Community Tasting Notes (average 92.2 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 83 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by oldwines on 2/24/2024 & rated 95 points: This was decanted at 4:30pm and tasted from 6pm through 10pm. This is a pure Cali version of Côte-Rôtie. 92% Syrah, 8% Viognier, 14.4% ABV, aged in a quarter once used barrels and the rest 2-5 year old barrels. Remarkably youthful with zero bricking and no oxidation at all. Wonderfully fresh, plush and richly fruited. Also, floral, earthy, minerally and meaty. Great balance and bright acidity, this was best in the 1-2 hours after starting to taste it, so a 2 hour decant seems just about right. Red and black ripe fruit galore, but not over-ripe or overdone. So velvety smooth on the palate and very long on the finish. Delicious with grilled steaks. (255 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 5/16/2020 & rated 94 points: I was really a bit surprised at the depth, youthfulness and complexity of this. Excellent nose of dark red and black fruit and stony minerals. Seriously enticing and delicious. Palate was still quite primary and has red and black fruit, nice minerality... Openned up nicely in the first hour+ in the decanter layered with earthy elements and good texture. Great with grilled steaks. (1841 views)
Tasted by Colorado Native 3G on 2/4/2020 & rated 92 points: Delicious, smooth tannins, lingering finish, mature complexity. If stored well, another year easily. Super easy to drink. (1207 views)
Tasted by bbmd10 on 8/27/2019: Rxcellent (1369 views)
Tasted by casjf on 7/13/2019 & rated 89 points: Purple color with black plum flavors. Needs to breathe for an hour. (1366 views)
Tasted by pswe on 1/26/2019 & rated 93 points: This was my last one... Will be remembered as one of the best reds. A very enjoyable wine with a well matured complexity. Lucky you still having it in your cellars, but don't keep them too long, at prime right now. (1472 views)
Tasted by casjf on 12/14/2018 & rated 93 points: Robust wine that stood up to French cut lamb chops with broccoli and baked potatoes with garlic, shallots, mushroom, fennel and olive oil. Deep purple. Strawberry & anise flavors. (960 views)
Tasted by ajfret01 on 10/27/2018: Really excellent. Smooth tannins with a great mouth feel. Probably not a lot more years behind it. (1088 views)
Tasted by ChrisWagner on 7/3/2017 & rated 94 points: Probably one of the most enjoyable wines I've ever had. This is drinking optimally now.

Nose:
Blueberries, plum, a floral note, river rocks, lightly a milk chocolate scent.

Palate: graphite, blueberry liqueur, earthiness.

Color: dark garnet (1542 views)
Tasted by jcr2000 on 1/30/2017 & rated 95 points: Double-decanted 2 hours before drinking. First glass pleasant and well-balanced and then....the wine exploded with flavor and energy. Loads of primary fruit backed up with plenty of acidity and refined tanins. Nice extended finish. One of my first experiences with Ridge. If this is the quality in their base-level wines, I can't wait to expand my inventory and progress up in their offering. (1832 views)
Tasted by pswe on 9/3/2016 & rated 93 points: Paired this with a south african Bordeaux blend from the same vintage. Ridge came out as a very good wine. Perfectly aged right now with still some fruit in the first impressions both in the nose and mouth. Not too far away in style from its French Rhone valley cousins, would probably not guess on America if blind tasting. Very well balanced overall and taste is lasting very very long. Survives well with grilled meat and sauce Bearnaise, but is very nice also on its own. Doubt it will gain much from furhter ageing, it is already top level. (1797 views)
Tasted by b.w_anderson on 7/2/2016 & rated 96 points: Exquisite, deep vegetal nose. Fat, luscious mouth. Spice and broad fruit. Perfectly aged. (1813 views)
Tasted by moxielady on 5/10/2016 & rated 92 points: Blackberry jam, cherry, dark fruit, smooth and drinking well now (1863 views)
Tasted by kosinski on 4/1/2016: Aroma: musky black berry, loam and roasted meat.
Palate: jammy black fruits with grippy tannins and some herbaceous and earthy notes. Rich mouthfeel and body. Moderate structure and low acidity. Good but not outstanding. Drink over the next two years. (1465 views)
Tasted by phandel on 11/24/2015: This was really tasty! Funky at first, but 15 min of air cleared that up. (1511 views)
Tasted by fuzzy Phil on 9/26/2015 & rated 89 points: Raspberry and cedar nose. Tart cherry and raspberry on the tongue. No tannins. Very good, but starting on the downhill. A bit of oxidized flavors. (1456 views)
Tasted by Ecoenophile on 8/7/2015 & rated 92 points: PnP Nose: white pepper, dark purple fruit - rich, almost black licorice qnd a hint of cut cedar wood. Palate: less complex than the nose. Plum, blackberry and tart cherry. Medium body helps carry a fairly long finish with a pleasant tartness. No tannins. (1417 views)
Tasted by OliverHM on 9/21/2014: Very complex, smooth, big, low acidity...really good, not sure I taste all of the fruit, but there is a jamminess. Drank the first bottle in 2011, so glad we waited a bit longer for this bottle. Ridge is the best! (2163 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 6/27/2014: Drinking well, with very fine tannin and a silky mouthfeel. Rich and full-bodied. Blackberry and blueberry, a bit of gaminess. Not bad. (2155 views)
Tasted by Skamanrev on 5/18/2014: With tri tip roast (1376 views)
Tasted by jwells on 3/31/2014 & rated 92 points: Dark ruby color. Full body. Blueberry, herbs, peppery heat on a long finish. (2061 views)
Tasted by jeffal66 on 12/31/2013 & rated 89 points: I just don't know. Did my palate shift since I visited the winery? This was a marked improvement over my first bottle but it never repeated that initial impression. Jammy and extracted and not overly dynamic or notable. Rich and big. I love Ridge but this one left my orbit. Win some, lose some. (2214 views)
Tasted by tautlinehitch on 10/16/2013 & rated 93 points: Don't have detailed notes - we drank this a day or three ago. This is a bottle I bought at a wine road event two years ago. It was a standout then and it's spectacular now - big but not overblown, serious but not unrewarding. Great complexity in the nose and on the palate. Sure wish I had bought more. (2294 views)
Tasted by ajfret01 on 9/29/2013: Took about an hour and a half to open up, with a great gaminess and meatiness. This is really good right now! (1860 views)
Tasted by WineCPA on 8/15/2013 & rated 93 points: Excellent! Nose of dark fruit, and tar continues on for a spicy finish. Intense, but not coming in hot. Moderate tannins give it the ability to age a bit. Next in 2014-2015. (1143 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
