Tasted by Mooserun on 9/19/2015 & rated 89 points: Thought we waited too long to open this bottle based on the drink dates. We were very pleasantly surprised! We opened & decanted for about an hour. Very smooth. (3570 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 8/10/2013: Saturday Night Get Together Non-Blind (Bin 75): Dark purple to the rim; overripe dark berry and a little vanilla on the nose; palate is taut and tangy dark fruit which salvages the wine; decent. (6345 views)
Tasted by Johnny C NYC on 6/14/2013 & rated 88 points: Agreeable red - pleasant and simple. 50/5/12/14/7 (6010 views)
Tasted by dsgris on 5/14/2013 & rated 92 points: Inky dark purple, ripe cherries, iodine. Dusty dry, medium fruit, tart lemon zest, pomegranate, cherry. Light body with fresh mouthfeel, nice acid, light tannin balance. Good food wine. Much better on night two, just a little initial bitter detracts out of the gate, but diminishes and is not offensive. It keeps getting better, a little pine and iodine tonight with a hint Brett that is small enough to give more complexity. Further reasons to not drink before it's time. A couple more years in this puppy. (6260 views)
Tasted by Jurgens on 5/9/2013 & rated 77 points: Hmm. Disapointtet. (6100 views)
Tasted by SMagowan on 9/23/2012 & rated 91 points: Arrrrrrrrrrrrgh! And I'm not just saying that because we've just passed National Pirate Day. I should have checked my earlier notes. I had a tag on this where I wrote drink by 2012. It needs 2 more years as I suggested in a previous note. Opened and let breathe for 1/2 hour on day one with no decant. It started out wicked, wicked hot (that is Boston-based wine lingo for my friends in Cali). After an hour it had smoothed to nice notes of cherry-flavored liquorice, tobacco, wet dirt and light oak. BUT, on Day Two, my word, the thing had changed. It had an expressive finish, a bit of lemon, flower notes and just a tiny hint of oak and menthol. It was really wonderful and easily a 91-92. And also, unfortunately, my last bottle. I'll be on the look out for more. (4382 views)
Tasted by dexwine on 9/11/2012 & rated 89 points: The last bottle. Tannins have melted away, the flavors are still expressive and deep. Great mid palette and a lingering finish. A great $15 bottle. (2686 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 9/3/2012 & rated 91 points: Much better tasting than our previous two bottles and more like the wine we tasted and enjoyed at the Vietti winery. There was a richness, depth, and clarity here of dark plums and cherries. (2453 views)
Tasted by krvw on 7/19/2012 & rated 90 points: Lovely berry fruit, with cedar notes, moderate tannins, and food happy acidity. (2732 views)
Tasted by MindMuse on 2/12/2012 & rated 90 points: Such a tasty Barbera, and alas my final one of this. Great nose with clove, red cherry, roasted thyme, violets, cardamon. Good body with lots of verve on the palate carrying long bright cherry/berry flavor, touches of earth and spice. A bit of sweet tannins hold it together on the back end. Day 1 89+, Day 2 90. (3305 views)
Tasted by SMagowan on 12/26/2011 & rated 89 points: Boisterous nose of black cherry and fruit; very fruity tasting with an alchohol kick. I think this is still young and would benefit from 2 - 3 years in the cellar. (3149 views)
Tasted by dthompson on 11/24/2011 & rated 90 points: Very nice Barbera. Miles ahead of the 2008, 2009. Full bodied. (3525 views)
Tasted by krvw on 11/5/2011 & rated 89 points: Excellent forest berry fruit flavors and acidity. (4363 views)
Tasted by dexwine on 9/27/2011 & rated 89 points: A suave and polished Barbera. Decanted. Black fruits and graphite with a nice floral note. Smooth, slightly rich, with similar flavors that are nicely delineated and polished very light chalky tannins that coat the mouth and add structure and good lift that adds freshness. With a little time it all gets deeper, black currants and just a hint of rhubarb emerge, and the wine fleshes out a bit. This is great stuff. I just bought 6 bottles and will take a little time with this. (4102 views)
Tasted by Bobc7had on 8/19/2011 & rated 89 points: Drinking beautifully. (4208 views)
Tasted by djpo on 8/14/2011 & rated 89 points: Consistent with past bottles - wish I had more. (4265 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 8/9/2011 & rated 89 points: Why don't I back the truck up on these? Simply delicious, inexpensive barbera that goes great with food (pasta, pizza, cheeses) and is gulpable on its own. Drink over the next 2 years. (4459 views)
Tasted by wineduggery on 7/25/2011: The 07 is still the gold standard for Barbera. Great concentration and complexity. Won't rate again. I wish this wasn't my last bottle! (4691 views)
Tasted by fredb on 7/13/2011: Dark red color with purple hints. Currant, licorice, plum, and spice on the nose. Sweet licorice and currant notes with a bay and lavender spice element that leads into a medium finish with some tobacco elements. A pretty, easy-going wine that complements cuisine inspired by Northern Italy. Drink. (4396 views)
Tasted by sleepyhaus on 7/6/2011: Not very impressive. Soft and rather boring. (4531 views)
Tasted by djpo on 5/22/2011 & rated 91 points: No decant - pop and pour:
Starts with strawberry
Builds to red vine twizzler (in a good way)
Finish with apricot, graphite, lychee, top of pineapple and then prune, plum (about an hour in) and now fig
Nice balance for cheese and tomato in lasagna
Great legs (4758 views)
Tasted by cjsadler on 4/5/2011 & rated 90 points: Really nice food-friendly barbera. Gained some complexity after sitting for awhile. (5170 views)
Tasted by wineduggery on 4/4/2011 & rated 90 points: My favorite Barbera. Surprisingly complex. Dark fruits and spice with good, crisp acidity. I can see why Vietti Barberas are considered some of the best. Good QPR too. (5462 views)
Tasted by cadams on 3/25/2011 & rated 85 points: Meaty nose with a little spice. Muted fruit and lots of acid. Good food wine but not really complex or interesting. (5241 views)
Tasted by RogerG on 2/4/2011: Deep color, good balance and full flavors (262 views)

Barbera

Varietal character (Appellation America)
Varietal character (Wikipedia German)
Varietal character (Wikipedia English)
Barbera is a red wine variety, originally from Italy, which is best known as the second-most important Piedmontese variety after Nebbiolo. The wines made of this grape are mainly the everyday drinking wines of the region. The main appellations producing Barbera are Asti and Alba.

Barbera - The most widely grown red wine grape of Piedmont and Southern Lombardy, most famously around the towns of Asti and Alba, and Pavia. The wines of Barbera were once simply "what you drank while waiting for the Barolo to be ready." With a new generation of wine makers, this is no longer the case. The wines are now meticulously vinified, aged Barbera gets the name "Barbera Superiore" (Superior Barbera), sometimes aged in French barrique becoming "Barbera Barricato", and intended for the international market. The wine has bright cherry fruit, a very dark color, and a food-friendly acidity.
