Tasted by dsimmons on 4/23/2022 & rated 95 points: Beautiful aged syrah. Concentrated, complex, delicious. A step up from the bottle I drank a few years ago. Drink or hold. (1188 views)
Tasted by GrapeScott on 3/4/2021 & rated 92 points: I dropped Carlisle a number of years ago because I was on too many lists, and my tastes were moving away from Mike Officer's fruit-forward style. But I still enjoy pulling a bottle every now and then when the mood strikes, and I thought this could stand up to the Tikka Masala we were having for dinner (which it did). Very rich nose of blueberry/blackberry fruit overlaid with anise notes and floral perfume. Just gorgeous and so easy to drink, caressing the palate with its luxurious fruit and smooth tannins. Whether your style or not, damn, Mike crafts some tasty juice. (1598 views)
Tasted by Bronvino on 12/12/2020 & rated 92 points: Plenty of fruit left, primarily blackberry notes. Spices & earth follow with everything in balance. Tannin present but soft and pleasant. Appears to have life ahead but drinking wonderfully now. (1466 views)
Tasted by jfkwines on 9/13/2020 & rated 92 points: Exposed to air for two hours. Seemed like an appropriate amount of time.. Great biig fruit well integrated. No smoky or white pepper flavors of some Syrahs but had a nice 'chew' to hold up to burgers. Enjoy over the next 6-12 months. (1702 views)
Tasted by rldixon on 7/7/2020 & rated 93 points: This was an amazing wine for me. Decanted for an hour, still too tight, so let sit for another 90 minutes. Once it opened up, it was an array of modest dark fruit and leather. Silky tannins, perfect body, long finish. This was my last bottle and I think I caught a peak, but this will continue to be good for at least a year or two... (1685 views)
Tasted by Ed B on 5/19/2020 & rated 91 points: PnP and drank over two days. Opaque, nearly black. Mixture of red fruit — cranberry, strawberry, cherry and raspberry — taking turns in the lead. Some spices, but mostly an earthy finish. Still has years to go. (1196 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 7/13/2019 & rated 93 points: Pretty amazing, particularly for a $30 wine. Very dark. Very assertive nose - black and blue fruits, licorice, smoke, minerals, grilled meats, pepper, underbrush, the kitchen sink. Same on the palate (except no kitchen sink). Plenty of backbone and a solid finish. This just screams "syrah!", and I'm definitely listening. (1357 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 6/21/2019 & rated 92 points: Still very deep in color with concentrated black fruits in the nose and flavor. Blackberries, plums, blueberries, floral, licorice, earthiness and hints of spice. Nice complexity, well balanced, and a long finish. (1273 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 4/14/2019 & rated 92 points: Our first bottle of this last night with pork roast. Delicious dark fruit, sweet tannin, spice. Drink or hold. (1452 views)
Tasted by jaumealaska on 8/12/2018 & rated 92 points: Still dark in color with dark fruit and some spice to the nose. The body is highly extracted with dark fruits, licorice, and spice to the body. The tannins are soft and the acid balances the alcohol. The finish is medium to long. Will it be better once more secondary flavors emerge? I will never know as it was last of my bottles. But I enjoyed them all. (1610 views)
Tasted by ChrisWagner on 6/21/2018 & rated 92 points: This was super.

At a great place now. (1701 views)
Tasted by EhrlichDY on 4/12/2018: Similar impression to my last bottle. New oak is detectable without being obtrusive. The wine is dense and tarry with savory flavors. This is quite different as most Carlisle wines also have sweet ripe fruit as part of their character as well. Still, it worked for me. I To me the wine will integrate further but I'm not sure it will improve or any fruit will emerge. My recommendation is to drink now or over the next five years. (1747 views)
Tasted by EhrlichDY on 9/20/2017: Popped and consumed over a few hours. Perhaps this one was closed? Noticeable new oak and dark fruit on the nose. Some fruit follows through on the palate but not a lot going on. Mid weight and smooth mouth feel. (1882 views)
Tasted by ephorn on 9/15/2017 & rated 91 points: Nearly opaque color, plenty ripe nose. Good balance, acidity is higher than alcohol which is higher than tannin. This didn't hold too well even after two days coravined (coravin needle left in cork). Nice wine but not exceptional. (1719 views)
Tasted by snarfglk on 1/30/2017 & rated 91 points: Similar to last bottle, this is a great syrah which is tight and closed day 1. Day 2 is what is advertised. (1873 views)
Tasted by snarfglk on 12/25/2016 & rated 90 points: A little tight at first but opened up. (1712 views)
Tasted by Geoff on 12/21/2016 & rated 94 points: Beautiful fruit, sweet tannins, smooth mouthfeel, long finish. Very nice wine! (1761 views)
Tasted by silton on 11/21/2016 & rated 89 points: A deep purple wine with a thick affect and a little heat. A blue fruit base was flattened with charcoal, with notes of olive and meat in the shadows. Didn't really budge with air. A barrel sample without the sweetness? Not the best Carlisle, maybe it will rebalance itself in a few more years. (1884 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 3/26/2016 & rated 90 points: Thought I would like more than I did. Big Carlisle fan, but this had some glycerine and menthol even on day two. The fruit was there but not as integrated and pleasant as other wines by Mike. (2228 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 1/12/2016 & rated 91 points: Like many 2010's, this is brooding and took a long time to open. The last glass was the best, so I would hold these. Purple/maroon in color. The nose has lots of grilled meats, some earthiness and some black raspberries. On the palate, this is stern and narrow. With air it opens to show more fruit. Not a lot of fruit, but purple/black fruits. Nice texture. I don't think it needs food, just time at this point. (2424 views)
Tasted by Mootsie on 11/27/2015 & rated 93 points: Deep maroon color. Smokehouse and blackberry nose. Very smooth and balanced. Blue and black fruits, anise, pepper, tar, olive brine and medium tannins. Drinks well served cool and with a 2 hour decant. Could cellar for several years yet. Well made and a very enjoyable Syrah. 93+ Drink or hold. (2052 views)
Tasted by rxfudd on 10/13/2015 & rated 89 points: Above average but not mind-blowing. Admittedly, this was a non-decanted bottle, which may have made a difference. Paired with BBQ ribs and pulled pork, which it actually excelled with. My complaint is that it was a bit bitter on the back end, and -- I do not know how else to describe it -- musty and/or funky. On the plus side, this wine was still quite bold and satisying. Would buy again at this price, but I'd decant for a couple hours first. (2254 views)
Tasted by csimm on 8/9/2015 & rated 87 points: Notes of tart blackberry, red fruits, olive, and rocks and minerals. Some saline notes with an odd tart (almost grapefruit) tinge on the back end. Not sure where this wine is going, with complicated earth and fertilizer notes framing the astringent fruit profile. I have another that I'll let lie for another year (fingers crossed but not too hopeful). Totally different persona than the Papa's Block. (3170 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 7/29/2015 & rated 92 points: Nose of Dark Fruits, cooking spices, steak juices and flowers. Palate is medium bodied, nice silky texture and medium acidity with loads of dark fruits, tar, beef blood and maybe a bit of orange fruit at the tail end (not unusual for some Carlisle Syrah). This was very good, needs some freshness at the end but I very much enjoyed this over the course of 5 hours. I wouldn't hurry, it has 3-5 years of cellar life ahead easy. (1773 views)
Tasted by GoBlue2002 on 1/23/2015: This wine was just odd.
I alternated between deciding it was corked (a rarity for Carlisle) and it was just one weird syrah. This was my first Sierra Mar, and was nothing like the Sonoma County I've had in the past.
Our group decided that this was dominated by a green olive note, and a few people picked up a briney note (prior to reading the CT notes). These aromas seem in line with most of the recent CT notes, so maybe this is just how this wine tastes. If so, this is unlike any Cali syrah I've ever had. Also interesting that the first 12 CT notes have no mention of olive and then 6 of the last 11 do.
One of the group loved this bottle and will be buying my Sierra Mar allocation I just purchased, so maybe it's a style thing.
In summary, this syrah was either not my style or flawed. (2038 views)

2010 Carlisle Syrah Sierra Mar Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands

From the winery:
2010 Santa Lucia Highlands “Sierra Mar Vineyard” Syrah
Yahoo!!! Ever since grower extraordinaire Gary Franscioni showed us this property and laid out his vision for planting it, we’ve barely been able to contain our excitement. It was obvious that this was going to be a special vineyard and based on our first result, indeed it is! While most of the 38 acres is Pinot noir and Chardonnay, Gary planted a two-acre block of Syrah using budwood from Alban Vineyards for us to share with Novy Family Wines. Picked October 25th, the wine spent 21 days on the skins. Thirty-three percent whole cluster. Only 30% new French oak. Unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note: Very dark ruby-garnet. Aromas of blackberry and creosote with a floral lift. Medium-full to full bodied, the wine has terrific cut and precision thanks to refreshing acidity and tannin. Although a mere eight miles south of Rosella’s, not a bit of grapefruit in this wine, only pure blackberry yumminess! While enjoyable now, this Syrah should be at its best from 2013 through 2020.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
