for a friend who initially went to Burgundy from the nose then finished on Chateauneuf after tasting it- I could not have agreed with him more! (3893 views)
Tasted by Joegish on 2/7/2013 & rated 86 points: meh. Tannic, little fruit even or complexity even after a 2 hr decant. Bummed that I have more. Good for cooking or if you have a wine fantasy that includes drinking plonk. Nothing offensive....just nothing special to remember or that would bring me back for more. (3047 views)
Tasted by jlouderb on 1/13/2013 & rated 90 points: drinking really well right now.. Very CdP - ish (2534 views)
Tasted by madflyfisher on 9/3/2012: Tested this one in my eternal search for upper-end CdR's that still carry a reasonable price tag. In the glass a very transparent colour, very beautiful almost Burgundian. On the nose rather tight in the beginning (not decanted). After a while opening up a bit with herbs, liquorish an some pepper. A hint of forest leaves in decay too. On the palate the nose impressions came through directly, although with the liquorish dominating quite a bit. Firm tannins made this a very good and allround food wine. And it will certainly have some years of celler life left in it. For sure a very well made wine, and quite refined for a CdR. (2521 views)
Tasted by Atwellian on 5/10/2012 & rated 90 points: Excellent again. Buy more. (2490 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 3/11/2012 & rated 91 points: Some nice Old World Wines (St. Paul): Popped and poured and improved over 15 minutes. Floral, berries, earth, minerals and spices. Up front had a woody quality but after some air it went away and was a beautiful wine. This will improve over the next five years. 91+ (3376 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 3/9/2012 & rated 91 points: Utterly beautiful CdR that overdelivers every time I have it. Very Burgundian in its elegance and the ability to provide dark fruit with such great acidity. Think of it as a spicier Gevrey Chambertin. Went surprisingly well with the dry-aged, bone-in ribeye that was done almost Pittsburgh style. (2019 views)
Tasted by cbero on 12/8/2011: Still can't get over the value for the price. What a pleasure to drink! (3023 views)
Tasted by Rogersworthe on 11/15/2011 & rated 89 points: Very good wine, especially for the price. (2244 views)
Tasted by BrunelloBob on 10/23/2011 & rated 89 points: Some nice, old world funk on the front end gives way to some really pleasant fruit.
Drink up on Day 1, this loses something overnight. (2194 views)
Tasted by mmcdds on 10/8/2011 & rated 92 points: Found the nose to be abit reticent, but the palate was a whooole nother story. This was med bodied and bursting with palate coating red fruit and cassis with underlying licorice, leather and garrigue. The fairly firm , chalky, tannic finish was just abit clipped, but all-in-all this was an outstanding cdr that could easily be mistaken for a CdP. This wine has one of the best qpr that I've had in awhile. (2150 views)
Tasted by BrunelloBob on 8/29/2011 & rated 89 points: No notes, but this was Good.
Hurricane Irene Bottle, lost power.
Maybe better on Day 1 (2326 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 7/27/2011 & rated 91 points: Last bottle and, as often the case, the best so far. This has really benefitted from bottle age, so that it showed for all the world like a baby CDP. The nose was a bit awkward on first pour, showing a whiff of glycerol that overlaid the entire bouquet. However, with time, it settled down into a perfumy Grenache-led melange of sweet flowery accents - some lavender and marigold here - along with ripe red cherries and berries, some earth, a bit of smoked meat and, finally, a little dose of stony mineral. Very nice. Palate was fresh, open-knit and tasty, with a layer of savoury earth, smoke and mineral notes underpinning a mouthful of dark cherries, berries and maybe plums. There was a bit of alcohol swirling around, but otherwise the balance was very nice, with lots of food-friendly acidity bolstering the rich flavours. There was nice persistence on the finish too, which lingered in the mouth with notes of bramble, spice and earth. I thought there was a lovely clarity and focus for a wine of this level, and the wine went just beautifully with a simply done rib-eye steak. From 70-year old wines just across the road from the Domaine's CDP holdings, and it showed on the quality of the wine. This could go on aging effortlessly for many years' yet - one of the best value CdRs on the market. (2407 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 5/21/2011 & rated 90 points: Dinner at Chez l'Ami Jean (Chez l'Ami Jean, Rue Malar, Paris): This was a no-brainer when we saw it on the list for a good price. From a patch of 70 yr-old vines just across the road from CdP, it was a great value food wine as always. The nose showed some gentle spice, wild herbs, stony mineral and dark cherries. A bit reserved even after a splashy decanting, but nice. The palate was somewhat better. Closer to CdP than CdR, it showed plenty of depth in its dark cherry flavours, along with nicely fresh, integrated acidity and fine tannins. Touches of stone and dark fruit carried it into a nicely lengthy finish. Nothing showy, but very pleasing, and fantastic with the brilliant duck magret that we had as our main. (2811 views)
Tasted by bullmrkt on 4/26/2011 & rated 89 points: Somewhat non-descript nose of Grenache fruit and a touch of barnyard. Dark fruits and spices on the palate and still a smidge tight, with a touch of heat on the finish. Good now but will improve over the next few years. (2626 views)
Tasted by Gunman on 4/19/2011: Very dark and full. Black and dusty. Too much for roast chicken. Not feeling it tonight; too much chaos in the house, and too much complexity to ponder. Another bottle left to contemplate in the future.

Almost hope I don't love the second bottle like I did a recent Lirac; first bottle reaction was "meh," second bottle hit me with a beautiful expression of fruit and structure. Loved it; and of course it's sold out everywhere. (2702 views)
Tasted by Atwellian on 4/16/2011 & rated 89 points: Deep red and spicy.Currants, dusty earth. A pleasant quaff. (2638 views)
Tasted by Atwellian on 4/13/2011 & rated 90 points: I got flint, black fruit, and a little licorice. Attractive deep purple color. Very good red rhone blend. I couldn't identify the grape varieties by taste so I went to their website: Mainly from old Grenache with various shares of Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault. Aged in foudres. Very tasty and excellent QPR. Good Balance and depth. A friendly and open wine. Ready to drink now. (2719 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 12/2/2010 & rated 90 points: Poured through a Vinturi. Cherry and spice on the nose. Strong cherry and red fruit on the palate with a smooth but decent length finish. Nice value. (3077 views)
Tasted by 100pp on 11/15/2010 & rated 90 points: Minerals, tar, meat and earthy notes with round tannins. Delicate feminine style. Easy drinking. Enough complexity to make you want to finish the bottle. (3142 views)
Tasted by philhamelin on 6/1/2010: Black fruit splattered on an old wood wall. Spicy tannins, and a hemp-type herbal note. Rocks and fresh meat. Big and full and despite all that, remarkably easy drinking. This wine runs up against the wall that is the French appellation controllé, as it takes the normally simple and tasty Côtes du Rhône genre, and gives it magnitude and complexity. Carafe one hour before serving. Food pairing: lamb chops with mustard and herbs. (3281 views)

Over the last decade, Jean-Paul Daumen, proprietor/winemaker at Domaine de la Vieille Julienne, has emerged as one of France’s most compelling wine producers. He is a driven man that will sacrifice anything for quality in his wines. For example, in the rain soaked 2002 vintage he harvested only 50% of the crop, and then rejected half of that. One-fourth of a crop does not make economic sense, but Jean-Paul has his eye on a much longer-term goal. All his wines are labours of love.

Jean-Paul farms 10 hectares in Northern Chateauneuf-du-Pape and 5 hectares in Cotes du Rhone “lieu-dit Clavin” for Vieille Julienne, including the ancient vines his family planted at the turn of the century– all biodynamically. Daumen’s winemaking philosophies are remarkably simple – old vines, tiny yields of around 20 hectoliters per hectare, no SO2 during vinification, aging in neutral tanks or wood, and bottling without fining or filtration — and they combine to give Vieille Julienne’s wines their distinctive character.

“I strive to find the best practices rather than set myself a goal in terms of a finished product. All of my decisions are made for the future. What motivates me is to install our wines in the long run, even if the path is longer, more complicated and difficult.

We have the distinction of being located exclusively on terraces in the northern part of the appellation Châteauneuf du Pape and this site provides freshness, balance, depth and minerality naturally- from there one must understand and respect the context of the vintage. This is important if one seeks the right balance.” -Jean-Paul Daumen

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
