Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 93.8 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by LB88 on 8/30/2023 & rated 93 points: Opened early decanted this twice and it barely budged. I would stay away from the rest for another few years. (1138 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 6/20/2023 & rated 94 points: I didn’t find this hard, or particularly tannic, but it’s certainly tight. Doesn’t feel like it’s moved much in 4 years since my last note…pretty classic Roumier in all regards (1166 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 9/10/2022 & rated 94 points: Needs a lot more time, in contrast to 2010. Slightly awkward phase where primary fruit has dropped somewhat but tannins yet to resolve, such that wine feels harder than where I'd expect this to settle with another 10 years. (1974 views)
Tasted by WIBA on 9/10/2022 & rated 88 points: Needs a lot of time also maybe the vintage. Still a bit rough, ripe and dark fruits. Tannin and alcoholic. Not very settled (1867 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 7/6/2022 & rated 96 points: Floral, super polished aromatics with more primary notes than 2010. The ripeness is obvious and if there’s a fault, it’s that the palate finishes with tinge of bitterness as solar vintages often can. (2373 views)
Tasted by LB88 on 8/15/2021 & rated 94 points: This was so tight when opened with only a subtle nose. I decided to double decant it 2 hours before drinking and again at the restaurant. It took at least another hour into the drinking window before it started to mellow. Tannins were fine but just not the normal aromatic fireworks that one would expect from the roumier BM. This has a serious structure and was such a pleasure to drink. However my advice would be to cellar this for at least another 3-5 years. Looking forward to my other 5 bottles.:) 94-96 potential (2356 views)
Tasted by Topper on 8/15/2021 & rated 94 points: Wow. While other, much older vintages of this wine are progressing glacially, this one was wide open on PnP. Beautifully delicious cherry fruit forward, sweet tannins and plenty of aromatics. It's going to get better but there may not be any bottles left undrunk by the time it fully matures. (2883 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 11/5/2020: The bottle must be decanted to serve at this point. Red fruit, violets, candied fruit and minerals. Very dense and concentrated with balanced sweetness despite the ripe vintage. Clearly primary and young but the sweetness gives you immediate pleasure. Still 7-10 years before hitting its early drinking window. 94-95 potential. (3026 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 2/13/2020 & rated 95 points: Roumier Bonnes Mares vertical (67 Pall Mall London): Probably WOTN tied with the Corton 07 for me on the evening. The wine has stuffing but is not hot, a lot of red fruit still a bit buried in the structure which should come out to play over the years / decades and offer up superb long-drinking pleasure. Having had the Cras 09 a few months ago I feel the Cras is in a nice spot and should/could be broached now whereas the BM needs minimum 5 years - but no "crime" to drink today either. (3940 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 2/13/2019 & rated 94 points: Still a pup with Dark cherry fruit with some modest spice showing. Very clean, detailed, not showing any heaviness from this vintage ...as you’d expect from Roumier it’s very precise. I’d say 94-95 today and give it time....perhaps my most common thought when drinking Roumier of any age is the perpetual promise of how good it will be in 10 years. (3925 views)
Tasted by SLab on 10/14/2018 & rated 93 points: Magnifique Bonnes-Mares mais encore très jeune. Fruits noirs présents mais plus discret que le Chambolle village. Vin assez droit probablement dû à son jeune âge. 93-95pts (3315 views)
Tasted by PanosKakaviatos on 1/8/2018 & rated 94 points: Yet another holiday dinner with amazing wines (Black Salt, Washington D.C.): Infanticide anyone? Yes. Far too young to drink now, but it did get better over ... a couple of hours in glass. Contained opulence, density to be sure, licorice, fine licorice. Over time a deep cherry aspect, ripe and vinous, with subtle persistence and density, weight on the palate. Gets more suave and smooth as it sits in glass and even gives out some subtle tobacco notes. 13.5% alcohol. Obvious potential for a higher score. (4884 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/26/2017 flawed bottle: Zachys Capital Collection Pre-Auction BYO Wine Dinner (Fiola Mare - Washington, DC): Small glass, brief note. Something seemed amiss here, but too small a taste to say what. (4942 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 5/15/2017 & rated 95 points: More open than a bottle a year ago. Accessible dark red fruit. Some dark soil notes. Good structure here (3938 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 4/27/2017: Miscellaneous Wines from a France Trip-Burgundy, Alsace, and Paris; 4/20/2017-4/29/2017: Saturated dark ruby. Wow, this just gushes ripe black cherry in a way that initially reminds one of New World wine. Quite huge and rich, overwhelming sweet fruit and smokiness on the palate, but the acidity is sound, and the more time one gives this, some licorice and earth begin to poke through. Long, roundly tannic finish is washed over by fruit. It will take a good 20 years for for the fat and primary fruit to recede enough to fully assess this wine, but no doubt about it-it is a compelling mouthful now. Eclipsed by the Rousseau tonight for subtlety and complexity. (4327 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 4/7/2016 & rated 94 points: A difficult bottle to evaluate as this was quite shuttered on this evening. Whether starting to shut down or an otherwise imperfect example was unclear. Dark red fruit with light spice, but otherwise thin across the palate relative to other surrounding vintages. However, an attractive tannin profile given the young age. 94 (3226 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 4/7/2016: Roumier Bonnes Mares Vertical (Bouley): Soft and expressive nose of black cherry cough syrup with lots of menthol, floral, beeswax, scented candle smoke, red roses. Very open and approachable right now. Very big and ripe on the palate though, somewhat tannic. (4691 views)
Tasted by Jowh on 9/16/2015 & rated 93 points: Roumier Bonnes Mares tasting (Sawan Oslo): Roumier 09
Eleganse både smak og duft. Styrken kommer underveis som en dønning rett før den bryter. Tørre taniner I harmoni. Kjenner jeg noe aceton når den blir varm?
93 (4099 views)
94-97 pts (4781 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 2/23/2013 & rated 93 points: Top 09 and 10 red Burgundy tasting (Capital Grill at Tysons corner, VA): Justin C thought it was corked. It seemed very stemmy . Blue and red fruits, earthy, perfume and a hint of white pepper. Excellent structure. (7668 views)
Tasted by UTPK on 1/9/2013: Probably a bit closed, but still very pure red berry fruit, Läkerol, licorice root and cherries on the nose. Medium body, very elegant taste profile. Incredibly pure with a very long lingering finish carried by unreleased deep fruit. Great potential, but certainly not for the novice to appreciate, as it is very understated and refined. (5256 views)
Tasted by MatthewF on 3/11/2012: In Beaune. Decanted for roughly an hour before trying and then drank over another 2 hours or so. A ripe, but not over ripe nose of red, black and blue berry fruits. Crushed rocks and some savory spice and herb elements. A rich and well textured palate that showed off much of the same fruit, earth, and spice flavors. Very giving, but you are able to see the immense structure the wine has. Very long finish with a great deal of power. Great to try so young and I look forward to trying it again when it gains more maturity. (5540 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/15/2010: Cellar Tasting with Christophe Roumier (Chambolle Musigny): Barrel tasting at Domaine. Best young Bonnes Mares I have ever had. Very subtle to start - wild strawberry, red cherry with a hint of cocoa. Then the flavors just explode in your mouth, showing powerful fruit, lots of pepper and spice. Very powerful, long finish. Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
