Community Tasting Notes (average 91 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 13 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Lipsman on 2/14/2023 flawed bottle: Brown, unpleasant odor, gone. (243 views)
Tasted by vinojones on 1/8/2011 & rated 92 points: golden; nose of baked apples, warm bread;fruit has toned down, backbone and structure now more apparent, balanced, nice crisp acidic core, like a mature Meursault Premier Cru; full body, warm, sl yeasty finish, complex, long finish with good balance.
Not all Kistlers age this well but enough do to justify the investment (2949 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 1/21/2007 & rated 92 points: Reduction, sulfur nose; tasty, rich, ripe citrus and mineral palate; long tangy finish 92+ pts. (1098 views)
Tasted by KenK on 8/4/2005 & rated 89 points: Kistler Chards 1994-2002 TN (Long) (F. Patterson - Chicago): Deep almost golden in color. Delicate nose of nuts, butterscotch and honey.
Palate was oily with toned down fruit and carmel edge. subtle sherry-like element with fat soft mouthfeel. Lacking a little in flavor intensity and showing some age. To me this bottle was likely better a few years ago, but still a quality wine. (5027 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/4/2005 & rated 90 points: Kistler Chardonnay Blind Tasting (Chicago IL): Blind Kistler Chardonnay tasting. Clearly showing some age on nose and palate, probably a year or two past its prime, but this wine had more charm and balance than almost all the younger wines tonight. Caramelized fruit on nose with hints of butterscotch. then ripe and rich peach and apricot on palate. I liked this relatively much better than the group did, but the group generally liked these wines much better than I did. (3371 views)
Tasted by winefool on 8/1/2004 & rated 89 points: Kistler Chard Tasting - My #10, Group #6. Deep golden caramel. Lovely medium aroma of sweet caramel. Rich yellow fruit and quite oaky on the palate. Some oxidation notes. 8/04 (3236 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 5/14/2004 & rated 89 points: Wine tasting. Age appropriate maturity on nose. Soft, ripe buttery flavors to start, then shorter and simpler on finish. Good now, time to drink up. (2282 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 11/15/2002 & rated 91 points: Tasting. Lush start with butter and stome fruit that continue onto palate with also some nutty hints. Good length but short on acid and textures. At its peak, perhaps a year or two past. Drink up. (944 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 11/16/2001 & rated 88 points: Full of butterscotch, creme brulee, and spice. Not much minerals and fruit. Lots of heat and oak on the palate. Full of flavor, like a liquor... but not very wine-like. (1791 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 3/1/2001 & rated 91 points: Dark yellow in color. A bit closed at first. As it warmed, creamy flavors emerged. Spice, creme brulee, custard, apples, etc. But a bit of zip seemed to have been missing. Has the acidity gone? Did I wait too long? Anyway, quite enjoyable, and a great finish. (1738 views)
Tasted by danstrings on 12/15/1999 & rated 92 points: Bday @ Talamonti Munich--Char, Jacqueline, Anastasia--Awesome butterscotch, butter, cotton candy.. A ripe and flamboyant chard for sure (1414 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 10/1/1999 & rated 96 points: Dark yellow in color. Big, explosive nose of creme brulee, lees, lemons, and nutty spiciness. Explosive on the palate and a wonderful, mineral-like finish. Indeed, one of the top Kistler Chards I ever had! Awesome! (1945 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 1/3/1999 & rated 93 points: Initially closed due to the cold serving temperature, but as the wine warmed up, it opened up nicely. Dark yellow in color, slightly cloudy, obviously unfiltered. Nice nose of honey and butterscotch. Big and thick. Citrus, pineapples, butter, with a hint of nuts. Beautiful finish. Very well balanced. The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Sonoma Valley

Sonoma County, California, is one of the most important winegrowing regions in the whole of the United States. Vines have been planted here since the 1850s and, apart from the inevitable hiatus brought about by Prohibition, the county's relationship with wine has been prolific and unbroken.

Viticulturally speaking, Sonoma County is divided into three distinct sections: Sonoma Valley, Northern Sonoma and Sonoma Coast. Each of these has its own AVA title and encompasses several sub-AVAs within its boundaries.
