Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 17 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by colinscellar on 2/22/2022 & rated 93 points: Classic Coonawarra. Ripe blackcurrant, chocolate and a nice big hit of eucaplytus. Pleasantly soft tannins but still enough grip present holding the wine together.

2008 was a hot year and Yalumba chose not to make their flagship Cab Sauv, The Menzies, so The Cigar benefited from getting premium fruit that normally goes into the higher label. Wine of the Night for me in a lineup of some premium labels. (463 views)
Tasted by VinCapitan on 6/13/2017 & rated 96 points: Sweeter fruited, blackberry, menthol, beaut balance, loved it. seamless finish. Fine grained tannin Beautiful (1738 views)
Tasted by Jgallup on 11/29/2015 & rated 90 points: Must wait for this to open up, but worth the wait. Nose of chocolate and parsley. Rich dark fruit palate. As winemaker Peter Gambetta note, there is a "sea spray tang" which is typical of Australian cabernets. Great value. (2183 views)
Tasted by Drinking Trees on 4/22/2014: Nose of blackcurrant and liquorice, with hints of pandan and raspberry. Palate is medium-bodied, with fresh notes of blackcurrant and red cherry juice, and charred, smoky oak on the finish. (2743 views)
Tasted by Patrick - winereviewer.com.au on 11/8/2013 & rated 93 points: I like to think of the cigar as a baby Menzies, with the wine showing very similar characters to it's more expensive stable mate.

The nose has a choc peppermint character alongside blackberry and cedar, the tannins across the palate are long and drying and there is an underlying liquorice all sorts richness that complements blackberry and mint. Great length of grainy black fruits to finish.

Tasted by Patrick - winereviewer.com.au on 8/11/2013 & rated 88 points: The nose is a little one dimensional with rich primary red fruits, no doubt due to the youth of the wine. The tannins are not overly present and the wine has medium body and acceptable length

Tasted by Mingestrom on 1/22/2013 & rated 89 points: Sweet fruit, cherry, raspberrty, cassis, ceder on the nose.
alcohol, cherry, herbs and a bit tight at the finish wuth cherries. (1632 views)
Tasted by Ianjaig on 10/8/2011 & rated 79 points: Nose closed, palate a touch sweet, nice smooth and pleasant but not as had expected. Not worth buying again. $30 from countdown. (2268 views)
Tasted by Personal Opinion on 6/12/2011: Dominating notes of eucalyptus override ripe, concentrated, plummy dark fruit and ceder... typical, if not classic... though not overly, overly extracted (which is good).. it is simply just concentrated, balanced, and enjoyable... with a smooth entry.. and mildly, dusty, grippy tannins showing themselves in the finish... a nice cab... a BIG cab.. with a lingering finish... with a 'little' cedar in the bottom of the glass.. though all typical and expected for an Australian Cab from Connnawarra... a solid Aussie cab for $20.. (1680 views)
Tasted by groper1234 on 9/14/2010 & rated 90 points: Colour is medium dark purple. On the nose, fruity, blackfruits, violet. On the palate, medium bodied fresh and juicy but tad too sweet for my taste. Quite nice cabernet but not great. It taste simple and thin. It needs more weight and structure. HMMM winefront gave this wine of the year and I have to say I am disapointed. Nice juicy wine but there are plenty better wines than this at 23 dollar I payed for. (1944 views)
Tasted by Thomo80 on 7/31/2010 & rated 95 points: Nose of lifted blackcurrant, mulberry and soft cedary oak. Palate is velvety smooth and lucious. Balanced blackberry's and blackcurrant fruit with silky tannin and good acidity give a bold and refreshingly zingy mouthfeel. Layered and complex with great length. Exceptional wine at this price AUD $20 (1989 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon
