Tasted by bubucap on 2/29/2020 & rated 89 points: Fruit upfront; raspberry; cherry; some plums; black olive; short finish; overall easy drinking (2479 views)
Tasted by Magnolian on 1/15/2020 & rated 85 points: Significant decline from last bottle 17 months ago. From magnum. Still chewy with dense blueberry flavors, but has taken on an acidic, bitter, vinegar-y edge. Past its prime. (2407 views)
Tasted by Alaskawino on 12/20/2019 & rated 84 points: Much better than last bottle with a peppery fruit balanced with spice. (2442 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 10/13/2019 & rated 89 points: WIML89

Tasted from magnum. Tasted non blind as part of a vertical tasting.

Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of dried herbs, black pepper and cassis. Flavors of boysenberry, raspberry and cassis. Tart acidity, medium tannin, medium body. Drink now. (2611 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 10/22/2018: From magnum. Was afraid that it might have been over its particular hill, but instead, it was gratifyingly rich, fruity, and plush, without jamminess For me, the texture stood out the most. Only started to decline on the third day open. A winner & super value. (3187 views)
Tasted by Magnolian on 8/16/2018 & rated 89 points: From magnum. A bit rustic and chewy, classic CdR syrah, drinking well now but unlikely to improve. Much enjoyed by a big group with steak sandwiches. (1847 views)
Tasted by ccrida on 5/20/2018 & rated 87 points: Mostly earthy tertiary flavors with some dark purple fruit left as well, good bbq glugger, drink now. (2272 views)
Tasted by Alaskawino on 3/1/2018 & rated 69 points: A little left but could not finish the bottle. One left for cooking. (2302 views)
Tasted by Alaskawino on 11/7/2017 flawed bottle: Corked (2671 views)
Tasted by vatausae on 3/11/2017 & rated 82 points: Past it's prime. (3449 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 2/10/2017: Just as it was a month ago when I wrote, “Sometimes something familar and comforting is the most satisfying. Bright with black cherry and blackberry, tobo, eucalyptus and black pepper and black olives. This QPR never fails to deliver far more than its price point would suggest in the hands of any other producer.” Loads of sediment. 14% alc. With assorted cheeses (Bleu de Basque and cambazola) crusty bread, and country ham. Recommended. (695 views)
Tasted by Mike V on 2/2/2017 & rated 84 points: Effervescence really off putting. ?secondary fermentation. From mag Garagiste (3489 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 1/13/2017: Sometimes something familar and comforting is the most satisfying. Bright with black cherry and blackberry, tobo, eucalyptus and black pepper and black olives.  Tasted by jonahfactor on 1/4/2017: Old Reliable. Our last bottle. While most vintages of this CdR have been good weeknight values, the '11 was particularly enjoyable. Still fresh, with black and blue fruits and spicy elements. Throwing off some grit, and offering a shortened finish compared to when it was younger. Might last another year. But I'd drink 'em if you've got 'em. (= Worth Seeking Out) (3196 views)
Tasted by Ideasthatstick on 9/9/2016 flawed bottle: This is my third try on a third of fourth. And the there is an off "effervescence". A fizziness that conflicts with the wine. Could three out of four be bad? Or does the effervescent fizziness affect the bottles here. Any observations are appreciated. Oh these are 1.5 liter bottles from Garagiste. (4384 views)
Tasted by madvitale on 7/16/2016 & rated 90 points: Mmmmmmm......Still good, even tho the community seems to think this is past its prime. Still good fruit on the palate and a nice finish. Smooth as silk. Easy drinking and versatile. (3865 views)
Tasted by jes0811 on 7/4/2016 & rated 88 points: Late curve. Surprisingly still fruit forward and drinking quite well. Brick. Good density. Overall well balanced if not just slightly tart. (3027 views)
Tasted by danibus on 12/14/2015 & rated 90 points: In a great place right now. Integrated red/purple fruits, a little spice and garrigue. Tasty and balanced. Perfect with grilled new yorks. Crowd pleaser but not in the modern/fruity overdone way. This is why good CDRs are the best red QPRs. (4292 views)
Tasted by Doc90 on 9/26/2015 & rated 88 points: A lower bottling from a historically great winery. Fragrant berry fruits and Rhone garrigue harmonize on the nose. Med-light body typical of a Cotes-du-Rhone. Some sharp oak is noticed up front but ripe berry fruit coats your mouth and lingers. Solid tannins on the finish. For $14, this is a great wine, and it worked well as a starter. I'd recommend. (2800 views)
Tasted by jkwatson on 9/7/2015 & rated 89 points: Really nice and funky on the first day for the BBQ. Not great on day 2. (4098 views)
Tasted by jonahfactor on 8/30/2015: Some unwelcome spritz upon opening that settled down within 20 minutes in the glass. Almost ink black with a fine necklace and a woodsy, floral bouquet once the funk blew off. Buckets of blackberries, black raspberries, dark currants and black plums on the palate that spill over into the finish, where it's joined by some tar and black licorice notes. For a humble CdR, this punches way above its class. I'd put this up against Syrah-based offerings that retail for three times the price. Splash decant. (3705 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 6/11/2015: Just pulled, popped and poured as a quick relief hitter for a dinninr of sausages over polenta. This is just as it always is - satisfying. Showing well just now with pretty black fruits, good acidity and mellowing tannins. (689 views)
Tasted by bartgerrits on 2/8/2015 & rated 90 points: K dieprood paars
G zoetig intens
S in balans mooie vanille tonen.
C mooie eetwijn. Een van de betere shiraz wijnen (4936 views)
Tasted by travelin.mikeyt on 1/4/2015 & rated 87 points: Not a lot of depth but a drinkable wine that is simple. Others seem upset by it's lack of pretension but I found it enjoyable if not complex. Considering how inexpensive it is it met my expectations. (4857 views)
Tasted by Sennma on 1/1/2015: NYE - from magnum, a touch simple but a crowd pleaser. (3806 views)

2011 Saint Cosme Côtes du Rhône

Winemaker Notes

Jon Rimmerman hyperbole:
Dear Friends,
As an annual right of passage, it wouldn’t be spring without Louis Baroul's special bottling of
Cotes du Rhone magnums. We’ve offered this large-scaled party favorite for a number of
years and it becomes more popular with each passing campaign.
If you are searching for a big bottle of impact to open and set free at a family gathering or
office party, I can’t think of a better choice – not only will this bottle dominate the room but
you won’t have to micro-manage or worry about its productivity – it will do all the work for
you.
How good is the 2011 version?
Very.
Not only is Louis politely “freaking out” about the quality level but he has to go back a
number of years to find something that is this large-scaled but also balanced and harmonic
(2005 comes to mind). A much broader wine than the 2010 and not as overtly ripe as the
2009, the 2011 has a lot of the little things that make St. Cosme so popular – black/purple
color and tone, a heady/floral aromatic (from the 100% Syrah) and a palate-staining reminder
of what you’ve just experienced. Not necessarily for the Bonneau crowd, this wine is
unapologetic in its Jeff Spicoli party mood – always ready, willing and able to create a good
time no matter the day, place or audience. Think of this as an adult-level secret potion or
“wake and bake” for grown ups which (despite our most educated and poised intent) is
required at one occasion or another throughout the year.
Come to think of it, this is for the Bonneau crowd as we all find ourselves in the position of
cellar stare-down when we’re running late or just can’t make a decision: you’re staring into
your cellar wondering if the event or evening merits a certain special wine and you keep
going back and forth regarding whether to horde or to give? If this sounds like you, let this
large format come to the rescue - no matter your palate preference or predilection, you don’t
need to think about this – if you stash a few of these within arms reach, you’ll never be
tempted to open something you wish you hadn’t.
ONE BOTTLING AND SHIPMENT ONLY (this is always very popular so I'm letting you know in
advance...this is it) - directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance.
FIRST COME FIRST SERVED up to 48 x 1.5lt until we run out:
2011 St. Cosme Cotes du Rhone 1.5lt (Garagiste bottling) - $26.80
(this is not the “little James” or Cotes du Rhone Blanc, both are less $/750ml)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.
