Tasted by DBenke on 5/12/2024 & rated 93 points: Drinking nice (305 views)
Tasted by PMJak11 on 4/25/2024 & rated 94 points: PnP. Bordeaux like with more fruit and less earth/wood. Velvety texture but lighter and thinner than expected. Wouldn’t turn down a glass. (1113 views)
Tasted by CleverCorkage on 4/14/2024: A really strong showing this weekend. Our bottle was a blend of the 2016 and 2017 vintage and was decanted for 2 hours prior to dinner. This was showing pronounced flavor intensity with a restrained ripeness of fruit more akin to a ripe left bank Bordeaux rather than Napa. Very well integrated use of new french oak which added to the flavor complexity of the wine. A medley of dark black fruit, toasted cedar, and savory spices. (1648 views)
Tasted by Hiker4life70 on 4/4/2024 & rated 92 points: Tasty with Marin French Breakfast Brie. It brought out a salted caramel flavor to the Brie and enhanced the wine. I usually enjoy this cheese with an oaked Chardonnay but found this equally good with this. Consistently good wine each time I try this. (2135 views)
Tasted by super007 on 2/18/2024 & rated 93 points: Excellent
Likely with 8-10 years of cellaring
Velvet texture, delicate and soft
Very old world style and approach (3712 views)
Tasted by skumar on 2/18/2024: Date night (3270 views)
Tasted by APS2 on 2/16/2024 & rated 90 points: Anticipated more. Has all the qualities on the nose, however is underwheling for the QPR. It did develop over a couple hours so I’m hoping a couple more years will do wonders. . (3099 views)
Tasted by rnjbond on 2/12/2024 & rated 89 points: Napa and Sonoma, January 2024: Tasted at winery.

Nose is mellow, with lemon-chocolate and spice. Easy to drink, some spicy notes, meaningfully less complex than the other Opus wines. It's good, but the QPR is a little off here. (3078 views)
Tasted by MagicInABottle on 2/9/2024 & rated 90 points: Historically an enjoyable second bottle from Opus, until the price went bonkers ($150+) as other posters have noted. For this reason, the QPR is low and the rating must take a hit. Deep burgundy in color, the palate is comprised of forest floor, baking spice, licorice and mellowed black fruit, ultimately finishing a bit short and lacking the nuance of other wines at this price point. With such a large departure from the flagship wine, it fits a different category, which should be reflected in the cost. Still a solid juice, but there are a plethora of other worthy options out there that punch well above their weight. (2774 views)
Tasted by Harfouch on 2/1/2024 & rated 91 points: Smells great. Touches of wood and tobacco. The alcohol is present in the aroma, but doesn’t cut through the deeper flower scents that are present. Tastes quite nice. You get some dark fruits, blueberry, plum, and black cherry. Theres a hint of ripe nectarine. Silky. Round. Decent tannins. Not a long finish. This is a wine you will definitely enjoy, but you won’t brag about it as being a favorite. 90-91. (2101 views)
Tasted by Sperls on 1/21/2024 & rated 92 points: An older version (have cellared for probably 8-10 years), I was excited to try an aged multi vintage Bordeaux blend because I believe more top producers could and should be putting out multi vintage blends just like in Champagne in order to produce a great consistent product and mitigate vintage risk. I enjoyed the bottle with dark red fruit, silky mouthfeel, still tannins present and long finish but no way should this be a $150+ bottle, as maybe that is the Opus premium (I don’t think Opus is worth it for the cost either). At $150, an aged Lynch Bages would blow this away and my much cheaper Pride Napa 2014’s do as well. Still, cool to try and I enjoyed the wine but the pricing is off… (1996 views)

Tasted by Winedog1 on 11/15/2023 & rated 94 points: Wine barrel. Graphite finish. Clearly Napa. (2473 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 11/12/2023 & rated 91 points: NV version but tasted recent release so I am going with 22' release. The wine delivers aromas of blackberry fruit with a tinge of green olive aroma. In mouth the wine is more black fruit with plum, blackberry, mulberry and dark cherry. Slightly flat and non dimensional. That said it is very enjoyable right now. (1079 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 11/2/2023 & rated 90 points: Not sure on this wine. Nice nose but fruit is disjointed. Really not up to its pedigree or pricetag. By day three after vacuvin this was finally showing something. (958 views)
Tasted by AGELVIS on 10/13/2023 & rated 90 points: Two hour double decant. Very very deep magenta color. Anise, star fruit, persimmon, blackberry, and coconut cake. Dry palate, with good acidity. Firm, full tannins on the longish finish.

This was the version with fruit from 2017 and 2018. This was not my style. I’ll need to try a version with two good vintages. (3208 views)
Tasted by agsdlswine on 9/23/2023 & rated 93 points: Delicious Napa Bordeaux blend from Opus drinking at a high level now. 2-hour decant helped the wine open up nicely which paired well w/Porterhouse steaks. (2701 views)
Tasted by Winowhyno on 8/31/2023 & rated 92 points: Beautiful floral nose....very well balanced...tamed tannins....smooth finish. I would say green apple and cherry dominate without much air. (1246 views)
Tasted by wine eng on 7/9/2023 & rated 88 points: Tasted at a wine tasting on a cruise ship. Fruit was muted with medium tannins. Had bandaid on the nose which I felt overwhelmed the balance of the wine. Might have been better if decanted. (3491 views)
Tasted by Sundbyberg on 6/28/2023 & rated 93 points: I would have guessed Bordeaux from a very good year and from a high-end producer. Well done. (3039 views)
Tasted by CraigBartlett on 6/24/2023: Enjoyed this immensely with Skip and Denise Vallee when they came over for dinner June 23, 23 (2762 views)
Tasted by Ernestas on 6/13/2023 & rated 93 points: Unique and extraordinary blend of grapes, soils, vineyards and vintages. Made from 95% CS, 3% Merlot, 1% CF and 1% PV, base of 2019 vintage together with 2018. Aged for 18 months in FR oak, 60% new, 40% second use, bottled in 2021, released in 2022. Deep ruby. Intense aroma of blackcurrants, cherries, blueberries, violets, chocolate, herbs. Full body, intense and concentrated with a string of restraint and elegance. Smooth polished texture, black fruit, toasted oak, herb and chocolate flavours, medium- tannins. (2650 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 6/12/2023 & rated 93 points: blind
Reminds to Cali Cab but not that fruit and oak dominated as in the past. 92-93 (1150 views)
Tasted by wine-enthusiast on 6/11/2023 & rated 92 points: Medium full bodied my Opus was a blend of 16-17 and was very nice. (2369 views)

Opus One

Producer website

Château Mouton Rothschild winemaker Lucien Sionneau and Robert Mondavi’s son Timothy made the partnership’s first vintage at the Robert Mondavi Winery in 1979. The following year the partners officially announced their joint venture.

In 1981 a single case of the joint venture wine sold for $24,000 at the first Napa Valley Wine Auction – the highest price ever paid for a California wine. In 1982 Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild began label design. The partners agreed to choose a name of Latin origin for the joint venture, allowing for easy recognition in both English and French. Baron Philippe announced his choice, “Opus,” a musical expression denoting the first masterwork of a composer. Two days later he proposed an additional word: “Opus One”.

Opus One Overture

In keeping with the tradition of many great Bordeaux estates, Opus One produces a fine second wine called Overture. Since 1993, Overture has been crafted as a part of our relentless pursuit of quality for Opus One. Every acre of our estate vineyard is farmed with the attention to detail and singular focus required to produce Opus One. Nevertheless, in any given year, not all of the parcels from our estate are selected for the final blend of Opus One. When these wine lots are afforded additional time in barrel, in combination with the added flexibility of blending across multiple vintages, the final wine achieves a remarkable elegance and complexity that represents a superb expression of our estate. This is Overture.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
