Tasted by Jason Wu on 12/31/2023 & rated 93 points: Pineapple, vanilla, yellow peach, fresh apricot, honeycomb, nectarine skin, grapefruit, white roses.
Palate: dry, medium plus acidity, medium plus alcohol, medium plus body, medium plus flavour intensity, nectarine skin bitterness, medium plus finish.
Very good. Mature Chenin! Drink now. (256 views)
Tasted by gblacave on 12/8/2023 & rated 93 points: Really nice, fully mature, Chenin. Some chamomile flowers coming through alongside a healthy dose of lanolin and apple. Just a touch of honey, but the acid supports it and helps the length remain in balance. Really nice wine - especially for the level and the age. (255 views)
Tasted by EvoPeteMTL on 6/22/2022 & rated 91 points: In a good drinking phase. Lots of almonds with crushed rocks. Interesting appellation. I can see this live for a long period of time. (2134 views)
Tasted by ThijsV on 5/7/2021 & rated 93 points: Two hour decant. Again this wine is brilliant and interesting. Reductive, sulphur, smoke, hay evolving into pear, yellow apple with time and higher temperature. Long finish with yellow apple. Great Chenin Blanc (1374 views)
Tasted by ThijsV on 12/12/2020 flawed bottle: Wine tasting Bas & Lennart (Lennart thuis, Zeist): Decanted for 20 hours (as that was what the previous bottle needed), but that was clearly too much. Colliflower was the only real aroma left...

Still one bottle in the cellar (1303 views)
Tasted by Loathesome on 10/19/2020 & rated 89 points: Have always been a lover of Chenin Blanc and been fortunate to try a lot of Baumard's wines over the years. Mid yellow, certainly a very floral, honeyed nose with a richness that hints as to why they produce such great sweet wines. This is rich but totally dry and the all important balancing acidity is just right even 13 years after picking. A lovely wine the fact it has aged so well is a testimony to its quality. (1153 views)
Tasted by TXRhoneRanger on 9/14/2020 & rated 91 points: GIVE THIS BEAST SOME AIR. Drank over 3 days. or DECANT the snot out of it. Really pretty wine if you give it some space. Lanolin, hay, bruised meyer lemon, garam masala (?) mandarin skin. Very complex but this wine doesn't reward eagerness to open. Give it space and time. Also a BIG wine. Needs big food with acidity. (1144 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 9/7/2020 & rated 90 points: Gang of 5 in Covid19 times; Loire (@ RW): Very expressive bouquet with apples. On the palate a firm amount of sweetness, ripe tropical fruits, some bitterness and slightly oxidized impressions. Nevertheless very enjoyable wine. (1158 views)
Tasted by ThijsV on 6/21/2020 & rated 94 points: Unusual, special, but very nice wine. Better when decanted. Very aromatic with a bit of flintstone. Kardemom, honey, citrus, quite complex. Very nice (626 views)
Tasted by NickA on 6/4/2020 & rated 91 points: Ageworthy Loire white wines (Zoom!): Deeper yellow. Whole bunch, stainless steel fermentation and ageing. Super rich on the nose - a floral black hole. So intense on the palate. Full-on honey, but plenty of acidity. How can honey be bitter too? 15% and open knit. Really big and opulent. Waxy and smoky. Not sure I 'get' it, but glad to have tried. (599 views)
Tasted by blaahhi on 3/22/2020 & rated 92 points: Wet stones, honey, hay, wool, apple, citrus and some slight exotic fruit on the nose. The medium to full-bodied palate opens with strong fiery, stony acidity and adding alternating layers of sweetish yellow fruit, smoky minerality and chalky hay and honey. Very long finish, tapering towards stony acids, with the high alcohol manifesting itself a bit. Big, complex, angular, and not easily approachable. This is not really for beginners or for someone looking for easy approachable wines. Still quite young, this has the stuffing and structure to go a long way. (599 views)
Tasted by Lype on 3/7/2020: Wool socks and peach on the fresh nose, the palate is what one expects from a good Chenin Blanc, wool notes, white pepper, white flowers, stones from the beach, fresh peaches and tropicality, waxy smoke, at the age of 13 years still youthful and powerful, will last and probably get a bit more resolved but definetly not too early to open now, very enjoyable, a strong vintage for this wine, probably not everybody's cup of tea, an acquired taste indeed. (563 views)
Tasted by Andrewbdc on 11/22/2019 & rated 92 points: Medium lemon. Pronounced aromas of quince, stone fruit, nuts, lanolin, wax. Fully developed. Med+ acidity, high alcohol, full body. Long finish. Very rich. This is fantastic wine, but it’s a pan acquired taste. It’s not immediately approachable. A wine lover’s wine. This is drinking beautifully now. Won’t develop further but there is no hurry to drink now. (712 views)
Tasted by UTPK on 9/10/2019: Same as last bottle. Perhaps a tad more developed. This is a big wine in the new style of Baumard. (1242 views)
Tasted by TXW213 on 6/8/2019 & rated 89 points: Donkergeel. Neus vrij gesloten.
Kruiden, leer, geconfijt fruit met veel kracht. afdronk. Milde aciditeit. (732 views)
Tasted by Schuurtje on 10/9/2018 & rated 89 points: Not that great wine.
Flat (1067 views)
Tasted by Republic60224 on 5/18/2018 & rated 90 points: Unfortunately for us, we did not let this wine open up properly. It was a bit reserved when we poured it and drank it. By the end of the glass, it started to show more, but with 4 people drinking we each had one glass. Towards the end of the glass, it was showing what a great chenin blanc from Papillon is made of. If you open these, don't do our mistake and not decant. This bad boy needs to open up first! (1429 views)
Tasted by MuckSo on 2/3/2018 & rated 88 points: The 2007 Baumard Chenin Blanc Clos du Papillon was in fact an interesting wine. Being mature this was all about honey, nutmeg, tropical sweet fruit, orange peel, and yellow ripe apple. Felt a little like a mix of young Sauternes and aged Gewürtzraminer. Very good pairing to our food, but not a wine I would drink on its own. This was an intellectual, interesting wine experience for me. (1531 views)
Tasted by Latache01 on 9/4/2017 & rated 87 points: Complex nose with hints of honey, nutmeg, wax and other spices. Oily yet racy on the palate with a lingering finish.
Alas, the high alcohol levels is taking its toll with air time. The wine is turning fatter and alcohol is overshadowing all other savours.
What a pity, maybe better luck with a leaner vintage? (2006 views)
Tasted by UTPK on 7/4/2017: Lovely now. Very complex nose of white truffles, root celeriac and some nutmeg. Full bodied, oily, but not sweet. Astingency is high, acidity is weel balanced. Still lots of fruit. No oxidization. Great with food! (1988 views)
Tasted by todarm on 5/17/2017 & rated 92 points: Drinking incredibly well. Nice mouth feel and fruit flavors. (1845 views)
Tasted by loloFR on 4/23/2017 & rated 92 points: At its peak. Very complex and balanced. To buy again (1665 views)
Tasted by kingkanu on 2/25/2017: Weekend Blind tasting (67 Pall Mall): Blind. Mid gold colour, savoury nuts, cashews, ripe and quite tropical, some heat here, maybe high alcohol, strong legs, med+ acidity, intense and full in the mouth, stewed apple, more nuts.
On tasting I was going for a full throttle new world Chardonnay, but talking about it with the group honey and Sauternes were mentioned which clicked me straight to Loire Chenin Blanc either Vouvray or Savennieres with a bit of age. (1728 views)
Tasted by UTPK on 6/3/2016: Has not changed much since 3 years ago. Big wine, and very unlike the Papillons of the 1990's. Also high alcohol of 14,5% which is clearly detectable on the palate. Wonderful nose of white truffles on top, with some notes of orange rind and heavy spices a la Gewurtz on the bottom of the nasal spectrum, i.e. nutmeg and quatre epice. Powerful midpalate which is almost oily. No doubt due to low yields and high alcohole/glycerine. Finish is carried by bitternes and astringency, like biting into an orange peel. Very interesting wine. (1725 views)
Tasted by Kriz on 2/18/2016 & rated 92 points: Apple, melon and honey on the nose. Delicious palate. Big, tasty and typical Chenin. Well aged, lovely. (1697 views)

Savennières

Savennières is a small, relatively well-known Loire Valley region producing wines made from the chenin blanc grape.

They are not conventionally fruity, and benefit from extensive aging.

Savennieres often have smells like white truffles and animal notes, even when young. They can last for a tremendous amount of time, and some people mistake the evolved aromas after 10-20 years with oxidization, but I have yet to taste an oxidised chenin blanc, since the amount and type of acidity (many g/l and tartaric) preserve the fruit in a much more effective way than e.g. chardonnay.
