Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 84 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by PIntag on 1/19/2024 & rated 74 points: This is dark, port-like, and oaky. Eleveated VA, too. I guess a lot of folks like this style, but this is nearly undrinkable to me. I've had some other Turleys with some age that were Ok, but this wasn't one of them. Felt the same about a 2003 Dusi that I had a few years back. (148 views)
Tasted by pyrat40 on 8/15/2020 & rated 91 points: Had a mini-vertical with a 2007 Dusi. The 2008 showed more fruit, surprisingly more for only being one year younger. Dark, full flavored, mellowed tannins and no heat despite alcohol level. I'd give a slight edge to the 2007 but maybe it's because I tasted that one first. Both were delicious and nicely complemented grilled rack of pork. (1094 views)
Tasted by jonahfactor on 11/17/2019: (Vertical Dusi tasting at Turley.) Less mature than the ‘09 Dusi with some still-to-be-resolved tannins at the back end. Full bodied. Black and dark blue fruits with a substantial finish. Shows significant promise. Drink 2021-2026. Worth Seeking Out. (1555 views)
Tasted by SMagowan on 10/13/2018 & rated 92 points: Had this bottle for 8 years, sometimes stored in good cool and dark conditions, but sometimes not. It was still great. Deep purple in color, heady full mouth flavor of dried cherry. Great winemaking wins out as always. (1685 views)
Tasted by Senso-beak on 4/20/2018 & rated 88 points: Opened for SC strategy session. Wow, deep, dark, massive cave of dark jam and fruit. Blacks of immense depth and brooding lagoon of thick unctuous fruit. (2064 views)
Tasted by Minnesota on 4/18/2017 & rated 88 points: One note based on first sip - think peppermint candy cane. Over the years, my spouse has shared her thoughts on 2005 - 2008 Turley wines on this (shared) login (I deleted them out of respect to an old friend). I did just notice she gave this one an 80 a few months back. We've long loved Turley but are celebrating this as the last of our 2008 Zins.

Only 68 more bottles from 2009 to 2012 then our cellar will be bare of Turley. Naturally, halfway through the 2010 bottles I guess I'll realize it was just a long string of rough vintages (which naturally makes it less likely you'll grab one and compound the issue with excess age).

In defense of Turley, we once loved high alcohol zinfandel and our tastes have changed. (2865 views)
Tasted by tcosgriff on 3/6/2017 & rated 93 points: Deep purple color with a bouquet and flavor suggesting plum jam without the sweetness and with brambly notes in the finish. Very good balance and definition with a smooth feel on the palate. Surprised that it did not show signs of decline, given its age. Turley wines are reliably good, if not likely to be awesome. (2173 views)
Tasted by levinml on 12/23/2016 & rated 92 points: Turley is my anywhere, anytime bottle, and at $30-50/btl., why not? This is on the outside of the community drinking window, but was doing just fine. Great flavor profile, and not flabby at all. Just everything we expect from Turley. (2152 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 11/10/2016 & rated 92 points: Violet in color and packing a punch at 16.1% ABV. Fantastic nose of sweet red fruits, brown sugar and framboise. Incredibly rich and plush. Remarkably well balanced all things considered. Raspberry liqueur, cherry and kirsch on the palate. Delicious wine but not for the faint of heart. Drink over the next two years or so. (2166 views)
Tasted by jonahfactor on 2/19/2016: Packs a bit of heat, as AAJR noted. That said, this is still a luscious glass of wine when you're in the mood for brash and fruit packed. Dark purple with loads of kirsch, blackberry jam, spice and apricot at the front that transitions to spicy cedar and smokey notes in the finish. Remarkably fresh with a whiff of pine needle that peeks out. This could easily cellar for a few more years. (=Worth seeking out) (2541 views)
Tasted by AAJR on 1/3/2016 & rated 91 points: Consumed over three days. 89-91 points over the three day period, day 3 being the best showing for this wine. Quite a bit of heat in this wine given the 16% alcohol. By day 3 the heat did subside. Jammy with flavors of dark cherries & berries. (2131 views)
Tasted by tcosgriff on 11/10/2015 & rated 89 points: Purple color with a jammy bouquet and flavor, with typical brambly finish. Quite a bit of alcohol that isn't entirely masked. No use holding on this vintage. Best to drink it. (2056 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 6/7/2015 & rated 93 points: Really drinking well last night! Everything you want from a good Zin... veggies, fruit, minerals... all in a great package (2197 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 4/4/2014 & rated 90 points: Big but zesty berry notes along with cracked pepper. A little heat on the finish but otherwise smooth and lively for the alcohol content. (3357 views)
Tasted by djpo on 3/21/2014 & rated 89 points: Jammy to start then began revealing cherry, plum and some spice, pepper. Good finish. Great alone and with food. (2449 views)
Tasted by squiddo on 3/10/2014 & rated 88 points: Veeeery jammy. Way more than I recall from other sampling. Not sure l love this but it's a "like". (2468 views)
Tasted by silbakor on 12/16/2013 & rated 89 points: Less richness of fruit than usual for Dusi, and perhaps a bit more obvious alcoholic heat. Still not bad though. (2623 views)
Tasted by Rktekt3 on 9/5/2013 & rated 92 points: This is just so yummy right now. And for the $37 the qpr is out of this world. Right time for opening this. (2978 views)
Tasted by diananm on 8/25/2013 & rated 93 points: Big and delicious. Save some for day 2 if you can, it gets even better. (1794 views)
Tasted by handymom on 8/13/2013 & rated 93 points: Drinking beautifully right now! (1796 views)
Tasted by handymom on 8/9/2013 & rated 93 points: Drinking beautifully right now! (1708 views)
Tasted by cstir on 3/2/2013 & rated 90 points: Smooth on opening; spice and jam have lessened; more earthy flavor; good depth and complexity; nice finish. (2028 views)
Tasted by pgb67 on 3/1/2013 & rated 94 points: Winter 2013 Wine Parties: Sleek and elegant, yet muscular with a palate of big berry fruit and a long oaky finish, all of which is introduced by a complex aromatic profile of cherry, cracked black pepper and smoky sage. WOTN, perhaps due in part to its ability to stand out in a crowd. (1986 views)
Tasted by larrybbaldwin on 2/12/2013 & rated 91 points: intense, dark fruit bouyed by balanced acidity. The fruit flavors shine in the mouth-only negative is noticeable alcohol on the nose. (1950 views)
Tasted by jwalker1140 on 2/11/2013 & rated 91 points: Very intense dark red fruit. Somewhat tart and walks the line of being pruny. These days I prefer some of the other Turley bottlings that are a little dialed down and more complex by comparison. (1833 views)

Dusi Vineyard

The head-pruned old vines of the Dusi Vineyard have come to define the intense bramble-berry flavors of Paso Zin. Planted in the calcareous soils of the West Side, these dry-farmed vines produce small quantities of fruit with dense concentration and wild spice. [Four Vines Wine Club, 1/2010]

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
