Community Tasting Notes (average 94.9 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 549 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by jbcab992 on 4/19/2024 & rated 98 points: PnP- this was absolutely excellent. Time left in the tank, seemed like early stages of drinkability. Such a beautiful, complete wine. (460 views)
Tasted by pclin on 4/8/2024 & rated 94 points: 2x halves. PnP. A tale of two halves, both from the same wooden case but behaving very differently.

First bottle - nose was not entirely clean, ever so slightly corked. Very young on the palate, robust and huge wine, years away from reaching the peak. Lively with noticeable acidity to balance out the tannins. (NR).
Second bottle - clean if rather subtle nose, ready now with tannins mostly softened, fairly linear over 2 hours lunch, never did fade or develop further, good but not great bottle, maybe a 94 pointer. (1019 views)
Tasted by Rob Hansult on 3/18/2024: Still big ruby garnet color. Big, rich, sappy, chewy/salty cherry liqueur & aged soft leather. Mostly resolved, rich tannins. (1636 views)
Tasted by sdr on 3/8/2024 & rated 93 points: From a bottle in outstanding condition purchased about 30 years ago, this must be 1982 Léoville Las Cases at its best. And that is very, very good - but not great. Very deep garnet, no brown. Nicely if modestly fragrant of dark berry patch. Excellent concentration of cassis, blackberry and pomegranate. No fade over two hours. And yet at age 42 I am still waiting for subtlety, nuance and complexity, much less mystery. To enjoy greatly but not to love. (1554 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 2/26/2024 & rated 95 points: Generally: amazingly young & fresh, outstanding nose and palate

Appearance:
Deep ruby-red color with a garnet rim, showing signs of maturity and evolution.
Brilliant clarity, suggesting careful aging and storage.

Aroma:
Complex bouquet with layers of aromas, including ripe blackcurrants, blackberries, and dark cherries.
Notes of cedar, tobacco, and leather add depth and sophistication.
Subtle hints of earthiness, truffle, and dried herbs provide further complexity.
Delicate floral nuances, such as violet or dried rose petals, may be present.

Palate:
Full-bodied with a luxurious, silky texture that glides across the palate.
Ripe fruit flavors dominate, with blackberry, cassis, and plum at the forefront.
Secondary flavors of tobacco, leather, and cedarwood contribute to its mature character.
Fine-grained tannins are well-integrated, offering structure and support without overpowering.
Balanced acidity provides freshness and vibrancy, ensuring a long and graceful aging potential.
The finish is long and lingering, with echoes of dark fruit, spice, and a hint of graphite minerality. (1375 views)
Tasted by sdr on 2/17/2024 & rated 93 points: From a healthy example the ‘82 Léoville Las Cases is delicious but still rather monochromatic. You can greatly enjoy the concentrated cassis fruit and full mouth feel but after the second sip you wonder where is the nuance, detail and complexity. (2008 views)
Tasted by platpeeps on 2/13/2024 & rated 94 points: Initially quite austere, savoury and tight with firm tannins, but as it opened out in the glass, these simply melted away to reveal an array of complex flavours allied to cassis fruit. As it resolved the fruit sweetened to a delightfully lengthy finish. It was just so elegant, stylish and classically proportioned, and what was even more remarkable, it still has some way to go. It was a real privilege to taste this. CHP 94 pts (1764 views)
Tasted by Haggis on 2/10/2024 & rated 98 points: Absolutely stunning. I opened about two hours before a meal of mushroom paella (made by good friend, Robert). Gorgeous nose and palate of medium red fruit, graphite, sweetish licorice, earthy. We drank this in Feb. 2024, but I forgot to write down notes. Here we are, two months later, and I'm trying to recreate the experience. Suffice it to say, this is loaded, beautiful, graceful. One the best wines I've enjoyed in the past decade. Safe to open now, but can sit quietly in the cellar for a few more years without losing a step. Next up, the 1989 vintage. :) (747 views)
Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 1/26/2024 & rated 95 points: The star of the lunch, paired with steaks, still dark, iron, red fruits, beautiful wine, fully mature & drinking at peak (1939 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 12/22/2023: 1953 Dinner: Milestone Birthday (Gemma Fish + Oyster): Dark and brooding and intense and lovely and like the HB just a touch too young but still a very nice wine. Fun to end with a bit of a young horizontal of things. (2413 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 12/1/2023: Super. Very classical Leoville profile. It needs some quiet attention to make sense of it. Nothing showy here. Don’t quite see the high scores of others but if you want great St Julien without fuss this ‘82 will do. Good from now but will cruise for years … (2623 views)
Tasted by pclin on 11/25/2023 & rated 95 points: 375ml. PnP. From the same case as previous halves. Nose is not entirely clean but not bothersome enough to put one off. Still very young on the palate, vibrant acidity with some tannins bite on the mid-palate. A beautiful Bordeaux in its early maturity and will continue to improve. A 100 pointer this is not but is still a very good wine. Good concentration and length as you would expect from LLC. At least another 20 years to go, ‘82 on the way down my ass. (2573 views)
Tasted by vinopad demo on 11/7/2023: - Garnet color. It's unbalanced. (2921 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 10/25/2023 & rated 95 points: Heidi's Redux at local fav STG. CV, BE,KB,DD,LI & JG. James btl. This was a real treat as I rarely get an opportunity to drink BDX from the legendary 82 vintage. Then from a top producer to boot. Amazingly this should improve as it drinks a bit youthful still after 41yrs in the btl??? It saw plenty of air to boot. Be fun to taste this again between 2026-2040. (2783 views)
Tasted by JCGuthrie on 10/25/2023 & rated 96 points: Same bottle as rocknroller. I gave this a 70 minute decant and then back into the bottle for another couple hours of slow O. This was absolutely gorgeous, with layer upon layer of dark fruit, tobacco, earthiness, sour bois and pencil. So many years left. Highly recommend giving these some air if you have a well-stored bottle. (2406 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/25/2023 & rated 95 points: Heidi's Gang: Seriously Folks (St. Genevieve, Mpls, MN): Very dark red color, 3mm clear edge. Double decanted for 70 minutes, slow-O for 2.5hrs after. Pencil, deep dark fruits, damp earth, wood spices, more subtle dried flowers on the nose. The palate is steeped in pencil, wood spices, dried forest floor, succulent deep dark fruits, cassis, mountain wild berries, very long and nicely layered with polished tannins. Showing youthfully tonight even with a good bit of air. 95+ to 96pts. (2187 views)
Tasted by Eric on 10/19/2023: M&PD Tasting: Argentinian Grill (Mount Baker, Seattle, WA): Epic, a perfect example of this LLC. Graphite and mineral, dark and brooding. This has never been a really generous wine, but this bottle was really rounding into form. (2361 views)
Tasted by Brolawa on 10/19/2023: M&PD Goldbergs. EVH. Just opening now. Liquid graphite, cherries. Still structured. (1867 views)
Tasted by surfnturf on 10/17/2023 & rated 100 points: This took hours to open up, initially it seemed a bit one dimensional. However after three hours it really soared, mixing a ridiculous amount of fresh fruit (for a 40 year old wine) with striking herbaceous, earth and smoke notes. It’s not heavy or sweet, but has undeniable weight and shows extremely youthfully. I get why Parker gave it a perfect mark and could see this going another 40 years. (2016 views)
Tasted by djhammond on 9/23/2023 & rated 99 points: Without doubt this is the greatest Las Cases produced to date, and matches the superlative left bank first growths from 1982. If there was ever a wine that needed to be formalised as a first growth, it is Las Cases. For myself this is head to head with the 1982 Mouton, and nearly with the Pichon Lalande, but it still benefits from a couple of hours in the decanter to settle. It has actually improved over the last 12 months, and has the structure to be a 100 year old wine. The nose is a heady experience of old leather, musty hymn books, plum, blackcurrant, and violet, and so unique to a perfect old Bordeaux moment. Secondary and tertiary notes abound with a velvet mouthfeel and a finish pushing past 60 seconds. This is one of the greatest wines from Bordeaux in the last 50 years, and it reminds me of the mystical joy a truly great wine can give you. However, it needs attention to truly appreciate it's magnificence without idle chatter as a distraction. 99+ (2498 views)
Tasted by JCGuthrie on 9/14/2023 & rated 96 points: Deep, earthy nose with cedar, soft plum fruit, fresh tobacco. Enormous depth and layering. Much more vibrant than one would expect from a 41 year old wine. Soft and smooth on the palate. Excellent! (2030 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 9/14/2023 & rated 96 points: Guys night - a bottle with a story (Jason's house): Decanted an unknown time then poured back into the bottle to drink a few hours later. Drank a good-sized glass over 2 hours. Chocolate, plummy fruit, tobacco, seems a darker palate than the 1989 Ausone. This really smoothed out in the glass with smoked meat and earth. (2388 views)
Tasted by I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine on 9/14/2023 & rated 96 points: Guys Night - Wines with a story behind it! (Jason's House): This wine exceeded my lofty expectations! Why were my expectations lofty? First, Las Cases just begs for time in the bottle no matter how old it is! Second, it is 1982! This wine definitely did not disappoint! The wine is totally in my wheelhouse, displaying that perfect balance between fruit and tertiary flavors!

First, the color was dark and rich with no real bricking, which surprised me...based on looks, I would have thought this much younger than 40+ years!

Nose showed lots of earth, leather and dark fruit, with hints of purple flower, anise and oak. Palate showed red and dark fruit (mostly red and black currant) but with integrated earth, tobacco, tar and some forest floor, with spice and toasted bark in the background. A real pleasure to drink! Unfortunately, I didn't get an opportunity to follow this throughout the night because I kept going back for another sip and the glass didn't last terribly long! Seamless integration! 95+ to 96 without hesitation! Thanks James!

Tied for groups number 2 wine.....my number 3. (2491 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 9/5/2023 & rated 98 points: A stunningly good bottle, rich and silky, with dark red fruits, licorice and fine minerality. Edgeless and delicious. (2581 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 9/2/2023 & rated 94 points: Like another bottle in 2020, surly at first but immensely improved by 30 minutes of air, unfolding with a strikingly-mineral, pencilly profile, supported by the classical Las Cases fruitti di bosco profile, cedar, and a little unsmoked tobacco. The classic lavender potpourri note of Las Cases is subtle here, but it's there. The palate is a little more angular at first, but plumps up with air. The acidity is quite good for '82 with tannins that have mostly integrated. The pencil-filled finish lingers beautifully. (2816 views)

Rockss and Fruit (10/10/2007)
(Leoville-Las Cases) The 1982, which I have had once before at the same location and it was tight as a you know what. Tonight it was no different. What is up with this wine? Mute on the nose with hints of tobacco, earth and mineral but not much else and you had to really concentrate to smell that tobacco, earth and mineral. The palate was closed shut and only started to come out of its shell towards the end of the night and you could see hints of its greatness. Three years between me having this wine and it budged maybe an inch. This maybe outlive us all. I say ten years before it starts to strut its stuff.

Rockss and Fruit (7/20/2004)
(Chateau Leoville Las Cases) This was just young. Ungiving on the nose but all the stuff on the palate was there. Dark fruits, amazing levels of concentration, a long sneaky finish, noble tannins and the proper balance but this botttle showed particularly young and closed. Eh, it happens. Great wine but hold off for at least five more.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Bordeaux Wine Guide

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Julien

VdB

Read more detailed information on St. Julien and its wines The seventeenth century pioneers Traces are to be found of a Saint-Julien de Rintrac, perhaps Saint-Julien's earliest name, as from the thirteenth century. But we have to wait until the seventeenth century pioneers, urban and rural aristocrats, discover the exceptional merits of these terroirs.
Traces of this system still exist today in the structure of estates within the appellation: by the side of the two villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, the large estates are heavily preponderant, representing more than four fifths of the total surface of vineyards.

The terrain is practically identical over all the commune. Only the proximity of the estuary, sometimes close, sometimes further away, can cause slight variations in climate. In fact, Saint-Julien-Beychevelle's layer of gravel takes the form of a huge rectangle over 3 miles long and 2 miles wide. And the alluvial deposits are particularly well fragmented into ridges of Garonne gravel of the early Quaternary. Accordingly, the vines are safeguarded from stagnant water.

The wines from the Saint-Julien appellation may be recognized by their unparalleled bouquet, particularly harmonious and mild. They have a fine deep colour and combine the finesse of their aromas and a solid constitution. They have body, are very rich in flavour and have a delicious and delicate bouquet.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)
In order to have the right to the Saint-Julien appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Saint-Julien and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cussac, and Saint-Laurent, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
