Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 70 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Verb on 1/9/2021 & rated 94 points: very similar to my last tasting note - nose of mature dark fruit, graphite, and white flowers - full rich mouth of mature black fruits, spice (not sure exactly which), soft ripe tannins, and fresh acidity - full bodied, but not alcoholic - not a particularly long finish, but long enough to remember the charm of this fully mature Toro wine - tasted alongside a 2002 Alion: the Alion was smoother and easier to drink, but the Pintia was much more interesting, and better balanced - a beautiful mature Spanish tempranillo (1501 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 10/4/2020 & rated 93 points: Bachelor Party in Hilton Suite. Drank over 1.5 hours. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Sediments at end of bottle.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of earth, blackberries, black cherry liqueur, black plums, underlying redcurrant, hint of mushrooms with more air. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (14.5%), rich luxurious integrated high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of mushroomy dark warm moist earth, blackberries, black cherries, black plums, dark spices, and black tea leaves with more air. Long finish.
Very good quality. The finest and oldest Toro I have had so far. Big but lovely. Prime time drinking. (1705 views)
Tasted by Verb on 9/30/2020 & rated 94 points: a beautiful wine - the last tasting note was from 2013 - I'm sure it was great then, but the wine has added an elegance that only comes with maturity - Toro and elegance?? you need to give it more time to see that evolution - nose of mature dark fruit, graphite, and white flowers - full rich mouth of mature black fruits, spice (not sure exactly which), soft ripe tannins, and fresh acidity - full bodied, but not alcoholic - not a particularly long finish, but long enough to remember the charm of this fully mature wine (1456 views)
Tasted by theoakkermans on 10/5/2013 & rated 93 points: Dik zwart fruit, aarde, cederhout, koffie in de geur.
Mooie concentratie, filmend, het fruit uit de geur, bitterheid van espresso, mooie taninnes met sappige zuren en een heerlijke lange sexy afdronk. Wat een wijn! (8839 views)
Tasted by kammer on 12/24/2012 & rated 93 points: really drinkable now - matured... (9877 views)

Tasted by alba_br on 5/8/2012 & rated 92 points: Muito bom! (9055 views)
Tasted by GrandeSerataFuori on 4/12/2012 & rated 92 points: Some of the nicest tannins I've ever had. Still rich and full of life. Possibly peaking now. Great straight from the bottle, no decanting. Black currant and tea leaves. We all liked this, but Summer went nuts over it. (3592 views)
Tasted by ZorroCT on 3/30/2012 & rated 92 points: Dark dark color. Black cherries, tobacco, wood (maybe cedar) and a touch of vanilla. Nice mouth feel. Tannins actually picked up as the wine opened and wine became dry. (3223 views)
Tasted by Jason Millar on 1/6/2012: Sultry, grainy and a bit volatile if we're being technical. Has a sort of Turkish bazaar feel to it. Punchy but short, this has noticeable sweet American oak and is lacking in balance or finesse. I don't think there would be much fuss about this wine if it was served blind. It's very Toro though. (2460 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 1/5/2012 & rated 93 points: A seductive, intoxicating nose, bold, plush integrated oak; rich, warm fruit, lovely structure, velvety; fully ready, but will hold well. For a supposedly weak vintage a tremendous wine, with age having removed the rustic edge associated with this wine. Approaching the quality of Alion. (2731 views)
Tasted by barolo_99 on 9/22/2011 & rated 92 points: das ist ein wein.
voll, rund tiefe (3743 views)
Tasted by Gian on 9/14/2011 & rated 91 points: garnet color, nose of blackberry, grafite , spices . Full bodied on the palate , savory , round , cocoa and an a very long finish. (3481 views)
Tasted by raffyg on 7/23/2011 & rated 90 points: nice deep garnet ruby colour. I smell plenty of integrated oak, cocoa, blackberry and winter spices. On the palate, great density, good fruit, albeit still a bit tannic and "in your face", do not know if it will get ever get harmonious, but it is good enough with good barbecued meats (3675 views)
Tasted by dougsmith on 3/10/2011 & rated 92 points: Thursday night at Afghan (Afghan Kebab, NY): Showed very well last night. Complex floral and spice notes, perfumy with lots of blackberry. Full on the palate with loads of presence. (4373 views)
Tasted by dougsmith on 3/1/2011 & rated 91 points: Black with a deep ruby rim. Intense, focused nose of blackberry essence, anise and vanilla. Full bodied on the palate with good presence into the finish, sweet but somewhat rough tannins at the end. (4069 views)
Tasted by dustbuddy on 2/14/2011 & rated 94 points: Loved this wine. Vanilla, Blackberry and hints of pepper on the nose lead into a delightful smooth palate displaying further evidence of oak and controlled tannins/acidity. Lovely. (4086 views)
Tasted by WineArchitect on 12/18/2010 & rated 90 points: Opened the bottle just before dinner. Wonderful dark opaque garnet color. Aromas of blackberries, earth and cocoa. In the mouth, the wine has a very viscous feel on the tongue with obvious tannins and espresso tones. Each pour revealed layers of flavors. Proof that the refrigeratioin system of a cellar is the most important factor! See the attached link to understand why:

Tasted by WineArchitect on 9/14/2010 & rated 89 points: Dark intense ruby color. Aromas of roasted dark fruit. Deep dark flavors of cocoa, dark ripe fruit, tar with the heat of the alcahol finish. I would not sit on this wine and consider drinking it all soon. EG WineArchitect (4593 views)
Tasted by floydtp on 8/14/2010 & rated 89 points: Aroma of vanilla, leather and greens (collards, kale) but a little hot betraying the 14.5% alcohol. The taste comes on fast with cherry-flavored tar icing on a black fruit pie but still has the collards present. Kind of a weird taste once I identified it. The finish is a little oaky but has a smooth transition. Enjoyable enough bottle but not a great QPR. (4694 views)
Tasted by WineArchitect on 5/13/2010: Dark ruby in the glass. Deep dark fruit on the nose with hints of tobacco and plum. Softening tannins in the mouth to reveal layers of dark fruit. (4954 views)
Tasted by RedLoverJim on 4/19/2010 & rated 90 points: Nice spiced cherry notes with a pleasant, dry finish. (4949 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 4/19/2010: Dallas DAWGS April tasting (Table 3) (Urbano Cafe, Dallas): Tasted this briefly at the end of a long dinner tasting. YMMV. Reticent herbal plum nose. Savory and somewhat taut after the Cali wines we'd been tasting. Not bad. (6492 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 4/19/2010 & rated 91 points: DAWGS April 2010 - Flights at Urbano's (Urbano's in Dallas, TX): WIML91

Tasted double blind at an offline. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of graphite, tobacco, wet stones, plum, berries, a hint of rose petals, light notes of white pepper. Flavors of berries and cherries with light notes of currants. Bright acidity, firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink or hold.

My guess was a 2002 Bordeaux. Not the first time I've mistaken a Spanish Tempranillo for a Bordeaux. (5484 views)

Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
