Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.8 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 28 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/20/2022 & rated 93 points: Great Wine Dinner, No Wine Theme (Tzuco - Chicago IL): Red and black cherry throughout with very savory spice. Good depth and balance, this is consistently a very elegant 1996. (2140 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 9/3/2022 & rated 93 points: Haunting mature Burg nose - really spectacular. Lovely balance still but with time getting a little less intense. Overall superb performance for a 1996 PC. (1160 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 7/9/2020 & rated 93 points: Nose is both black and red cherry, great purity and freshness to the red and density and power in the black. Smells elegant and beautiful but also bold in a Meo sort of way. The spice takes a few minutes to really develop but shows up just beautifully, not oaky baking spices, but black pepper, tea, bay leaf, cola, in a very Vosne - Richebourg - Beaumonts direction. The palate has loads of red and black cherry too, soft silky texturally, pure, clean, and powerful. Not particularly rustic, more fresh and pure. ‘96 acid is a touch high but there is another beauty and detail that it’s no problem. Showing really nicely, imagine this is about peak and don’t see much more upside as the fruit is technically matching the acid right now. Very proper. 92 - 93. (2160 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/9/2019 & rated 95 points: La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. Age appropriate maturity with dense red fruit, earth hints and so much spice, all providing layers of glorious complexity. (2940 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 5/4/2018 & rated 92 points: Epure blind. Sweet, rubbery aromatics. Very fruit forward. Not behaving particularly sophisticated, but very decadent and fun. (2395 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 4/20/2017 flawed bottle: Corked. (2362 views)
Tasted by salil on 6/30/2016 & rated 90 points: Dry Riesling and Burgundy night (Olea, New Haven): Fits a lot of the stereotypes of '96 - a touch lean and austere with plenty of acidity, and while it's very impressive, it's not especially charming. There's lots of ripe dark berried fruit on the nose accented by high toned spiciness, savoury earthy notes, and some maturing leatheriness, but the tannin and acid structure does dominate on the palate. It does soften a bit and open out aromatically with more air, but always feels a touch severe and austere. (3690 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/24/2016 & rated 95 points: Magnums of Meo (Vosne-Romanee - Burgundy): From magnum at the domaine. Bright red cherry and berry aromas and flavors. Amazing freshness and perfectly integrated, elegant tannins and acid. Silky soft. Great tonight. (3415 views)
Tasted by Biglama on 12/8/2015 & rated 94 points: heerlijk, nog zo mooi op dronk, echt groots (2481 views)
 Tasted by fatfishzsy on 5/16/2015 & rated 92 points: 酸度活泼,但是和其他几个大年比起来,有些弱了,在3小时时涌现出典型紫罗兰,4h后衰败。 (2872 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 7/1/2014 & rated 93 points: Dense nose of dark fruit, meat notes, Cedar and red fruit and spice. Great concentration and balance. Muscular. A cedar note on the long finish. (2691 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/8/2013 & rated 94 points: Second La Paulee Warmup Dinner (Corton - New York NY): Black cherry aromas with great baking spice. Similar on palate with great density and concentration start-to-finish. Very elegant. I've enjoyed this wine quite a few times the past 5 years, this was back on track after a corked bottle last summer. (3621 views)
Tasted by Pacalet on 11/23/2012 & rated 93 points: Medium red in color, popped and poured and the nose is already very alluring, with lots of ripe red fruit, spices and quite floral. Medium palate with quite a good bit of depth, very rounded and supple. Quite long finish. Drinking very now but still can keep for the medium term, lovely. (2943 views)
Tasted by BradE on 10/21/2012: The operative word at the table was "yummy". Enough said. (2913 views)
Tasted by ben2e on 10/20/2012 & rated 95 points: Terrific. No funky earthy musty flavor. Structured and a little tight but delicious fruit. (2582 views)
Tasted by KenK on 7/12/2012 & rated 90 points: Charlie Trotter's Goodbye with Jayer, Meo, and Rouget: Dark sweet stewy red fruit driven nose. More leaming toward black cherry then red.
A big wine, dense with solid initial fruit, structure and good lift, but a bit disjointed tonight. Long rich wine. Less nuance and more brawny. Nice flavors, but a bit hard needing lots more time. Overall, somewhat disappointing. Fruit seems to be stripped down with time. Some wondered if this was not a perfect bottle, but I saw no obvious flaws. (2979 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 7/12/2012 flawed bottle: Another Final Dinner at Charlie Trotter's with "Guests" Henri Jayer, Meo-Camuzet and Rouget (Charlie Trotter's - Chicago IL): Moderately corked. Open 30 minutes before serving, started off nicely, was uninteresting after 15 minutes, undrinkable after 45 minutes. Thankfully not decanted, which would have taken away those few minutes of pleasure this wine provided. (3028 views)
Tasted by MatthewF on 7/12/2012 flawed bottle: Charlie Trotter's Farewell Dinner with Montrachet, Brulees and Cros Parantoux (Charlie Trotter's, Chicago IL): Opened 30 minutes before serving. Started off nice with red cherry and berry aromas and flavors with pretty brown spice notes and some earthy qualities. As time passed however the nose became slightly stewy and less interesting. There were some very nice elements underneath, but unfortunately it was an off bottle. (3019 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/18/2012 & rated 94 points: Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): I brought this to our double blind tasting to follow up on the 6 vintages of Meo-Camuzet V-R Brulees at dinner the night before. Decanted just over an hour before serving. Fresh black fruit aromas with background Asian spice to start. A bit more lean fruit to start on the palate, but this picked up power toward the middle and finish. Spice also intensified toward the end and picked up complexity with more air and time in glass. Great acids and fine tannins that are nicely harmonious. Still a baby, perhaps just entering its peak drinking window. (2526 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/19/2011 & rated 93 points: Acker Merrall 1996 Burgundy Dinner (L2O - Chicago IL): Floral nose with really good Vosne spice, with aromas of ripe black fruit. Slightly lean at the start, but great black cherry and red cherry flavors then emerge on the palate, very lush and ripe but still completely in harmony with the wine's structure. Powerful on the finish. (2919 views)
Tasted by Rani on 8/24/2011 & rated 90 points: Blind. Spicy, with cloves and pepper. Slight barnyard funk. Round and long on the palate, with a harsh drying finish. Not sure this will age gracefully any further. (2001 views)
Tasted by BradE on 3/19/2011: Excellent shape, and a very decent wine. Not a rock star, but will have a long life. (2142 views)
Tasted by Lord Rayas on 11/11/2010 & rated 90 points: Birthday dinner in Paris with MNSC (Il Vino d'Enrico Bernardo): black fruits, herbs and spices, sweet prunes. acidity becoming more apparent towards the end leading to an overly tannic finish. (2375 views)
Tasted by psmith on 3/6/2010: Dark fruits. Earth notes, but fruit-forward and full for a '96. Well balanced and structured. Clean. Will certainly last/improve. Showcases the best qualities of the vintage. (2287 views)

Domaine Méo-Camuzet

Producer website

Meo Camuzet is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious producers in Burgundy and
revered by the cognoscenti of Red Burgundy collectors. The esteemed Henri Jayer
(who's wines go for upwards of 4k+) has been integral in the estate's prowess since
1959. No serious Burgundy drinker should be without Meo Camuzet in their cellar.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Vosne Romanée is one of the smallest wine villages in Burgundy The wines possess diverse characteristics, but they can generally considered to have complexity and longevity beyond nearly all other wines in the world. The village has six grand crus: Romanée-Conti, La Romanée, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and La Grande Rue. While there is monopoly control of four of the six grand crus, the village has at least forty growers sharing its vineyards. The top premier cru includes Les Malconsorts, Cros Parantoux, Les Chaumes, and Clos des Réas.
