Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 74 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Chrysostomus on 3/24/2024 & rated 93 points: Had a 375ml and a 750ml side by side. The 375ml seemed much older, red/brown colored, tannins a little bit more rectangular. The 750ml was in perfect shape, tannins silkier and lasted longer. Tasted blind and guessed, these would be 2 different wines!
Both lasting long, some pepper coming through, with more temperature slightly alcoholic, but still in control. Very nice for a 2011. Underrated?
375: 91 pts; 750: 93 pts. (381 views)

Tasted by tak4 on 2/10/2024 & rated 89 points: From Coravin, my new thing

Appearance: clear, deep, ruby
Nose: clean, medium, blackberry, orange peel, leather, cedar, fully developed
Palate: dry, med+ acid, med alcohol, med tannins, med+ body, med intensity, blackberry forward, med finish

Balance - good - lots of acid and not the fruit intensity I'd like
Length - good, not great
Intensity - fairly intense on the nose
Complexity - moderate, wasn't exactly bursting with subtlety

Nice wine, I'd say good to very good, it's fully mature now but potential to improve over 3-5 years. (618 views)
Tasted by tak4 on 6/10/2023 & rated 90 points: Do I love Bordeaux? Or do I love the idea of Bordeaux? These are the things that keep me up at night.

My first fine wine experiences were Bordeaux - but then my wine friends red-pilled me on Burgundy. But Bordeaux is the gold standard, is easier to understand, and the pricing is so much better.... I want to like all Bordeaux, I really do. But, like all wines, there's no magic formula.

Popped and aerated. Tasting note taken on the last sip.

Wine is a dark crimson with no visible signs of age.

On nose I get currants, mushroom, bay leaf, blackberry.

On palate, wine is sound, medium-low acid, medium-low and softening tannins, short-ish finish. Berry forward.

Overall, this is a delicious wine. The first few sips were actually not that great as they seemed almost over the hill - but then with a little bit of time it started to evolve nicely.

I think it is drinking well now but won't suffer with additional time.

The difference between first and last sip on this wine was gigantic. On first sip, I would have poured it down the sink. On the last, I poured it down my throat. There's a lesson there. Bordeaux is a different animal and reacts differently to air than the pinot noir that I am used to.

I need to explore this further. The world of great Bordeaux is deep, rich, and appealing. Fun times ahead. (1850 views)
Tasted by ayalao3 on 4/28/2023 & rated 94 points: Somewhere between 93-94. Lacks a bit of “longeur” but it’s a great wine to drink anyday. Some complexity in flavors. (1657 views)
Tasted by popopdrops on 4/12/2023 & rated 90 points: Dekantert. Overveldende frukt, noe grønn, stilk dag 2, bedre nedover, men vent til 2025. (1510 views)

Tasted by bram_epicurien on 11/30/2022 & rated 87 points: Wednesday evening in diessenhofen, opening a case as time has come. Deep purple color. Heat and alcohol, blueberries, black pepper, wet forest floor on the nose. Med acidity, high alcohol, full body, Med flavor intensity, med tannins, med finish. Fruity mouth, quite warm, spicy, a bit of greenness and cream sticking a bit longer. Overall a bit too alcoholic (it says 13.5 on the bottle but this is well above 14.5 I believe). Next time I will try this with a couple of hours of decant to check if this integrates better. (1552 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 11/23/2022 & rated 93 points: Ten Vintages Haut Bailly vs Mission HB: Preamble: All wines tasted blind in 10 vintage flights (1994-2015). To every flight one random third wine from Pessac Leognan added (2x Haut Brion, 2x Smith, 2x Pape Clement, 1x Branon, 1x Luchy Halde, 1x Carmes, 1x Chevalier). All wines opened a few hours before consumption but no decanting.

Some findings:
1) Haut Bailly outperformed Mission (5 vs 4 wins, 92.5 vs 90.5 average). 2) Haut Bailly is a rather structured wine which seems to shine bright in ripe and warm vintages, without any form of excess ripeness or extraction. 3) When done right (05/15), Mission eclipses Haut Bailly with its depth and delineation , but several vintages showed a bit too ripe but especially with the alcohol not well masked (09/10). 4) Pessac wines usually need quite some air to open up. In this setting (no decanting), most wines needed a lot of swirling to fully open up and will need more cellar time. 5) The best wines today were Haut Bailly 09 (96pts) & 10 (95pts) and Mission 05 & 15 (95pts).

TN: Inviting, round nose with ripe dark fruit, some blue notes, some cola notes, hints of herbs. Quite inviting and clean. The palate is fine, round, fresh, probably a touch acidic or are there some green notes? But a nice lot of blue and dark fruits, and even some candied notes which go well with the herbal, minerality tones. Fairly fine structural frame and pleasurable to drink. All 3 2011s showed well but do not have the depth of better vintages as well as probably a touch too pronounced acidity.

Decanting: 1-2 hours should do the job. (2762 views)

Tasted by Collector1855 on 1/5/2022 & rated 94 points: Nice, right of the bat this wines transcends the vintage. Expressive and complex nose with dark fruit, forest, farmyard, sweet spices, cake. Lush palate for a 2011 and excellent finish. A clear success of the vintage. Drink now and over the next 10 years. (3292 views)
Tasted by popopdrops on 11/13/2021 & rated 89 points: Dekantert. Litt kantede dag 1. Kommet mer til segselv dag 2, men stadig et par motvillige tanniner. (2215 views)
Tasted by Ballballsheep on 12/20/2020 & rated 93 points: Black cherry, raspberry, a bit chocolate......good and complex aroma. Medium body, elegant and very balanced. Long finishing. A very classic and enjoyable Bordeaux right as its peak. (4306 views)

Tasted by gew71walsh on 9/26/2020 & rated 89 points: Only gave this a one hour decant in bottle, drank over next hour with beef tenderloin. Probably needed more time. Fruit was muted, a little bit of bitter aftertaste. I think this needs more time in bottle and/or a long decant before drinking. This seems borne out by other reviews indicating wine was better on second day. Two more bottles that will sit in cellar a while longer, (3816 views)
Tasted by bobadopolis on 6/6/2020 & rated 91 points: Decanted 2 hours. Good now with air, should improve with further maturity. Next bottle 2022+ (3620 views)
Tasted by tbuysse on 3/24/2020 & rated 94 points: Still quite young. But, what a great wine.. Is already so good now - and so well made! Full bodied, creamy texture, deep garnet colour, moccha, lots of clear fruit, intensity and soft tannins balanced with a refined vanilla flavour. Great ! (3845 views)
Tasted by vinhonotte on 3/20/2020 & rated 92 points: Fine Wines SG - Bordeaux 2010 vs 2011 BYO (Fine Wines SG): Deep ruby, thick and highly extracted. Pronounced nose, with savoury earthy leathery aromas. Tannic, savoury, meaty, with some red cherry. Quite persistent. Nice! (2721 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 2/3/2020 & rated 92 points: Very French, very beautifully crafted by the team for a 2011. It has perfect oak management for the vintage (considering we are drinking an oak clement) and it has good freshness. Lacks back end depth and length and gets more disbalanced with time in the glass. Will shine in a California wine lineup. DRINK (3317 views)
Tasted by ChristoBretts on 9/5/2019 & rated 90 points: Decanted over three days. Medium body on this garnet wine. Big barnyard to the nose the first hour but that waned. Palate dominated by fruit with acidity that continued through the three days. The nose evolved into a beautiful tarred soy sauce over purple fruit, the palate wanted to show this but was over-shadowed by the acidity. Perhaps my two bottles were mistreated, relative to other reviews of this vintage. (3151 views)
Tasted by ChristoBretts on 6/10/2019 & rated 91 points: Decanted two hour before trying and drank over a two day period. Nose of fruit, tar and some pencil shavings, palate with the same although more mild than the bouquet suggested, mild tannins, especially the second day. A rather shortish finish with a slight bitterness at the very end on the first day, no bitterness on day two. The nose and palate were very nice but the palate lacked intensity. Although very nice overall, was expecting a bit more for the price. (2936 views)
Tasted by PizziFamily on 5/28/2019 & rated 96 points: Really enjoyed this. We drank this alongside a couple other great California wines (2014 Dominus and 2012 Stags Leap Cask 23). While they were all fantastic, this one was my favorite. (2488 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
