Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 10 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ATBridge on 12/3/2014: Dark color. Initial very dark roasted fruit and meaty notes gave way to a more pure dark fruit. Good density in the mouth with a slightly diminished finish. Better with food. The chef's first impression was that this wine would be a great foil for oysters! (2091 views)
Tasted by jreis on 9/24/2012: Drank alongside an 85 Jaboulet La Chapelle. Very different than the Jaboulet and I liked the Delas more. Smooth red fruit, black pepper, juniper, dried flowers and dark earth on the nose. Sappy fruit with a meaty undercurrent on the palate and more black fruited. Again, tannins fully resolved and fully mature but plenty of time left. (3401 views)
Tasted by Oscar5 on 7/28/2012 & rated 94 points: Lovely elegant hermitage. Raspberries and cherries with smokey spicey undertones (3304 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 9/1/2011 & rated 93 points: 2011 Simple Series VII: Sean's Birthday (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): Elegant, complex and drinking wonderfully - this was a very nice wine. It had a beautiful nose. No one was in any doubt it was a Hermitage, with its scents of peppery spice, some cloves, black and blue fruit, winter melon and a toss of dried earth. With time, a dried flowery lilt started emerging. Lovely stuff. The palate had probably just started to thin out, but there was enough substance for it still to be a great a pairing with roast lamb with mint sauce. This had a lovely ring of deliciousness to it, with yummy, but every so elegant notes of black and blueberries, sweet spice, licorice root and a note of dried earth gliding into a long, lingering finish that licked the backpalate with little whiffs of smoke, leather and meat. Beautifully fresh, and cloaked in melting tannins, this may have been better three years back, but it was such a pleasure on the night. (2570 views)
Tasted by Dbrane on 9/1/2011 & rated 85 points: Sean Birthday (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck): Unfortunately I did not get much out of this wine from the barrage of wines that night. But this definitely score points in the distinctiveness factor as it could only be from the northern Rhône. I would certainly enjoy drinking this elegantly aged wine by itself slowly over a night though as the texture was smooth and secondary characters have emerged. (4207 views)
Tasted by Sleepy Dave on 9/1/2011 & rated 88 points: 2011 Simple Series 9: Sean BOD (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck @ Paragon): Alcohol : ??
Decanted for about 1.5-2hrs. Slightly cloudy garnet, still dark on the core. This is unmistakably a 80s Hermitage and in fact most of the ppl got this right. A little bit wild with underlying sweetness of dried fig, ripe plum, cherry intermixed beautifully with cedar, gaminess, roasted herbs and mushroom. The nose is so welcoming and fragrance. Fully matured but still possessed good level of sweet dark fruits along with good acid backbone, mineral and dry extract. Quite juicy and the medium length finish with good persistent. This is indeed quite delicious and complete though a bit one dimensional. (4192 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 10/8/2009 & rated 96 points: A perfectly delicious wine, a perfect expression of its grape, its terroir and its vintage. Intense, complex, fragrant, layered, crushed raspberries, nuts, custard, roast chestnuts, granite, spices, hint of soy, vestiges of pepper and purple fruit, calm and aristocratic; creamy, great finesse, not very big but very elegant, an almost feminine Hermitage, toute en finesse, velvety texture, ripe acidity and beautifully resolved tannins, minerality; excellent length. A real beauty, a perfect bottle. (1376 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 1/18/2008 & rated 92 points: Mature light brownish red; beautifully evolved bouquet, thyme, bay leaf and forest floor, hint of eucalyptus, granite, sweet red and black fruit, depth; is losing weight and the tannins are drying up a bit, but retains juiciness and vitality, good length, dried fruit and herbs, a veritable peacock's tail. (919 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 7/10/2004 & rated 92 points: Lovelr, ripe bricky red; the nose opens gradually, warm and fully mature, lovely nuances (spices and leather, crisp red and ripe black fruit, cedar and a hint of vanilla), good depth; powerful, mouthfilling, good structure, is losing a bit of weight with age, dried fruit, waxy bottle-age, lovely length. Drink now - 2010. (834 views)

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Since 1996, the firm of Delas Frères has fully retrieved the glory and spirit that made its fame. A highly motivated team is proud to help give a new lease of life to this great Rhône Valley wine merchant firm, founded in 1835. Under the guidance of its current management, numerous investments have been made at the winery at Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, near Tournon-sur-Rhône. A specially designed fermentation hall for the making of red wines, and a thorough rebuilding of the ageing cellar are amongst the key elements of the new quality charter from Delas Frères. This can be summed up in one sentence : place man and wine at the centre of the stage, together with terroir.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Hermitage

Guide to Hermitage wine Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
