Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 87.3 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by thebonnydooner on 11/7/2013 & rated 86 points: Served cool, but still very soft, almost flabby. Ripe blackberry fruit, a little hot, probably losing steam, drink up. (1956 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 3/29/2013 & rated 88 points: Decent - reasonably large scaled but balanced - not overly complex and to be honest was not thought about much as it was glugged down. (2173 views)
Tasted by wormfarmer on 12/16/2012 & rated 84 points: Decanted, began drinking an hour later. Decent mouthfeel, but mostly flat. The wine didn't taste spent, burnt, or quite past its prime -- I'd guess in a way it's actually at peak. Still, this is either evidence for the prosecution against the hot 2007 vintage or (for the pro-2007 crowd) simply evidence that St. Siffrein didn't have the stuffing to make the year sing, at least at the Villages level. 90 minutes in the heat began to show; Two hours in it began to improve a bit; took a final sip five hours in and the heat had dissipated somewhat, and the wine had smoothed out. Was it good at that point? I'm not sure I'd say so -- but if I had a bottle left, I'd open it up way early just to see. (2370 views)
Tasted by bcc725 on 9/30/2012: True to vintage - RIPE. Any garrigue that was there was drowned out by the heat of the vintage. Won't judge the the maker by one bottle, but it did come off as a bit modern in style....which is not exactly what I'm looking for from Rhone. (2667 views)
Tasted by Easter Everywhere on 6/1/2012 & rated 88 points: Soft, round, chocolate, fruit, nice (2257 views)
Tasted by Easter Everywhere on 3/1/2012 & rated 88 points: Delicious (620 views)
Tasted by wormfarmer on 2/13/2012 & rated 86 points: Unmistakable smoke, in a good way. Not wildly interesting beyond that -- medium-bodied, some inexpressive purple fruit. Fine for the price, but not a wild steal. I've so loved Siffrein's upper-tier stuff that I think I expected more.... (1187 views)
Tasted by Phredd on 9/26/2011 & rated 88 points: Very dark purple red with a touch of thinning at the rim and fairly viscous, the nose is blackberry reduction, with smoke and Cajun spice. The palate has less fruit than the nose, but it is enough, and the fruit is lighter, both raspberry and blackberry. The tannin is present, but smooth and not overpowering, and the finish gives way to meat and more of the spice. Unfortunately, the finish also gives way to a some bitterness which is not terribly appealing, but which at least softens with additional air time. Food also helps. Despite this minor flaw, though, this remains a very good wine for the $12 price point. (1544 views)
Tasted by Zonk on 9/19/2011 & rated 87 points: decent CdR, but wouldn't seek it out. Smoky and still a bit tight (for a 2007). probabluy would have improved with air. (1491 views)
Tasted by Zonk on 6/24/2011 & rated 87 points: Some decent notes of smoke and spice as it opened up.decent QPR, nice food wine. in this price range I vastly prefer the St Cosme CDR. Going to edit this since I left in the fridge for 2 days. By day 3 this was more interesting with some olive tapenade and blackberry over crushed rock (sorry for the Rimmerman hyperbole). probably deserves an extra 2 points. if you have this give it a lot of air or more time in the bottle. Little surprising from a 4 year old basic CDR for me. (1441 views)
Tasted by Geoffrey Carter on 3/5/2011 & rated 88 points: Let it open up. Good flavors of smoke, red meat and spice. (1580 views)
Tasted by pxstone on 3/4/2011 & rated 86 points: Licorice comes through more prevalent than previous tastings. Fruit forward, good acidity , but this bottle doesn't seem as balanced as earlier notes imply. (1561 views)
Tasted by Phredd on 2/12/2011 & rated 89 points: No detailed notes, but this was popped and poured with a sausage dinner and fit the bill perfectly. Reasonably dark with a touch of purple, the nose was very characteristic of a CdR, with good spicy character over a red and black fruit base. The palate was not overly complex, but continued the good, broad CdR meaty, spicy, fruity goodness. Overall, this was a very nice $12 wine. After completely panning the Graveirette offering from Garagiste, this Garagiste wine was really quite nice and an excellent QPR. (1550 views)
Tasted by acox on 1/5/2011: Cherry, smoke, meaty, with good acid and medium body. Terrific QPR. (1700 views)
Tasted by Easter Everywhere on 12/1/2010: Great nose, minerals, red fruit, silky palate, great body, but finishes w/harsh, bitter tannin (321 views)
Tasted by Brian Love on 11/22/2010 & rated 87 points: Good value bit of funk on nose and sweet red fruit. Slight pepper and tart/acid backbone. Medium finish. (1868 views)
Tasted by JasonNYC1 on 11/21/2010: Pleasant simple CdR...well worth it. (1958 views)

Garagiste (3/26/2010)
(SIFFREIN Cotes du Rhone Villages) 2007 Rhone Dear Friends, This just came across the wire and it was a pleasant surprise. After nearly a dozen bottles of this wine since last summer, the no-frills/honest approach Saint-Siffrein has captured is certain to brighten your summer picnic plans and beyond. It bursts from the glass with freshness and even I can’t deny their 2007 Cotes du Rhone Villages would challenge many at twice the price (Chateauneuf-du-Pape included). While I certainly admire their 2008s (as noted a few days ago – I’m in the minority on 2008), the 2007 vintage excelled at the lower levels and it elevated a relatively unheralded series of Cotes du Rhone wines into a quality league that has only come around a handful of times since the 1970s. At their current prices, common sense rings the wine bargain buzzer and it’s tough to have enough wine like this in your cellar. The result of a superlative growing season and selection – this is Saint-Siffrein’s top Cotes du Rhone, given the “Villages” designation - the remainder is sold off or bottled as regular Cotes du Rhone. For (at this very late stage of the 2007 game), your Tuesday night with frozen pizza (or something more adventurous) will thank you. In addition, this wine would have no problem as the star of an important occasion meal – it’s that versatile. Made entirely by hand, this is a 2007 I have no trouble recommending as the alcohol is in check and the fruit and terroir are the focus. With most “Villages” designated CdR’s from 2007 in the $15-18 range, this wine is a steal by comparison: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for no-nonsense and confident reflection of the Southern Rhone (it’s also a terrific value) ONE SHIPMENT ONLY directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance: 2007 Domaine de Saint Siffrein “Cotes du Rhone Villages” - FIRST COME FRIST SERVED at this price up to 36/person until we run out To order: niki@garagistewine.com This wine is set to depart the cave – it will arrive in the late spring (please check OARS for local pick up in mid-May). Domaine de Saint Siffrein

Saint Siffrein was founded in 1880 and since then successive generations have been increasing its profile and quality, and for the last thirty years it has been run along organic lines they will be certified organic this year. Domaine founder Siffrein Chastan’s great, great grandson Cyril Chastan took over the reins from his father Claude in 2005 and, as has often been the case in these parts, is now taking this estate to new levels by combining the best of tradition with a fresh approach and modern techniques. The domaine now covers 20 hectares, 15 hectares of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, mostly surrounding the beautifully situated property Mont Ventoux a distant view as one walks out of the winery door.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

Côtes du Rhône Villages

Côtes-du-Rhône Villages is a French wine Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in the southern Rhône wine region of France. Red, white and rosé wine are all produced within the appellation. The quality is superior to the generic Côtes-du-Rhône AOC, but below more specific appellations such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC and Vacqueyras AOC. Côtes-du-Rhône Villages is the second largest appellation in the Rhône, only surpassed in size by Côtes-du-Rhône AOC.
