Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 38 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by grafstrb on 3/25/2019: -- decanted 45 min. before initial taste --
-- tasted non-blind over a couple hours --

NOSE: very light oak; rich red/purple fruit mix; hint of smoky leather.

BODY: some sediment present; black-violet-garnet color of great depth, with hardly any bricking, if any; full bodied.

TASTE: very rich red/purple-fruited Syrah; still some drying tannin; alcohol clearly stands-out; medium acidity; somewhat loose; paired nicely with steak; Drink Now. gut impression score: high 80s. (870 views)
Tasted by bromion on 9/24/2017 & rated 91 points: Peak drinking. (989 views)
Tasted by GrapeScott on 9/13/2016 & rated 92 points: Wow, what a vibrant wine. This is head and shoulders above a Rhys Horseshoe from the same vintage I had earlier in the night. Bright acidity, with a lovely floral character reminiscent of a Cote Rotie, with some serious structure and tannins on the back end. I was worried this might be over the hill but this is still on the upslope of its growth. First Tercero I have had in many years, but this reminds me that these are well-made wines that fly under the radar. (1799 views)
Tasted by bromion on 3/6/2016 & rated 92 points: Loved this wine, and Tercero Syrah in general. (1396 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 12/17/2014 & rated 92 points: This bottle really delivered!!! (1536 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 4/12/2014: Very dark crimson and purple, nearly opaque. This wine is a glass stainer and as it swirls in the glass the legs are noticeably maroon. Aromas of bright red berries radiant from the glass. Palate is driven by a big shot of minerals on the attack followed by smokey stems. Fruit flavors round it out with tart raspberry and ripe blackberry. Medium plus finish with a slight ash element. (1473 views)
Tasted by stubbie999 on 4/9/2014: Seems to have plateaued in a nice place. Still lots of dark fruit, along with olive, earth and a little funk. Maybe a little softer than it has been, but that's a quibble. The tannins are loosening a bit and there's still plenty of acidity - a pleasure to drink. Really shows its stuff with food. Too bad it's my last one... (1148 views)
Tasted by JavaMonkey on 2/3/2013 & rated 91 points: Bonus bottle, I didn't think I had anymore. Still delicious, blueberry, blackberry, it's a little softer now. Nicely integrated, and there's a little undertone beneath the fruit, not quite herbal, maybe tea. Medium bodied, still a real pleasure to drink. (1699 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 1/19/2013 & rated 92 points: Sorry, can't keep my hands off of this! (1721 views)
Tasted by BobMilton on 12/27/2012 & rated 91 points: Red cherries on the palate. Smooth, though with little Syrah pepper. (1360 views)
Tasted by MattMauldin on 10/20/2012 & rated 92 points: 2nd day notes (overnight under Private Reserve intert gas). Dense purple ruby color, medium bodied. Smoky aromas of black olive, dark fruit, lavender and black tea. Ripe and balanced blue and black fruit flavors with an attractive gliding feel through the mid-palate and finish. Savory mineral and floral highlights throughout- very nicely integrated. Fine grippy tannin and acid with a lingering finish (30+ seconds). Excellent balance and vibrancy- should continue to hold and drink well. (1508 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 8/15/2012 & rated 88 points: Blind Night (Kevin): Black in color. Blackberry and cranberry nose. Tastes of blackberry, blueberry, chared oak, and earth. Soft tannins. Earthy finish. 14.3% alcohol. (1799 views)
Tasted by jeff nowak on 8/15/2012 & rated 89 points: double blind to the group, my bottle. screw cap (!), not decanted. solid, tasty fruit and good balance/composition. good pricing for a single vineyard wine of such notable legacy. a nice quaffer. drink now. (2086 views)
Tasted by PIntag on 7/1/2012: I got a small pour of this right after opening and it seemed quite tight. Unfortunately, when I went back for a second taste, it was all gone! I think this could've used more air. No score. (1196 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 6/30/2012 & rated 88 points: This wasnt pleasant, nose was non-descript -- alchohol, a bit of oak, no fruit to speak of, palate was borderline bad -- again some oak, but astringent, no fruit and therefore alchohol was in the forefront, bitterness on the finish... Based on other notes i may have simply had a bad bottle but didnt seem overtly flawed (1084 views)
Tasted by PIntag on 5/19/2012 & rated 90 points: Santa Barbara County Tasting Trip - Day 2 (Tercero, Scott Cellars, Qupé/Verdad/Ethan, Sides Restuarant) (Los Olivos, CA): Tasting room in Los Olivos. Nose showed a candied fruit quality to it. On the palate, though, it was very dry with nice cherry flavors and some spice. Nice texture as well. (1661 views)
Tasted by MattMauldin on 5/7/2012 & rated 93 points: Tasting room visit with Larry S.- 5/4. Lots going on here. Bitter chocolate, cassis, cracked pepper, blueberry aromatics. All that and more pure fruit on the palate- blue and black. Smooth and round and polished- a pretty wine with fine balance. A full finish with peppery fine tannins. (1296 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 5/2/2012: Jersey Girls Road Trip - A Story by the Chauffeur; 4/27/2012-5/2/2012 (Solvang, CA): Tart dark fruit with a mild pepper and spice mid palate. Excellent finish and chewy tannins. Good BBQ wine, no question. Solid wine. (2429 views)
Tasted by awilliamson4 on 3/8/2012 & rated 91 points: This was my first Tercero from my Berserkerday purchase. I do not think i have ever had such a perfumed syrah. The nose was very complex but had so many floral notes to it, which I was not expecting. I literally smelled it and then had to sit back and say woah, it was that strong (in an interesting way). Also I must cmment on the color of it as it was like an ultra dark violet. On the palate there was very nice dark fruit, bramble, a tiny bit of pepper spice and is very full in the mouth. For sure a winner in terms of this purchase. (1486 views)
Tasted by JavaMonkey on 2/13/2012 & rated 91 points: Same as the last bottle: Straight-ahead Syrah nose with blueberry, blackberry, and a little floral component. Typical Tercero with beautiful fruit, great balance, and some nice depth. Medium-full palate, delicious. (1189 views)
Tasted by PIntag on 2/11/2012 & rated 90 points: I liked the previous bottle so much, I opened this the following day to enjoy with BBQ Brisket! I enjoy this for what it isn't as well for what it is. It is not overoaked and not overextracted, but it is spicy and shows lots of rich fruit. (1211 views)
Tasted by PIntag on 2/10/2012 & rated 90 points: Deep, dark, and chewy with a good spine of tart acidity. I love the flavors and texture of this Syrah. Another winner from Tercero. (1182 views)
Tasted by MattMauldin on 1/15/2012 & rated 92 points: Tasting room visit- 1/15. Meaty aromas of blueberry and cassis. Opulent on the palate with blue & black fruit along with savory notes highlighted with white pepper. Pure flavors with nice balance. Drinks with a nice roundness and fine tannins- finishing full. Pure enjoyment. (1351 views)
Tasted by chadrich on 11/28/2011 & rated 90 points: Delicious easy drinking syrah. Well balanced. (1387 views)
Tasted by JavaMonkey on 10/25/2011 & rated 91 points: Straight-ahead Syrah nose with blueberry, blackberry, and a little floral component. Typical Tercero with beautiful fruit, great balance, and some nice depth. Medium-full palate, delicious. (1364 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Central Coast AVA Wikipedia

Santa Ynez Valley

The Santa Ynez Valley AVA is the largest wine sub-region of Santa Barbara County and has the highest concentration of vineyards. The valley runs from east to west, between the Purisima Hills and the San Rafael Mountains in the north, and the Santa Ynez Mountains in the south. Although the valley is open to the Pacific Ocean in the west, the fact that it is relatively narrow means that limited cool air and fog is funnelled in. Low average rainfall and a very long growing season make the region ideal for quality wine production.

The diverse climates of Santa Ynez Valley mean that a wide array of wines is produced. The cool, western part of the AVA is predominantly planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, accompanied by other aromatic white varieties. Botrytis cinerea (noble rot) is able to flourish here, allowing some outstanding dessert wines to be produced in suitable vintages. Further east, the cooling effect of the ocean is lessened as both vineyard elevation and average temperatures increase. This warmer part of Santa Ynez Valley is more suited to fuller-bodied grape varieties, such as Syrah and Merlot.
more ...s expected, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive, while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhone blends.
