Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 122 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by mleavitt on 6/17/2023 & rated 92 points: Definitively a Chard with some age. Darker yellow in color. Honey and lemon, still a slight floral scent on the nose. Well rounded on the mouth, a bit glycerine. Paired well with a chorizo, corn and scallop dish.

The wine looks yellow gold colored. The legs are fast. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like lemon and honeysuckle. (316 views)
Tasted by Nursing a Hangover on 6/22/2018 & rated 89 points: Pale yellow
Pineapple honey nose, some popcorn
A bit tart but off tilt with heat. 14.8% ABV
Good with a simple chicken dinner (2174 views)
Tasted by Alro on 1/7/2018 & rated 92 points: held up VERY well... (1494 views)
Tasted by Bakeman on 12/31/2017 & rated 89 points: A little tart on the finish. Time to drink this wine. (2122 views)
Tasted by SLDESQ on 12/23/2017 & rated 92 points: Drink now. On the verge of waiting too long. Otherwise, this wine is a staple for what a California Chardonnay should be like. Buttery and smooth. (1896 views)
Tasted by Andrew Hunter on 5/29/2017 & rated 95 points: Stellar. Incredible citrus and apple notes. Great acidity and balance with a great long finish. After just drinking the '07 and regretting waiting too long this bottle was awesome. (2309 views)
Tasted by Nerdy Earth Boy on 4/29/2017 & rated 93 points: This Chard will be missed!! Shaffer Red Shoulder Ranch has taught me in spades that a well produced Chard with a bit of reasonable age can convince you that white wine is absolutely delightful in the right moment. I'm officially a new fan! (1565 views)
Tasted by Nerdy Earth Boy on 4/9/2017 & rated 92 points: Absolutely stellar Cali CHARD from a major quality producer. Buttery fruit forward perfectly well aged. Great experience. (1324 views)
Tasted by lvepicure on 12/11/2015 flawed bottle: Corked (2863 views)
Tasted by kdubler on 9/18/2015: Popped and poured and was an obvious New World Chardonnay from the first whiff. Has great acid and the oak is defiantly in check, but still the ripeness of the fruit makes it obvious what it is. Checks in at 14.8% Alcohol, but with the large fruit profile balances out nicely. Not my style of wine, but very good for what it is. If you are looking for a fruit forward, California Chardonnay, this is a great choice. (2841 views)
Tasted by King JR on 5/25/2015 & rated 92 points: Buttery and smooth. Everyone always loves this wine. The group rating was 92. For me personally there was some astringency on the finish that would lower my rating to 90. Still a really nice wine. (2583 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 5/23/2015 & rated 91 points: Bit oakier than what I like, but bright full bodied and deliciously buttery. (2449 views)
Tasted by King JR on 4/4/2015 & rated 92 points: Everyone loved it. Very full bodied, luscious/creamy, but fresh. Really nice white. (2603 views)
Tasted by mlawren1 on 12/7/2014 & rated 92 points: bit of butter gives way to pineapple and pears. Little oily on the finish. (1641 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/29/2014 & rated 93 points: Medium gold color. PNP, drank 2+ glasses over 2 hours. This bottle was back to where I felt was peak drinking. The nose is focused with good purity, lemons and mineral sharing top billing with light floral elements that emerge after 20-30 minute, melon, light toast. The palate is precise, lemon, lemon oil, mineral, citrus zest, toasted nuts, , excellent depth and energy, intense with just a glint of sweet fruit essence on the mid and late palate. Very, very good. (1618 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 7/5/2014 & rated 91 points: Judith's Over the Hill and Under the Weather Event (Judith's House): Medium gold color. Nose has apple, tropicals, lemon, rich, toast. The palate has finesse, full bodied, lovely fruit, tropical, apple, long finish. This was served a bit too warm or it would have been better. 91+pts. (2527 views)
Tasted by Bbaldinger on 4/4/2014 & rated 92 points: - Yellow gold color with medium forming legs. It's balanced with a medium/full body. Polished texture - Wonderful. Buttery. Oak. A classic (2138 views)
Tasted by pesto on 3/2/2014 & rated 93 points: stunning and delicious. less than 35 - buy (2595 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 2/13/2014 & rated 93 points: Jan's Birthday of "No Particular Significance" (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Medium gold color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over an hour plus. Outstanding bottle. Nose is powerful, lemon, butter, toast, earth, minerality. The palate wow's from the start, lemon, melon, round and viscous, full bodied but not at all heavy, tangy with some citrus zest and minerality, medium plus finish. Reminded me of a fine Puligny-Montrachet. Seemingly at its zenith, yet showing no indications of a decline at present. I would be comfortable holding this another year or two. 93+ to 94pts. (2303 views)
Tasted by kbhiggins on 1/2/2014 & rated 89 points: We noticed some oak and melon on the nose. Rich and full bodied chardonnay with notes of lemon and apple on the body. Drinking pretty nicely right now. (2015 views)
Tasted by West Coast Wine on 12/24/2013 & rated 90 points: Dark Golden color with med legs. Nose of peach/floral and slight oak. Full body and acidity and oak have tapered off leaving a well balanced wine. Fruit is still somewhat bright and has a long finish. Drank slightly below room temp and was just right. Would not hold and drink now. Had another bottle approx. 6 months ago and actually felt like may be declining. (1551 views)
Tasted by JBD on 8/24/2013 & rated 91 points: Oak is fully integrated so that there is no aky taste. Otherwise, this is a very good napa chard and very "typical" (2054 views)
Tasted by TheDarkPrince on 7/20/2013 & rated 93 points: I just wet my pants after this "sex in a bottle" chard. Lots of exotic fruits on the nose. Pineapple and melons to boot.

On the palette, the wine is super viscous and smooth. Melons and grapefruit are very prominent. Extended finish just keeps going. Shafer is always a safe bet in my mind, and represents great quality given the price.

Tasted by King JR on 6/23/2013: Everyone loved it - group of women at Betty's 60th. No rating but likely 90+. (2214 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 6/1/2013 & rated 91 points: Potpourri of Wines (Judith's House): Light medium gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This was typical of recent bottles, showing a creamy, rich style, on the buttery side, full body, moderate oak, citrus, lemon, some apple baked apple pie. As much as I like typically like this, I felt the Montelena was more complex and substantially better tonight. (2871 views)

Chardonnay

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Napa / Sonoma

SONOMA: The Yorkville Highlands AVA, approved in 1998, is located in the southwestern corner of Mendocino County, between Sonoma County's Alexander Valley to the South and Mendocino County!s Anderson Valley to the North. The region is 25 miles long, roughly in the shape of rectangle and bisected by Highway 128 which runs the length of the AVA. The region!s terrain is hilly and forested, with elevations ranging from 1,078 to 2,442 feet above sea level.
The distinguishing features of the Yorkville Highlands AVA are rocky soils with a high gravel content and the climate, which is cooler than Alexander Valley but warmer than Anderson Valley, and significantly cooler at night than the surrounding areas.
