Community Tasting Notes (average 88.6 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 63 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Dale M on 2/2/2017 & rated 86 points: Funny, I saw this in a local shop and I was in the market for a decent white in 375ML. Then I saw i had this 9 years ago. CT is pretty damn cool. Fully mature, rich, decent drink but consume soon I would think. (1257 views)
Tasted by vanpe003 on 7/8/2013: Drinking more advanced than I care for, with a level of oxidization that while still drinkable, makes this less than stellar for me. (2125 views)
Tasted by schway on 2/18/2013 & rated 90 points: Nice. Drinking quite well. But not typical Chablis. On the tropical and lush side. Not very minerally or steely. (2243 views)
Tasted by ArtF on 2/15/2013 & rated 86 points: From .375 with screw cap. A little bit tropical on the palate, with a flinty finish. Just OK. Hit its sweet spot in 2009. (2183 views)
Tasted by MindMuse on 1/15/2013 & rated 88 points: Nice, and with good body weight and richness, but almost Meursault-like rather than a more minerally/salinic style I was expecting. (2342 views)
Tasted by ArtF on 10/31/2012 & rated 88 points: Not as good as three years ago, and then it shut down. Open for drinking now and next 6-12 months. (1628 views)
Tasted by vanpe003 on 10/7/2012 & rated 92 points: See prior notes re: bottle variation. When these are good, they are like this bottle. Age-appropriate mellowness, with rough edges rounded off but still enough acidity to keep it lively. Relatively rich mouthfeel and fruit depth. 90 points. Update: a second bottle a couple days later....even better. Perhaps more time in the glass helped this second bottle out, but it was absolutely superb. I've had some Corton Charlemagne that I've liked less. This particular bottle punched way above its class. (1163 views)
Tasted by ArtF on 7/21/2012 & rated 88 points: From .375 screw cap. Pale gold. Aromatic chablis nose. Very slight alcoholic sharpness on palate, but generally these bottles seem to be coming out of a dumb phase, putting on weight and rounding out again.. Better in 3 months, and should drink nicely to 2014. (1030 views)
Tasted by LSwineman on 7/19/2012 & rated 88 points: This was out of a i/2 bottle. What a lovely little wine. Some steeliness on front palate and terroir very evident. The wine was of medium body but clean fruity finish. Some people call me lucky that wines that are knock by many for being over the hill, but my wines are always in 55 degrees and because of what it costs to maintain this is not luck. Many so called reports on cellar tracker are so unreliable. To them I say, keep your thoughts to your self.A palate is a very special thing to abuse. (1862 views)
Tasted by vanpe003 on 7/10/2012 & rated 87 points: From a 375. While not nearly as oxidized as the 2006 opened tonight, this a bit further along in development than I expected. The hallmark for these 375s, under screwcaps, seems to be "variation". I'm batting about.500 with these. This is a good one, relatively speaking. Open on the nose. Alluring in fact. On the palate.....too "old" for the vintage. Unlike some others, this bottle is drinkable, if not typical. I really hope the 750s perform better...... (1134 views)
Tasted by vanpe003 on 3/20/2012 flawed bottle: Another 375 screwcap that was way to far along (oxidized) in its evolution. (1134 views)
Tasted by jbaron on 3/10/2012 & rated 90 points: Dark and nice. Chalky, a bit dank. (1072 views)
Tasted by ArtF on 3/1/2012 & rated 86 points: From .375 screwcap. This hit a sweet spot in 2009, but is still enjoyable. Not sure if it will improve again or not. Also, noticeable bottle variation in my experience. This one was pleasant, no premox, but some bitter peach pit in finish. (1099 views)
Tasted by jbaron on 2/19/2012 & rated 90 points: Opens wild, but settles down into a dark groove in 10 minutes. Nice. (1045 views)
Tasted by vanpe003 on 12/13/2011 & rated 89 points: This wine continues to puzzle me. I've had exclusively the 375s, one remarkably fresh, the others showing much older than their age. This one falls into the latter category. Initially, almost undrinkable with an overt oxidized character. However, with 10 minutes in the glass, enough of that blows off, and enough fruit and acidity come forward to turn this into a quite pleasant if not typical Chablis. The fact that it blows off makes me think that maybe it's not premox, because usually for me the more time in the glass the worse a premox'd wine gets. The raw materials (acidity, marine salinity, fresh fruit) are there, but somewhat masked by a nuttiness that while faded, still makes its presence known. (1295 views)
Tasted by jbaron on 11/25/2011 & rated 90 points: Darkly rich, saline, but not quite enough bite for the taste. Nonetheless, a nice drink in an eccentric sort of way. Little nose. Decent enough length, but quite full mouth and tastes. Little overt fruit, but some good earth and some good funk make this one interesting. (1258 views)
Tasted by jbaron on 6/3/2011 & rated 90 points: Pretty nice tonight. Perhaps could use a bit more bling, but the tastes are dark and shelly chablis. Que rico! (1517 views)
Tasted by ArtF on 3/31/2011 & rated 91 points: From .375 with screwtop. Not sure if there's a hint of premox or if that's chablis flintiness. Otherwise still drinking well and can last to 2012, more if full bottles. Very light straw with green glimmers. Nice flinty chablis nose with no oak. Light to medium bodied, went perfect with sushi, good with tempura also. (1986 views)
Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 12/3/2010 & rated 86 points: From 375. This one was a tad bit oxidized as it warmed. And a bit too closed when cold. This wine continues to puzzle me. (1843 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 5/19/2010: From half bottle. Golden baked fruit, more golden than white or clear, but ripe and not dried out, sun-baked orchard fruit, with lively acidity. The golden aspect was more Chenin than Chablis. Based on this bottle, drink now. Are the .375s labeled Montmain and the .750s Montmains? (816 views)
Tasted by isdblm@lsu.edu on 5/19/2010 & rated 89 points: From 375 screwtop--drinking like a slightly above average, i.e., sufficiently tasty, steely apple-peach Chablis. Good with salmon and sweet grits, good for the $. (2286 views)
Tasted by ianinvirginia on 5/18/2010 & rated 88 points: Washington Tasters Guild 2005 White Burgundy Tasting (Marcel's in Washington, DC): Wet sweater on the nose contrasts with lemony fruit on mouth entry, followed by a saline mid palate and a minerally finish. Quaint on its own but excellent with fish. (2884 views)
Tasted by RSLyss on 5/6/2010 & rated 90 points: The vineyard is actually Montmain instead of Montmains, but I've noted it as the latter due to the large amount of TN's listed that way.

Nose: Shy and restrained, showing apple, pear skin, and dashes of mineral.

Taste: Fully in the drinking window now, tasting more like a high quality Maconnaise white than anything else. Nicely viscous, with poached apple and pear flavors, folding into pastry notes mid-palate. Juicy and delicious, it may disappoint Chablis hardcores looking for liquid minerality. On its own merits, a pleasing and well made White Burgundy. (2437 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 4/30/2010: Delicious. Clear, pure fruit, very direct and pure palate. There is a roundness at the bottom of the palate, and a hint of vanilla, even though this wine is all-stainless; I quite like this added complexity. A very good showing; seems to be drinking in top form today. (2169 views)
Tasted by ArtF on 4/1/2010 & rated 88 points: From .375 screwtop. Better than previous bottle, with lemon on nose, citrus and salt on palate. Drink up. (2206 views)

(MONTMAINS Louis Michel) Chablis Deal Dear Friends, We get a large number of requests for half bottles, and we rarely carry them, so take note... This wine isn’t going to save the world but it is just what the doctor ordered for a summer picnic or afternoon on the terrace (or just about anything you can think of where the occasion is relaxed and without pretense). There’s not much to say with this wine - it is from 100% Montmains 1er fruit (instead of the usual blend of 3-4 different terroirs bottled as Montmains) and it drinks well now or should improve over the next few years. If you are looking for a stash of half-bottles to open out any night of the week, this is a top deal: We have a terrific price on this wine, about the same as in France ONE SHIPMENT ONLY At this price with perfect provenance directly from the source: 2005 Louis Michel Chablis 1er “Montmains” (375ml) Please give us your maximum number up to 12/person and we will allocate accordingly Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Burg7377

The Michel family have been cultivating the Chablis terroir for 6 generations, since 1850.

The Domaine Louis Michel winery is situated right in the heart of the village of Chablis, with the 25-hectare vineyard spread over the very first slopes that were cultivated by Cistercian monks in the 11th century. More than 40 years ago, the family was one of the first to stop making wine in wooden barrels, preferring to create clean, pure and precise Chablis, respecting the typicity of each terroir, without any woody tastes.

Through this philosophy, combined with the limited yields inspired by organic wine-growing techniques, Domaine Louis Michel has developed a worldwide reputation for fine wine-making in stainless steel tanks. Today, the Domaine is managed by Jean-Loup and his nephew, Guillaume Michel.

“Our goal is to produce authentic Chablis that respect the environment and are the best expression of the terroir. We let the wine make itself, as far as possible.” – Guillaume Michel

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Chablis

Chablis (Fédération de Défense de l'Appellation Chablis) | Chablis (Burgundy Wines)

2014 Vintage Notes:
"... a hybrid of 2004/2007 and 2010. The stone, citrus and limestone amalgam is exactly what we search for in Chablis as the style harkens to a day in the Cote de Beaune proper (1960's - 1980's) when wine was not meant to be consumed the week it was released, battonage was not used by all and new oak was rarely seen ... the texture is natural and 'of the vintage' not 'of the winemaker' .... Like Sancerre or the Loire in general, 2014 in Chablis is one of those rare years with extract and transparency. It appears to be a vintage for the "neoclassic" ages and those of us intent on cellaring the most terroir-driven (but still powerful) examples of vineyard, site-place and varietal will want to invest (heavily) in the magnetic and electric 2014's." - Jon Rimmerman

2018 Vintage Notes:
"There’s not that razor sharp Chablis acidity in 2018,” says Patrick Piuze. “But there is good definition of place. The dry conditions drove vines to drink deeper down in the soil profile."
